Mecates Mexican Restaurant

I was pleasantly surprised by Mecates. We were traveling from Ft. Wayne to Indianapolis, and stopped in.Food: The quality, portion size and price of their menu items were all very good. There are a ton of Mexican restaurants in the market these days, and finding differences between them is getting harder to do, but I thought Mecates did a very nice job of overall meal presentation. Their chips & salsa were decent - not spectacular, but satisfying. The carne asada for my fajitas was a tad overcooked, but still tender.Service: Our server was very prompt and attentive. As I'm mentioned frequently on Yelp, my pet peeve with restaurants is when they force you to beg for drink refills (which is usually a sign of understaffing), but at Mecates, this wasn't a problem.Ambiance: The restaurant was clean, nicely decorated, and had all the elements we've come to expect with Mexican restaurants in the US. Noise levels were normal.

I come Here every time I come to Indiana. When you walk In someone always greets you with friendly service and a smile. They're very Attentive to their customers and they make you a priority as soon as you walk through the door.I ordered my Taco Salad, and of course they listened to every request I had. They were very generous with the sour cream. (8 months pregnant and I asked specifically for that.) They Listen very well and ALWAYS make my order DIRECTLY TO MY LIKING. When placing my order, the people have always asked me questions, Where I'm From? How the drive was. What New York is Like. Etc. The Social Skills these people have are always so refreshing and Thoughtful. Great Conversations!! They DON'T OVERCHARGE either!! I paid $10 for a Taco Salad... PHENOMENAL! I tipped them $7.00. I have had nothing but good experiences the couple of times that I HAVE been... This time, I Went to Kroger to Pick up A Few Smoothies and Some dessert for the Hotel room. (Literally RIGHT behind Mecates Restaurant.) I spent MAYBE 10 minutes in the store. I came out, drover around back to The Restaurant. It honestly Takes forever to make order in New York. (Read about me waiting for Sushi for More than 30+ minutes in Previous Yelp reviews.) So I honestly didn't expect the food to be ready but sure enough... I walked in and it was beautifully Packaged sitting there all ready for me and yet again, someone greeted me at the door with a smile across their face to hand me my Order. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I KEEP COMING BACK! The Food was Cooked so well. It was Hot and Flavorful! The chips were packaged tightly with the salsa so it didn't leak or a make a mess with the bag. Decided to grab lunch here while in town for high school basketball. Local reviews were good and we love a good Mexican restaurant! Not very busy for a Saturday afternoon, and we were seated right away. Our server let us know that the house margaritas are $1.99 on Saturdays, and who am I to turn down a $2 margarita?! It was actually a decent one and we each ended up with a second one, because why not? Lol. We started with guacamole, glad that they make their fresh and you can tell. I added a little salt but it was otherwise really good. The salsa was pretty good, I normally like it a little spicier, but it was mild enough to be crowd pleasing and still had good flavor. He enjoyed his taco salad, and I had steak tacos with cilantro and onion. Overall a good choice for Mexican and I'd go again if I were ever in this area!

Meat in my wife's combination was dry. The salsa was soapy tasting. My Chiles Rellenos was tasteless. Nuff said.

For the money you're better off going across the street to Jabez. But it does have a great atmosphere service is slow,or total forget you and the food is mediocre.

Forget what you know about Mecates, my experience today after the renovations was refreshing. Between management, our waitress, the expo, and the new open environment, it felt like a genuine restaurant. Our drinks were always filled, food was hot and fresh, and overall just a great experience. Thank you, Mecates for bringing back that heartbeat!

Best Mexican in town, servings are absolutely massive. The queso and chips are great as well as the arroz con pollo. Service is just average. Place is newly renovated so the atmosphere is pretty nice.

Chips were greasy, food took a while to come out, the food was bland but was an over all OK experience

Would not go again! I swear we saw bugs crawling along the wall dying, my wife said it was cockroach, it might have been cricket... but still. The food was NOTHING special.The staff are nice and friendly and doing a good job, but there was just nothing I liked about the experience. I'll go to TacoBell.
