There is even a set of seats behind the stage -- I've never seen that before. The plays are generally well done, fun and entertaining. The small venue guarantees a good view and accustic from any seat in the house. I suggest getting season tickets, they are such a bargain and give you entertainment year round. Snacks and drinks are also available here. Street parking may seem limited, however, there is a large private parking lot behind the building."

Every time I walk in the front doors, the smell popcorn and the building in general hits me in the face and I am immediately super happy! I started going to plays and musicals with my grandfather here when I was in first grade and even now, about 18 years later, I still get super excited about going to the theatre! Just last night I saw Beauty and the Beast and I have no doubt in my mind that I was just as excited, if not more excited, than all of the little kids in the audience! I was definitely more hype about taking pictures with the characters than the kids were! Haha! Civic can always be counted on to put on a good production. The 2016-2017 season will be magnificent! They will be performing the following:Beauty and the BeastMemphisJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat To Kill a MockingbirdGreaseSuessical the Musical I plan to attend ALL of the plays this season! Susan F. "Church Street Commons, aka "The Commons" is a former church made into a community theatre. I am actually very impressed with how they used the space; where the altar was is the stage, and obviously the place for congregation seating is now the audience (folding chairs, not the pews). The overall structure of the sanctuary is perfect for this-the ceiling is vaulted, and the floors are hard wood. I've been a few times for my nieces' youth theatre/ summer theatre camp productions. Students from Ball State direct, and local kids are the cast.they have a small snack bar area where they sell popcorn and candy, water and soda. I am not sure if they use the space for other things, but it would be a great party venue or for a wedding reception. My only wish is that they served beer/wine/liquor. No, I am not kidding. It could be a little more high brow that way."

A bit sweet, but delish. All the staff very quite friendly and we got lovely seats front and center. I'd say when you get a chance, upgrade to VIP. It's not much more and the seats as well as the welcome, the lounge & drink are well worth it. The show itself was absolutely fabulous and I would go see it again in a heart beat. I love the hometown events that the student dancers have the opportunity to perform at. En Pointe is making a point of not only showcasing the talented students in the community, but they have also started traditions such as An En Pointe Christmas, that is pure holiday entertainment for the whole family. Irvington Lodge

Irvington Lodge

★★★★★ 5 (4) • $

Richard P. "For a wheelchair user, I seem to have a weird fascination with everything in the world that's not particularly accessible. Case in point? The Irvington Lodge. I love this building. I would never really recommend the building for wheelchair users, though I've managed to get around it fairly well. The building began development in 1921 and was completed in 1922. Like many Masonic Lodges, the ground floor was intentionally designed to allow for retail spaces as this would help support the Lodge. If you're familiar with the Irvington Lodge, then you know that it bears on it the rather ominous "Lodge #666" marking. It seems fitting to have this be in a neighborhood recognized for its many haunted locations, but there's no denying it even creeps me out a bit. The building was rumored to be the host of Ku Klux Klan meetings in the 1920s - KKK Grand Dragon D.C. Stephenson lived only a few blocks away in a mansion on University Avenue. Until 1950, the Lodge also hosted the Irvington Post Office. The Irvington Lodge continues to be an actively utilized building. Retail spaces are taken by Irvington Vinyl & Books, Hampton Designs Studio & Shop, and LVLUP Gaming Lounge. Additionally, Mosaic Church uses the Lodge's entire 3rd floor. Accessibility is most challenging in the 1st floor retail spots, though I noticed during my recent visit that Irvington Vinyl & Books had installed a bit of a ramp trying to help the situation. It's certainly not ADA, though it is an improvement. You can get into the first floor of the lodge. There is an elevator to the 2nd and 3rd floors. The 2nd floor includes a theatre room, reception room, a fully functioning kitchen, and a buffet area. You can rent these facilities and the rates are pretty market friendly. The Theatre Room has over 2300 square feet and many period touches still in place. It's rather stunning. The Reception Room is right about 1400 square feet. The 3rd floor has a couple of large main rooms. Hardwood floors are in place throughout and there's a stunning balcony that would be great for a wedding (unless you're in a wheelchair - then it would suck). This is one of those buildings I can't help but love. I'd give almost anything to have an office here, though it would inherently be a not particularly wheelchair friendly one. You also have close proximity to the Irving and nearby Irvington area businesses. Renting the facilities requires the usual liability insurance in place and a deposit, though rates are pretty friendly. They don't have preferred vendors - so, it offers flexibility that some venues don't. The Irvington Lodge was acquired, I believe, around late 2017-2018 by longtime Eastside resident Yasha Persson and a team. Given the pandemic was right around the corner, it was a challenging time to acquire such a beautiful building. However, here's hoping it continues to be such a beautiful, vibrant part of Irvington."

The show lasts about 20 minutes and it is well worth the cost. The woman who put it on exhibits a sense of love of her work. The show was very entertaining. Since we were there in October, the theme was a haunted puppet show (slightly haunted - not scary at all). Additionally, there is free popcorn for everyone!Loved the show, the art and the enthusiasm of the owners."

However, if you are intrigued by the Great American Songbook and classic cinema, this place is worth a visit. Try to contact them in advance and ask for a tour. Be sure to let them know your interests. Chris is incredibly knowledgeable about the collection and does a great job pointing out the most moving highlights in the collection. Check out the ground floor of the building, too, because there is typically a small exhibition of items from this collection, as well. My favorite piece in this collection is the cocktail napkin on which the lyrics to "I'll See You in My Dreams" were first penned. Among other things, you'll find holiday cards from Irving Berlin, Bob Hope's golf clubs, the Meredith Willson papers, and so much more."

Paramount Theatre Centre & Ballroom

Paramount Theatre Centre & Ballroom

★★★★★ 4.7 (16)

Richard P. "The Paramount Theatre Centre & Ballroom is one of Anderson, Indiana's pride and joys, a true classic theatre that has somewhat miraculously been maintained despite being quite literally days away from being torn down in the mid-90s. The Paramount opened in 1929, a John Eberson creation that had the initial misfortune of opening up just as the Great Depression was getting started. It was opened with a plan for vaudeville and movies and at opening had 1,700 seats. The Paramount is an atmospheric theatre and it maintains much of that atmosphere to this day. It was designed by resemble a Spanish Casa with wrought-iron gates, statues, and a ceiling painted with stars that really did twinkle. Clouds were projected onto the ceiling and they would move across the "sky." Because of the timing of building, plans went from a seven-story structure design to three stories with the ballroom on the top floor. There were originally 155 theatres nationwide constructed by Eberson - 12 remain and Indiana has two (the Embassy in Fort Wayne being the other). In 1985, the Paramount closed for 4 years and by 1989 had experienced eight different owners. It was facing the wrecking ball with plans for a parking lot. It was only 3 weeks before the final ordinance would approve tearing down the Paramount that a local lawyer who worked across the street was watching a television show about restoration and came up with and quickly put into action a plan to save the Paramount. It was no small task to attempt restoration - the Paramount had gone four years without heat and cooling and had significant water leaks and other major damage. In January 1995, the restoration began and while it continues to this day by June the first concert took place in the restored Paramount - Sammy Kaye and the McGuire Sisters. The theatre now has wider seating and has been reduced to 1,458 seats - having attended multiple events here including music and film festivals, it looks and feels enormous. All the statues along the wall are original. There's a catwalk along the ceiling to access lights (all 221 of them). The theatre screen is 40' x 20' and is the second largest in Indiana. The Grande Page Organ is still in place and is one of only three such pipe organs remaining in their original theatres. In 1997, it was restored and even enlarged. The Paramount even hosts the annual American Theatre Organ Society convention. In 2015, a new sound reinforcement system was donated along with new aisle lights. You can rent the theatre - in addition to the 1,458 seats it has 10 dressing rooms and on-stage seating for up to 60 guests. You can also rent the Hardacre Ballroom and Marquee Room - the ballroom has 6,000 square feet with an original hardwood floor and the Spanish Villa-themed terrace room with a kitchenette. The Marquee Room is a smaller room appropriate for 70 guests. It does have an accented fireplace. Being that this is largely a vintage theatre, accessibility is certainly hit-and-miss, though they've done very well in most public areas. The theatre does have an elevator, though it does not allow access to all spaces. They offer public tours and specifically note that to do the complete tour some stairs are involved. As a theatre on the National Register of Historic Places, it is exempt but I've been able to enjoy every event I've attended here and the staff members are always exceptionally helpful as needed. If you've never experienced the Paramount, it's worth a trip - they host many special events throughout the year (the 80's band Night Ranger is playing there tomorrow night!). Anderson is actually a rather cool city with lots of sights worth seeing and a chance to check out the Paramount and that amazing organ is definitely worth it."

They have a small concession stand just off to the left side when you walk in. Very nostalgic place to go for some low cost live on a stage entertainment. They kept all the glitz and glamour of years past when they carefully redid this place. For something different than a new release movie at a normal theater, catch a show here sometime. But wait, there's more, if you do want to see a special Christmas, Halloween, or seasonal classic type movie, they also play these too during certain seasons. Some comments I heard was that it was boring, but not having seen any previous performance of Cabaret (not even the movie with Liza Minnelli!), I really didn't know the story line. The Emcee (played by Jeremy Allen Brimm) was amazing and the actress who played Sally Bowles (Betsy A. Norton) had an amazing voice. Her day job is a surgical nurse at IU Health North Hospital...such talent! The theatre was a little hard to find since the address couldn't be found on my TomTom, but I eventually got there before the performance began. Not being overly familiar with the Indianapolis area didn't help...and didn't help me avoid all the construction issues at Lafayette Road/Highway 65.The theatre didn't serve alcohol before the show or during intermission, but they had me at the chocolate chip cookies! The teachers we've had so far for ballet and hip hop have been really friendly and fun--they seem to enjoy being around children and teaching dance, and it shows. I was a little afraid about what our experience would be like since they hadn't danced before, but it's been great--so if you share a similar concern, rest assured that you don't have to be like those dance families you see in reality shows! We did a birthday party here about 5 years ago and had a "real" ballerina come in and lead the kids in a dance...everyone in our group loved it! They even helped us set up our party favors, etc. and took notes when the gifts were being opened so I didn't have to."

★★★★★ 4.5 (11) • $

Richard P. "I've got a couple friends who regularly have exhibits in shows at The Garfield Park Arts Center, however, since I live in Lawrence I simply don't get down this way as often. I really should. The Garfield Park Arts Center, like the park itself, falls under Indy Parks. Originally built in 1922 as the "Community House," it was designed to look like a picnic shelter with enclosed walls, high ceilings, and fireplaces at each end. In 1930, a large swimming pool was located in the area that is now the parking lot. At that time, it was primarily used as a locker room and rec center area. In 1990, the pool was removed and replaced by the Aquatic Center that is now located at the Burrello Family Center. In 2006, the "Community House" was remodeled with a $2.7 million grant. It became the Garfield Park Arts Center. The 8,000 square foot facility now houses a multi-use performing arts space, exhibition hall, visual and production arts classrooms, a recording studio, a literary arts library, and a rehearsal room. The GPAC is big enough that it typically has multiple exhibits going. For example, right now there's a modern quilting show, a solo show by Jay Hamm, and a show by Christy Harp. GPAC hosts a variety of workshops and classes including current activities like voice and piano lessons, ceramics, and quite a few visual arts options including those specifically for children. The classes are way affordable - for example, there's a $10 rock painting class for kids. As someone who has a pet rock, I'm all for rock painting. GPAC also hosts summer camps and special events. The calendar is on their website. I'm particularly enchanted by a classic movie night. They've also assisted with some of the public art in Garfield Park. The art center tends to be open limited hours - for example, 1-5pm during the week. It does participate in First Fridays. I'm a big fan of Garfield Park and I'm a big fan of having access to the arts. I find this facility to be quite accessible and even more after their 2006 renovation. It's not perfect (no building of this age is), however, it's quite good. Prices are affordable and the center itself has a nice combination of nostalgia with contemporary comforts. Especially for those with kids who may enjoy the classes, GPAC is a definite winner."

Just recently, though, I got to go inside for a concert. I've officially lived in Indiana for 10 years as of 2025, and I finally visited this iconic Indianapolis theatre. I guess this makes me somewhat more of a Hoosier?Hilbert Circle Theatre was built in 1916, and it really feels like a relic of its time. This is the home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and I was here for one of the ISO's Uncharted concerts: Bartok x Bjork. My seats were great -- several rows from the stage. I walked around the theatre a bit, and discovered that really, there wasn't a bad seat in the house. There is plenty of seating, but it feels intimate. Before the performance, there was a DJ in the auditorium spinning all of the late-Gen X and early-Millennial faves (Portishead and Oasis on the 1s and 2s, of course). There were also little beverage booths to grab a drink. The drinks were a little pricey ($12 for maybe-a-6-ounce plastic cup of cheap red wine!), but that's par for the course with these kinds of places. I was a little concerned about where to park, because there is zero chance I would find parking on Monument Circle. But my worrying was for naught. Just go to the Express Park Garage (20 N. Pennsylvania St.), which is attached to the Hilbert Circle Theatre. Once you park in this garage, you can walk to the theatre without leaving the parking garage -- it has its own entrance. Parking was $10; just make sure to keep your ticket with you."

Keep in mind to not have high expectations of the condition or decor of this theatre - it's bare bones basically. I recently came during the winter months and it was freezing inside this theatre. Like, very, very cold as if no heat was turned on. The hot water in the bathroom didn't work either, lol. I know that this theatre is filled with a variety of shows: Rocky Horror Picture Show, live music, and more. The only reason I'm giving them 4 instead of 2/3 stars is because every month they feature 3-4 musicians in their singer/songwriter showcase for FREE, which you can't beat. Niki B. "My favorite places to see them are at the Hilbert Theatre on the Circle and at the Conner Prairie symphonies on the prairie. They're always fun, talented and warrant big crowds. I love how modern and creative they always are. For example, they currently have a movie series where they show movies like Harry Potter and Star Wars and they play the classical music live during it. Seriously, how cool?! They also have mini lunch time concerts, happy hour concerts after work with local food samples, kid events and sooo much more."

Tivoli Theatre

Ronee B. "Love the Tivoli! It's a small, old-school cinema. Tickets are cheap and concessions are beyond reasonable, plus they offer really cheap refills. Tivoli is great for families. They often host free kid movies. Staff is friendly. If you buy one of the Tivoli T-shirts you get free refills, how fun is that?"
