Food was traditional breakfast fair, but made fast and very tasty. Talked with the owner's daughter for a bit and got some of the history and background. It's always nice finding small out of the way places that don't have that chain restaurant feel. This was a nice and cozy atmosphere with great prices and great staff.

The entire place smelled of dead chicken and manure. We left town immediately. We drove an extra 30 minutes to eat some where else. No bueno.

We just stopped for breakfast. Yum! Service was great and friendly. Omelette was perfect, biscuits and gravy were delicious, sausage was fresh and seasoned perfectly and the pancake was the fluffiest I'd had ever. We will be back!

By far the best biscuit and gravy chicken fried steak breakfast bowl we've ever had! Service is super friendly and owners are fun to talk with. In fact Norm wants us to share with you that the highest point in Indiana isn't Hoosier Hill (where we were visiting) but rather his loaded fresh cut fries! And they certainly were a high point for us! Worth the trip!

Portland, IN is not known for its culinary prowess. It's a small town with a few fast food joints and that's about it. Nothing even resembles home-cooking, organic, or locally-sourced food. About the closest thing to good food would be Norm's Place II at the south end of Portland.Apparently, Norm's Place was located down the street but moved to this new location. One thing that's nice is that it's fresh and clean, and isn't permeated with stale cigarette smoke like some of the other restaurants in Portland. It's open for breakfast and lunch, seven days a week. Four of us stopped in on our way to Loblolly Marsh for a walk, and were about the only ones in the place. It was a Monday at an off time, so that's not surprising. The waitress greeted us and seated us along one wall. She was very friendly and personable. We ordered omelets and burgers. The salads that came out with the burgers were the typical iceberg lettuce variety. Nothing special, but fresh. The burgers came with the requisite slice of American cheese on them. The omelets were fresh and pretty good actually. For Portland, it's probably about the best place in town for breakfast and lunch, serving up basic midwestern diner food. The place was clean. The food was good and the price was right. The service was very nice and friendly in that midwestern way. We would definitely eat there again and can recommend it.

Norms's has a true family atmosphere. Norm's isn't just a name, he's actually the cook. The food is very good and the portion sizes are good for the price!

Our last visit, the owner's daughter surprised us and said we needed to pay for our last time In because SHE added our bill up wrong. They actually had our ticket (bill) hanging up in the restaurant. She said her dad made her pay for our meal she didn't charge us for. She tried to make us feel bad about her mistake because her dad, the owner yelled at her. It was her mistake. She scolded us for not noticing her mistake. If she would have been kind enough about the situation it wouldn't have been a problem for us. But the problem is, we had been weekly customers every Thursday for 3 years, even when my parents were in town. But the fact she treated us badly, we never went back to Norms restaurant. We apologized for not noticing her mistake and not paying for the food she didn't charge for us 2 months prior. We had not been in because of Covid. We paid our bill plus that amount. She made us feel like we purposely didn't pay and stole it.
