Paynes is such an amazing establishment to have in the area. The staff are so kind and eager to talk with their clientele. The food is great, traditionally prepared, and comforting. The interior is uniquely decorated, but still lends itself to a pub feel.An awesome place to visit during the fall to sit back and have a pint and a warm bowl of soup. The recent addition of Paynes traveling food truck to Yorktown events (farmers market, downtown commons during concerts) makes our lil' town that much cooler.Make the trek if you haven't. Everything is worth trying. Nothing disappoints.

Wow! We stopped here on our way up to Angola and we were pleasantly surprised at how good this spot was. The fish and chips are the best I've had in the US. They also had Irn-Bru which was exciting. My husband had a Guinness, while out of a can was still very good. The burger was the only item that wasn't 5 stars, but why would you order a burger at a place that has fish n chips, bangers & mash, and beef stew & Yorkshire pudding. The interior was comfy and cozy and service was great. Highly recommend the drive to this spot or making sure to stop by on your way up or down I-69.

We got the potato and onion soup, tomato soup, grilled cheese and the bacon and brie melt. All were very tasty. We also got a plate of fries... best fries I've ever eaten. But... there was spinach under the pile of fries... I was concerned they were trying to get me to eat veggies... Our waitress, Tiff, was also very nice and took care of us well. 5 stars.

When we walked in the music playing was a song by the Smiths, so I was already in love with the place! The restaurant was medium-busy but the service was good nevertheless - our waitress was attentive without being intrusive. We were given complimentary bean dip and some taco chips as soon as we were seated. I ate a little of it - it was excellent but I didn't eat much of it because I wanted to save room for my meal. I ordered the celebrated fish and chips, with the puréed cauliflower/cheddar soup as an appetizer. It was a blistering hot day but I was glad I ordered the soup, as it was delicious, served with a chunk of toasted bread on the side. As I ate it I was trying to figure out the recipe, ha. Then came the main course - the fish and chips. Okay, I have been searching for decent, genuinely English-style fish and chips in this state. Many have claimed to have them but NONE has delivered - until I ate at Payne's. Whatever the secret is to authentic English fish, this place has got it! I haven't tasted fish like this since eating at the Earl's Court Pub in London back in 2019. The French fries on the side were not proper English chips, but no matter - they were FABULOUS. This place is an hour and a half drive from where I live, but it was worth it. My (English) husband had a Newcastle Brown Ale in a bottle, the fattoush as an appetizer and the British chicken curry. He didn't like the fattoush (he said it was too vinegary for his liking, but he ate it anyway) and he wasn't a fan of the curry because it wasn't hot enough for him. I didn't try any of his food so I can't speak to that, but I did have a sip of the beer and it was great (I was driving so I only tasted it, although I would've liked to have had an entire bottle to myself). After the meal we were full but we wanted to try the desserts so we ordered the sticky toffee, the bread pudding and an Oreo milkshake (for my son) to go. The toffee and the bread pudding each came with a container of premium vanilla ice cream on the side. When we got home we had the desserts (they did travel well, even though it took us over an hour to get home). The ice cream was delicious, the sticky toffee was too sweet for my taste (it tasted like molasses to me - my husband said it tasted like treacle to him). I tried the bread pudding and it was AWESOME (wish I'd ordered that instead of the sticky toffee!). I didn't try the Oreo milkshake, but my son said it was excellent. The only thing I really didn't like about the meal was the bill - with tip it came to around $100. However, I believe you get what you pay for, so I didn't mind it all that much. I really wish this place was located closer to central Indiana, where I live. Even though it's somewhat of a drive, I would go back here for special occasions.

It's been a bit since I've been here, but I was driving by again, and soup and grilled cheese sounded so good. It was crowded inside and took a while to get seated, but the staff was nice and very attentive after. This time, I decided to sit out on the patio, as they were dog friendly and said I could bring my boy in (otherwise, I planned to get takeout out). They brought chips and a dip to the table. It was kind of like a cold bean dip, I didn't catch the name. For my meal, I did the bowl of puree of cauliflower soup and the bacon brie grilled cheese, which came in three spears. It was all filling, and I boxed up the third spear to go. #yum #ReviewsByRL

yes, I'm a regular customer there and I think I might've offended some people by my sense of humor in my comments and for that I am sorry but believe me I won't still quit coming there. I'll just learn to keep my mouth shut.

The food here was average at best, and the waitress was extremely rude and unprofessional to our table. I will not be back.

Service and food are almost always good. The visit on Valentines Day did leave us alittle disappointed in the cauliflower soup. It was not as thick as in previous visits. The large fish dinner was great. This visit was earlier than their 5-7pm Valentines special dinner. Don't let this deter you from visiting if you like a British flair dinner experience.
