Feels like walking into friends and family's home. Everyone is so welcoming and kind. food is omg so juicy and delish! You have to try the mushroom Swiss burger(my fav) also Thursday is 59¢ wing night, and on Fridays special is a heaping massive amount of chicken Alfredo and garlic bread. (Which is an addiction of mine on Friday nights) they definitely do no skimp on any of the servings everything ordered is worth every penntry it if you don't believe me! But I'm just going to say you're welcome before hand.

The Checkerboard Tavern is the epitome of a true neighborhood bar. It is located in a neighborhood and there are lots of locals there. This never deters me because it really is a neat place that has been around for a long time.We decided to stop in on a Sunday afternoon. I have to be in the mood to stop in here though, because the bar does allow smoking. I certainly know that there is an audience for this and the audience has no problem finding this place. The cigarette smoke was not too bad. The cigars being lit up one table over made parts of our experience slightly unbearable. If you do not like a smoking-allowed bar, do not visit here.On a side note- I believe that part of the ordinance that allows/disallows smoking indoors in Lafayette should have included placing a decal with a Green Cigarette (smoking allowed) or a Red Cigarette (smoking prohibited) on the door. Would make it easier for people to navigate the world of smoking bars. The crowd was a lively, regular-type Sunday afternoon crowd. We sat on the bar side and were promptly greeted and served. The draft beer options are limited, but manageable.It had been a few years since I had eaten here and I remember the food always being good. This visit did not disappoint. I do not recall if I had ever had the breaded tenderloin here so I ordered one. I was NOT disappointed. It was not overly large, but it was thick and the breaded was just right. It is in the Top 3 tenderloins in town for me. Our basket of fries came in a cute fryer fry basket. It was a nice touch. There were alot of fries though so be prepared to take some home with you.Overall, it was a good experience. Again, I understand and appreciate the need for bars that allow smoking; I just wish this bar didn't allow it because I would be able to visit more and not have to leave all of my clothes in my garage when I got home.

I once got a Ruben from the Checkerboard per a friend's recommendation; it was the worst I've ever had.The sandwich tasted like an ash tray, which I imagine is because the place had indoor smoking at the time. I haven't been back since and I wouldn't recommend it.

Man, I really go out to give a dive bar review out here ob Yelp. Another bar that looks great and is cool as it is I side as it is on the outside but again it's filled with trash and the people I saw sucked. The old dude singing eighties rock tunes out loud to far drunk ladies to young rowdies. I feel for the people who work here and ewww. llll yuk..they still smoke in here

Always a great time! Good food, great service, the bartenders and wait staff are funny and kind, even better prices, older crowd mostly, laid back vibe...I definitely recommend this bar to everyone!

Giselle is the best bar tender, she can't drive for shit, but she chill. The food here is really good. This is where all the workers from Dancers go after their shift, so it's pretty cool. I'd say go here if you want some good drink and a chill time.

Great food, great atmosphere. The servers are the best. My favorite bar in Lafayette.
