I've been trying to embrace the limitations that the pandemic has placed upon me. Part of this has included trying virtual classes, and that's how I happened upon the virtual cooking classes that Indy Urban Foodies offers. Each week, they offer a different virtual class where they teach you how to cook a different type of meal, all from the comfort of your own home. There are themes like Super Bowl Snacks and Galentine's Day, but then there are classes that focus on one type of food or region of the world, like the class where they teach you how to make a dessert trifle, or sushi night. I signed up for pizza night, and we made a pizza from scratch, including the crust and pizza sauce. Let me tell you: The class was worth it just to find out that I now know how to make the best-tasting pizza sauce ever. We also made a caprese salad and fig and goat cheese flatbread. How it works is that they send you a grocery list a few days before the class. They also recommend a local beverage pairing with the meal, which for my class was an IPA from Black Circle Brewery. So, then you go out and buy all the ingredients and the beverage. For the pizza class, we had to prepare the dough the night before, and they sent an email with the recipe. They also sent the other recipes the night before, so you know what to expect for the class the following night. I love learning new kitchen skills, trying new food combinations and discovering new local bev, so this type of class was right up my alley. I got to try making flatbread (which somehow I had never thought to make before!), as well as discover a great local Indy beer. I had made pizza from scratch many times, but I discovered a new technique for stretching the dough. I feel like my homemade pizza game has been elevated because of this class.Indy Urban Foodies is a woman-owned business, and the women who run it are super kind and talented. They post a lot of cooking tips and recipes to their Instagram account, so you should definitely follow it if you're looking to learn something new.
