Katherine A. "My daughter loves Silver in the City, so this is where I go when I want to pick her up a special gift. I usually shop at the store on Mass Ave, but I was in Carmel, so decided to check it out. The clerks were busy stocking shelves for Christmas when we entered, but welcomed us with big smiles. The shop seems a bit smaller that their other location, but still carries most of the same merchandise. They are known for their silver jewelry by various artists. Currently, they are featuring charm necklaces. An Indiana theme runs throughout the store with everything from Indiana necklaces to Indiana kitchen towels. It's a great place to pick up a gift with candles, art and even some local foods. I even saw a few toys and puzzles today for the kids.I was looking for a funny card and they have a small selection of cards but they were somewhat inappropriate to give a daughter. But they do have lots of crazy socks. There is street parking or parking behind the building."

I was greeted by the staff and a friendly pup that welcomed me. The shop, though somewhat small, had a nice selection of clothing, both serious and whimsical (think fancy socks!), mugs, books, and home decor items. I didn't really think of this as a furniture place that you might guess by the image of the polka dotted mural on the east side of the building. But it was a cool gift shop sort of place that I could see finding something unique, often humorous, for someone.Definitely worth checking out the next time you are near the canal!Review #2104"

The shop is located in The Garage Food Hall, part of the Bottleworks complex off Mass Ave. They carry a wide range of merchandise including dog related mugs, local popcorn and chocolate, fudge, cards, jewelry, home accessories and more. I found some of the Indianapolis-themed items most interesting. Some of the merchandise is a bit risqué (adult oriented) making ideal gifts for a bachelor/bachelorette party. They even carry an interesting assortment of gift cards. The clerk was super friendly and welcoming during my visit. Prices range from reasonable to high for quirky stuff you just can't find anywhere else. There is a parking lot behind the complex or metered street parking along Mass Ave."

I took it to Frameworks to have a wire attached by which I could hang it. The staff member (not sure which of the brothers it was) looked it over and recommended some protective glass to cover my "investment," as he put it. He also placed some backing on it, as well as the wiring for hanging. Total cost was under $50. The work was professionally done in a very reasonable amount of time with no upselling. I recommend them highly."

Some stunning jewelry items that evokes an art museum store, except more individual even than that (since you find many similar brands represented in art museum stores). I love how owner, Jennifer knows the story of each vendor and maker who outfitted the shop- many local. The shop isn't over-stuffed, so you can actually see everything in the space. There are some stunning Italian leather bags, jewelry and many gift items. Cute zen puzzles, scarves, and some lovely home items/ hostess gifts. Really enjoyed it, I drank the whole pot. We had reservations and they accommodated 10 of us. I had ordered the high tea when the reservation was made, they need to know this in advance. The high tea was $45 on this day. Our waitress did an excellent job of taking care of us. On this day the two cakes they had were a raspberry coconut and a chocolate bourbon. They both looked delicious. I did bring a slice of the raspberry coconut ($10) home for the hubby and he loved it. My high tea had 8 finger sandwiches on the first tier, a scone and clotted cream on the second tier, and 2 macarons, white petit cake, and raspberry shortcake on the third tier. Also while we waited for them to prep our table we shopped in the gift shop at the entrance. They also had a nice sale going on where the clothes on the porch were 50% off and some others inside as well. Nice spot, the only thing is construction going on near it and parking is a bit of bear. Although I did find a spot right out front."

Kara M. "One of my friends mentioned going here awhile ago. Well, all three of us went. I knew it was a tea room going into it. When you walk inside it's nice but overwhelming. You walk in and it's a gift shop and then tea rooms spread throughout. It doesn't have a good flow to it. We were seated and right off the bat I'm not going to lie the menu is confusing. So many options. The waitress we had seemed put off that two of us that had never been there seemed confused at the menu. So, starting out I don't appreciate that. So, once we FINALLY decided what to order it came out and they brought the wrong sandwiches. You could choose from egg, chicken or tuna salad. We ordered the chicken salad which came on croissants. The chicken salad was just chicken salad. I mean nothing special about it. Well, we ended up with egg salad. I'm not a fan of that neither are the rest of us. So, we're like hey we got the wrong sandwich so she comes out with tuna salad sandwiches not even cut like all the other sandwiches. So, we ended up cutting them in little triangles and added them to the tea tray. Ok, well I mean it wouldn't have hurt them to cut them like all the other sandwiches. So, we tried the tuna salad they weren't good. Now, I will say the presentation of the sandwiches and desserts is very pretty! I will give them that. But, the service and the salads were not great. The coffee cake I thought was very good! The other desserts were ok. So, we're sitting there and the waitress comes in and brings a dessert tray filled with cakes. So, we're thinking oh we get a slice of cake with the meal. NOPE!!! You don't!! lol She just came in to tell us the flavors. For the price you pay for that tea it should be included!!!!As far as the tea goes it's tea. We had I think four pots of tea between two people one doesn't drink tea. It was too much tea. The table needed plates and things taken off to make room. We had to keep shuffling things. But, our waitress didn't clear things as often as she should. All in all I don't think I would go back here. I don't say that often to a place. I just didn't care for the service, the interior, and the food. My other friend who hadn't been there before thought the same. She wouldn't go back either."

It is difficult to get into if you are westbound on 82nd, it looked a bit picked over, and even though my wife and I were the only ones in the shop, the two clerks were busy eating (3 in the afternoon) and didn't speak to us or even acknowledge us as we browsed through the store. There were some witty little pieces, some animal slippers, and most items seemed reasonably priced. But they have arrows that encourage you to look in the restroom for savings and they have a large display of candles that aren't for sale. What??? After having dealt with businesses earlier in the day that made sure to offer help and thanked us for coming in, we both agreed that this place won't be a place we will return. Abbott's Also Candy Store

★★★★☆ 4.2 (24) • $$

Richard P. "Abbott's Also Candy Store is an offshoot of the original Hagerstown, Indiana-based Abbott's Candy Store started by W.C. Abbott around the turn of the 20th century. For years, Abbott's factory actually existed in Abbott's own backyard - actually until 1985! In 1993, Jay & Lynn Noel opened this location in a strip center on the Northeast side of Indianapolis that almost appears to be an afterthought when you look at it. They would eventually open two other Central Indiana locations and, in fact, they purchased all of Abbott's in 2012 with hopes that they can turn Abbott's into a nationally recognized brand. This particular location looks practically the same it did in the mid-90's. It's a modestly sized location in a strip center that has appropriate curb cuts and accessible parking for those of us with a disability. The entryway offers one glass door that is relatively easy to open/close. I'm actually rather surprised I've never reviewed this Abbott's, which used to be a regular stomping ground for me when Barnes & Noble was in this strip and for the few months I worked there. The staff is always friendly and helpful without ever being pushy. The prices range from incredibly affordable to higher-end. Their caramels are epic, definitely one of the candies for which they are most known, and they also offer sugar free products. They also offer chocolates, fudge, truffles, and brittle. Abbott's has always been Indiana owned and it continues to be. I love that even when it was sold it continued to be a Hoosier business. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd likely go for the fudge. However, the sea salt caramels are also pretty awesome. You really can't go wrong here. Abbott's Candies can also be obtained at multiple locations throughout Indiana and is, of course, still also located in the delightful town of Hagerstown. I served as interim pastor of a church in Hagerstown for 18 months and fell in love with the community. The Hagerstown spot is a little less wheelchair friendly. Fresh Thyme also carries the products and Abbott's has expanded into some retail spots in Ohio. While the pandemic has certainly slowed down business in a retail strip that already tends to be a bit slow, this would be a great place to stop if you're at the nearby Chick-fil-A or The District Tap. They are not a dine-in type of place, so it's relatively easy to avoid a crowd, support an Indiana business, and get your candy carry-out!"

It was like Betty White knew, somehow.Silver in the City has a lot of jewelry, which is not on their website. I know this because I checked. You have to visit in person to see their collection. They have jewelry in all price points, too -- from around $15 all the way up to $100+. My little ring, which I love, was less than $20. I also looked at some lovely necklaces, bracelets and earrings. This is a great place to get inexpensive but fun jewelry. This is a great place to find Indiana-related gifts, too. You'll find local chocolates and food, wine glasses etched with Indianapolis streets, state park t-shirts, Monon Trail posters, Mass Ave stickers and lots more. There are kitchen goods, wacky socks, toys and gifts for kids, plant-specific things, pottery, handbags, and hundreds and hundreds of other fun things that I didn't know existed but suddenly had the urge to purchase right that minute. There are so many tchotchkes and trinkets, at a variety of price points. The people who work at the store are exceedingly helpful. I browsed the gifts, but found the inventory to be limited and a bit overpriced. So what ended up as a shopping stop, turned into a sweet tooth treat. We shared a double scoop of strawberry and chocolate ice cream. My favorite was the strawberry. I loved how you could taste the texture of the strawberries in the ice cream! If it wasn't homemade, it was darn near close to it. There was a play area for the kids and I even noticed some photo props... both are nice touches to any ice cream parlor. Speaking of which, I read that they used to only be a gift shop, but later opened the parlor part of the business. All of these mentions indicates smart management/ownership. Kudos to them for thriving in a world with far too few ice cream parlors."

Ken N. "If you are a fan of taking tours that teach you something, then take this tour. If you are a fan of seeing artists creating something right in front of you, spend the $6 and take this tour.Known primarily for preparing sheets of glass in over 20,000 varieties of color and texture combinations, this working factory features a gift shop where you can buy the artisan crafted pieces. It also has a daily tour at 10 a.m. during the week. (Note that if you want a private tour, you can call and make special arrangements as a group of teenagers from Germany were doing while in town.) It is rare to have the opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at the common items we see everyday be created. Too often, some of the talent required in making the art pieces are left to individual artists. But here, nearly every employee is involved in the making of either the sheet glass (used for stained glass, or cut and sold to artists as a base material to work with) or the custom glass that make dishes, glasses, paper weights, and now, even counter tops. The tour lasts a bit over an hour depending upon the number of questions the group asks. It could probably go a bit faster if everyone wasn't so busy filming the different processing with the phones. So, just be patient and take some yourself. It really is amazing to see something that started out at least 70% sand (along with recycled glass and other chemicals for color) turn into beautiful pieces of art or service material. I was most surprised at how quickly the molten glass changes in color once removed from the furnace. Be aware that the buildings that you walk through are over 100 years old and the surfaces are both dusty, somewhat uneven, and in some areas, covered with broken glass chips. So be careful. On my visit in the spring, there was plenty of fresh air blowing through and the temperatures inside were pleasant. But you can feel the heat off the furnace (I believe it's 2400 F) even from a distance.Even the sheet making portion of the tour which relies on machines for the rolling and texturing of the glass is amazing to watch. Employees use long handled scoops to transfer about a gallon of molten glass to the rolling station. They have to flip the glass as they walk to keep it from solidifying and sticking inside the scoops, so sometimes, some of the glass spills out. Obviously, they have to watch how close they carry it to themselves and the guy at the rolling station. They also have to watch where they step! The tour also shows the glass blowing and rolling artists. What you see there and in the cold glass section are artists making items that have been ordered. So, some tours may see more elaborate craftsmanship than on other days...just a luck of the draw.I hope that the new owners can get the opportunity to make the shop better maintained. Old barrels hold the scraps of leftover colors that can be reused, but honestly, aren't that appealing to look at. The inventory of the place is enormous and I can only wonder if they have an automated system to help them keep track. Not sure if it would ever pay for itself, but I can't imagine how to keep track of it all.As Kokomo undergoes a revival in the downtown area (especially along the waterfront), it is good to see the city embrace its past and feature this special business. It is one of just a few remaining glass factories in the USA.Review #2473"

Richard P. "While an awful lot of businesses have come and gone from Broad Ripple, Artifacts has been a steady presence over the years. Founded in 1977, the shop continues to be "in the family" as it is currently owned by the daughter of one of the co-founders. Artifacts features the work of American artists and craftspeople. Items include jewelry, artful objects, ceramics, wood, glass, home & body accessories, paper goods, gifts, and other stylish wares and wearable art from the handmade movement.Artifacts is fairly accessible. It's located in a relatively small building right off the avenue. Parking is along the street. Broad Ripple has become mostly metered these days, though a bit of creativity can also result in some free spots not too far away. There's actually an accessible meter in front of this building. This is an older building - the door can be a bit heavy, though I've typically found the employees here to be helpful. The front counter can easily see the door. Because Artifacts has been around so long, they tend to be popular and the crowd on my most recent visit was steady. In terms of interior, accessibility is fairly decent - going toward the back, the left side is a little tight but I was able to squeeze through. I could not get through the right side of the aisle toward the back. They also have a clearance section that is not accessible (the entryway is too narrow). One important note - Artifacts carries a lot of fragile items. As a wheelchair user, I found myself being ultra-careful at certain points to make sure I didn't brush a table. I didn't have any close calls, but let's just say that doing figure eights is not a good idea in here. Artifacts carries quite a few really cool items. I found myself particularly taken by home interior items. This is definitely not a discount shop, though this is Broad Ripple and one should expect Broad Ripple pricing. Employees were friendly and I always enjoy stopping here. On this visit, I didn't end up purchasing anything but I certainly have before. This isn't necessarily a shop I treat as a destination spot, but if I'm in the area I'll definitely stop by. It's right down from The Vanguard and across from 317 BBQ and Dad's Kitchen. Curb cuts in this area are a little hit-and-miss. Broad Ripple has a whole lot going on these days, but there are still signs it's an older village. Broken sidewalks in places and uneven curb cuts can make using a wheelchair a bit challenging, however, generally I find it pretty passable. While prices can definitely go high here, there really is a pretty wide price range and it's relatively easy to find small gifts for reasonable prices. I'm notoriously cheap, hey it's true, and I find the prices here pretty workable with everything from truly affordable to definitely premium."
