What a charming cute place off the beaten path from Indiana to Illinois.Ordered a burger (it was perfect)! Spicy cheese curds were intriguing so why not.Completely reasonable. Not super fast but this is the type of place you want to cherish and not rush.

During my travels today I stumbled across a small town restaurant called the "Chatterbox Cafe". While I'm out and about in all the small little sleepy towns of Indiana I love to come across a diamond in the rough. I can honestly say I found a good one here in Hillsdale Indiana, the "home of 600 happy people and a few ole soreheads" as their sign reads as you enter town. I didn't even glance at the menu until I sat down because I saw the special was hand breaded cod fillets with sides. I didn't ask if there was a choice I just asked for the special and it came with a generous portion of steak fries and baked beans. I did glance at the menu and noticed they serve Prime Rib on Fridays, and they have quite a nice selection of choices. Please understand this is a no stop light one flasher town. Everyone knows just about everyone and this place is a blessing to this quaint little town. I forgot to mention the seating is first come first serve and seat yourself. The place was so full many people were sharing tables. My fish special was delicious and the tartar sauce was homemade. The batter on the fish was delightful and cooked to golden perfection. The beans were more flavorful than I expected and the steak fries were pretty normal but filling. There were only a couple of servers but they handled the crowd like champs and everyone was very friendly. This part of Indiana always seems comfy for some reason. The interior is comfortable and you can tell they put some work in to make it nicer. The prices are spot on and the portions favorable. Hope you get to enjoy it. Make sure to check the store hours before you go and know they serve breakfast as well!

First visit last evening (Friday) and they were busy. Friday night specials: prime rib, rib-eye, catfish fillet, and two others I can't remember Servers were busy but experienced and attentive. Our group of seven received our food order hot, prompt and all together. Portions were plentiful, more than needed. Tenderloin sandwiches big, lots of curly fries, steak fries and regular fries. Fried chicken dinners (just $8.50) include 4 pieces, potatoe AND salad bar. Worth a trip to this small town friendly restaurant.

This was our first time to give this place a try. We have driven by but never got an opportunity to stop. Tonight, after a funeral, we decided to stop in. This is how I remember small town restaurants being. Lots of local people laughing and enjoying themselves, friendly service, great food and lots of it. Now, It's probably not the place for "hipsters" or "foodies" but if you like really good food and a friendly people, this is your place.
