For $5, you get to enjoy a family-friendly movie, the cereal bar, and relive the glory days of Saturday morning cartoons. I appreciate the throwback kids' movies like the Land Before Time, Mary Poppins, and Newsies - introducing the little ones to some cult classics that they're wayyyy too young to remember. I wish they had more healthy cereal options available (as most are Lucky Charms type sugar coma concoctions), but one cup of sugar overdose once a month won't hurt ya."

They have the older style seats but the recliners are so pretty nice. It obviously has been updated inside so it is pretty nice. The theaters are clean. The staff was ok and took care of our needs. It was nice enough that I wouldn't think twice about coming back"

Nicole S. "Hooray! Welcome to Indianapolis, Alamo. We have a similar movie theater in Carmel, but there's no need to compare. We can all play nicely together. A rising tide lifts all boats, so the more great movie theatres we have around Indy, the better for everyone. Alamo is known as the movie theatre that has strict rules about no talking and no cell phones when the movie starts. They will kick you out during the movie if you break these rules. Yes! I welcome our strict cinema overlords. This Alamo is unique because it has a lot of car and racing decor, specifically paying homage to our city's racing culture. There are Mario Kart consoles in the mini arcade, there's an IndyCar in the lobby that you can sit in and take selfies, there are murals and movie posters everywhere that are racing themed. My movie-going experience here was great. The chairs are leather, heated and they recline. They were so comfortable that I think I nodded off a couple of times during the movie. But before I fell asleep, I enjoyed a little (OK, big) order of loaded fries, which came with hatch chile queso, cheddar, cojita cheese, bacon, cilantro, scallions, and Sriracha sour cream. They were great, and like I said, one order was pretty big. They have a large menu of adult beverages, including local beers on tap, wine, cocktails and shots. I got a signature cocktail (the Fancy Gin & Tonic). I would call what I got a gin-flavored tonic water, because there was almost no gin in it! Oh well. Next time, I'll probably just get a beer or wine. The food menu is pretty big and your standard American offerings: pizza, chicken tenders, sandwiches, salads, wings. They do have a few vegan things on the menu: vegan cauliflower bites, a vegan burger, vegan supreme pizza and a vegan cauliflower basket. They have a kids menu too, for kids 12 and under. And an especially cool thing is that you get free refills on popcorn, soda and coffee. Speaking of kids: Tuesday matinees are the one time when you can talk and use devices, because it's a sensory-friendly movie time. The lights are a little brighter, the sound is a little lower, and guests can move around and talk. So Tuesdays are a great day to bring young kids, because you won't have to worry about disturbing others."

Jennifer L. "This is the last big box traditional movie theater in town unfortunately post pandemic. They get three stars because sometimes it's a little sticky and you all know it's expensive, but I still have great times with my kids there. A lot of their specials aren't very well marketed and the only way I know is by going to look at the website. If I ask, they'll give them to me, but they definitely don't advertise. The theater could thrive and not just survive by adding alcoholic beverages to the menu and getting more bougie with service to the venues, etc. My kids and I are obsessed with the theaters in Indianapolis that serve alcohol and bring your food and popcorn to you in your chair. I think something like that in Bloomington would do amazing. However, I just don't know if they have the bandwidth left to think outside the box and expand into new realms. We had a great time seeing cartoons, Aquaman 2, & Barbie here."

The Historic Artcraft Theatre

Richard P. "As I approached my 1,000th Yelp review, I knew that I wanted to tackle a special review to mark the occasion. When I got an invite to a friend's birthday party at The Historic Artcraft Theatre's Cottage, I knew I had my plan in place. The Historic Artcraft Theatre allows me to mark my 1,000th review in a way that touches upon several areas of my life. First, it is a Yelp review. Secondly, it is a cinema and I'm a film critic. Third, I was celebrating the birthday of a friend and a co-worker for my full-time gig. Finally, the theatre also plays host to Heartland International Film Festival events throughout the year and I'm heavily involved in Heartland. So, with a birthday party to attend at 4pm I made plans to head down to Franklin, Indiana earlier to enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant and I decided to catch a film as the theatre is slowly opening up after a year of pandemic-influenced moviegoing (or mostly not going to movies). The Artcraft Theatre is the marquee project of Franklin Heritage, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit organization that has practically written the textbook on how to renew a historic theatre and give it new life. The Artcraft Theatre is a 625-seat single-theatre cinema that has been open on Franklin's town square since 1922. It was built, and remains, in an art deco style. It was originally used for Vaudeville and silent movies. It was one of the first in the area to offer "cool air" and operated continuously for 75 years until shutting down due to the growth of multiplexes. The building features a full stage and an orchestra pit. The theatre had renovations in both 1936 and 1948. Franklin Heritage, Inc. purchased the building in 2004 and launched a $500,000 campaign to renovate the building. They continue to have a campaign going on to improve the seating in the theatre. The theatre hosts bi-weekly screenings of classic films at great prices (the highest price being $6). In 2015, Midwest Living chose it as one of the 4 Favorite Restores Small-Town Cinemas. Despite my familiarity with the theatre, I'd never been to it before today. I fell in love with it, though it's fair to say that wheelchair accessibility is not its strong suit. They've tried - even installing a single user accessible bathroom on the main floor - but there's only so much that can be done in a theatre this old. The doorways are wide enough. There's a second level that is obviously not accessible. There's an incline that's surprisingly steep into the auditorium - there are spots for chairs, though the auditorium slant means you'll want to use brakes (or sit in a theatre seat). Movies here are primarily 35mm. They showed a cartoon before today's screening of "Dr. Strangelove (Or How I Learned to Love the Bomb)." They are still currently limiting capacity to 30% and masks are required/social distancing expected. While Johnson County does not have a mask mandate, it seems like most places are at least recommending masks. It seems like it's mostly staffed by volunteers who are super friendly. You get a program as you go into the screening. I love that. They do offer concessions, though I didn't get any. I did use the accessible restroom and it's quite well done. They offer memberships with quite a few perks. Oh, and the traditional marquee is still there. The Artcraft Cottage is a former residential house behind the theater that you can rent for special events (like today's birthday party). You can also rent the theatre and they also have a handful of films where you can rent the theatre and do a private screening. They did play the national anthem prior to the screening - I wasn't sure if that was due to the film or a regular happening. If you look on their website, they even have some Zoom backgrounds you can use. They have a senior movie series and do other special screenings throughout the year. Sponsoring events, chairs, screenings, and other items is surprisingly affordable. As a community, Franklin has really embraced the Artcraft and despite the challenges of 2020 it has continued to survive. Franklin is only about 30 minutes south of Indianapolis. There's lots to do in Johnson County and a visit to Artcraft Theatre definitely needs to be on the schedule. It was the perfect place to visit for my 1,000th Yelp review!"

Chad M. "Very nicely redone ole theater that has live shows, comedy acts, bands, plays, and more! Step back in time to elegance when you walk into this place. They have a small concession stand just off to the left side when you walk in. Very nostalgic place to go for some low cost live on a stage entertainment. They kept all the glitz and glamour of years past when they carefully redid this place. For something different than a new release movie at a normal theater, catch a show here sometime. But wait, there's more, if you do want to see a special Christmas, Halloween, or seasonal classic type movie, they also play these too during certain seasons. Next time you see their outside billboard with a show you want to see, stop in a enjoy a night of fun. Limited parking on the street in front of the theater, but lots of parking across the street in the free town parking lot area."

Trying to decide to just watch on TV I saw an ad on FB for the Alex theatre. They have $5 tix! But even better you can rent the theatre for $25 an hour!! I texted the number and the manager set it up for us! It happened pretty quickly and was super simple. It was a bit of a drive, but so worth it! The theater seats like 484 people. The limit was 15 people for rental, but we only had 6 anyway. The building seemed small, street parking was all we saw, but worked out since we were the only people there and we had no issue getting my aunt's scooter out. The actual theatre takes the entire building, except for a small front concessions area. They had some old fun movie posters so it was cool. We were able to load up on snacks for pretty cheap! Popcorn, drinks, and candy! They have Pepsi products, which excited my aunt. The theatre was VERY clean. The seats were comfortable. We are used to fancy recliners, but I was never uncomfortable during the 2.5 hour movie. Bathrooms are located just in the back so you don't even have far to go. I am so glad I saw this ad and so glad that it was so easy to book. We were all excited to go see WW84 at a real theatre and we ALL loved the movie. My sister thought it could have been shorter, but I loved every minute!! Especially the end scene! It was a bit of a drive for us for a normal thing to do, but I do think we are going to try to go back. The manager made it so easy for us."

The theater does not look like much on the outside, but it is totally renovated on the inside. The ticket booth was not open when I was there, but that was cool I just went to the self-serve kiosk inside and purchased my tickets. I was going to purchase my tickets online, but they charge a $1.75 fee per ticket and I am cheap. When you do purchase your tickets, you also choose your seat, which I am a fan of.The concession stand has you typical candy and popcorn. There is also pizza and pretzels. They have self serve drinks machines and they also have booze. You can purchase beer, wine, or frozen margaritas. If you are into your movie and don't want to leave, you can order concessions to be delivered directly to your seat for an additional fee.Off to the back of the concession area and next to the restroom is a very small arcade. Richard P. "I'm not quite sure how I've never reviewed AMC Castleton Square 14, however, since I'm a film journalist I spend an awful lot of time in movie theaters statewide. For some reason, I just don't usually review them. AMC Castleton Square 14 is, of course, located within Castleton Square. It's a front-facing theater on the East 82nd Street side of the mall and easily visible from the street. While I miss the days when Castleton also had an outlot with a couple of indie screens (Castleton Arts was amazing), this is one of the theaters I visit most often as they seem to be selected a lot by studios wanting to market their films. This is largely owing to the theater's top of the line IMAX screen (slightly smaller than the Indiana State Museum's true IMAX), Dolby Stereo, and Real 3D. In terms of a theatrical experience, this is definitely one of Indy's top-notch places to go and an ideal theater if you're checking out a Marvel flick or a film with heavy special effects. In case it's not obvious, this is a 14-screen cinema. They do have smaller theaters, as well, that can handle films that have been in theaters a while and smaller films that may not be as expected to draw large crowds. There are a variety of premium options here:AMC Signature ReclinersReserved SeatingIMAXDolby CinemaClosed CaptionsRealD 3DOpen Captionand both Hindi and Japanese with English subtitles The theatre offers discount Tuesdays and discount matinees. This is also a theater with a MacGuffin's Bar in it offering alcohol. You can mobile order food and drinks and the theater has a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine. I'm a big fan of the reclining seats as they offer a bit more room and some distance between your next door neighbor. You can still cuddle up if it's a date night, however, for those of us who prefer distance it's nice to know you'll not have someone sitting right over you. The sound systems are wonderful here. The Dolby screens are awesome. I still find the employees a little hit-and-miss here and, I will say, I've also experienced multiple delayed screenings because of technical issues. They are very good at offering passes when this happens, but as someone who makes an effort to get out it's a pain to get to a theatre and have a delayed or canceled screening. Fortunately, it's not often. In terms of accessibility, generally it's quite good here. The front doors are manual and a tad heavy. However, everything is workable. All the theaters have accessible seating, though occasionally it's a little questionable on who gets it. Bathrooms meet ADA requirements and there's always an accessible stall. I do believe there's also a family bathroom here. They also offer audio description and assisted listening devices. They do offer the AMC Stubs rewards program that is a solid deal. You can buy tickets online, at kiosks in the theatre, or at the box-office. Among all the theaters in Indy, I likely spend the most time here. I enjoyed the theater even before renovations and I still think it's easily in the upper tier of Indy moviegoing experiences."

I ask what the token was for and I was informed every Tues is free popcorn....you won't find that in the big chains. The lobby and restroom were immaculate which is a big plus in my book. Makes the thought of making your way through the dark theater onto an unseen aisle and chair a lot more appealing. The staff was very friendly and even offered to help with a flashlight after the show to find my phone case that popped off when I dropped my phone in the dark. The theater is huge with comfy nicely spaced seats. It was very cold outside but nice and toasty warm in the large theater. (I have sat in many new chain theaters and froze to death before so cudos for not skimping on the heat) The lobby had a cool retro feel of grandure no longer felt in the new theaters. If this theater was in a hipster area of a large city it would be packed with artsie people raving about the place. My ticket was only $7.00 to see a hot first run movie "American Sniper". I was saddened by the small number of attendees because this theater is a real treasure in a town that has lost many of it's nice restaurants and businesses over the years. I hope the word gets out to the towns people who may not have gone to the Castle in a while how nice the Castle is these days and how lucky they are to have such a modernized yet vintage place to watch new release movies at a very small town fee."

As a retiree, I really appreciate the low prices during the day. The staff is courteous and I have rarely had to wait to purchase my tickets.I also appreciate that they don't show endless trailers (I think they target about 8 minutes instead of 20 or more at other theaters.) With the internet, I have usually seen most of the trailers before they appear in previews. My only negative is that the daytime hours are limited to when school is out or when it is the weekend. (I really appreciate the summer schedule.) I understand that it isn't cost effective to be open most days, but it is something the "competition" offers. I would also like to see more independent films shown in the small theater #8. The southside doesn't have an arts theater, so I have to travel all the way to Keystone at the Crossing or wait until the movie is released to online services/dvd to see some films. I plan on continuing to go to this local gem. If you haven't been here recently, then treat yourself to a much improved experience.Review #59"

Look for Rita Moreno's drug store character. And for those with any Steven Spielberg concerns, rest assured the expert theater hands of Tony Kushner are well placed within this movie. However, as it's now the time of COVID Omicron, the Imax was practically empty when we were there. The good news was that social distancing was easy. The bad news is that the depression of nationwide ticket sales unfairly skews the potential popularity of this movie. The Indiana State Museum parking lot was free thanks to our Imax purchase and getting here and out was really easy. The concessions featured wine, beer, and a fairly decent individual pizza. And of course, there's popcorn. We were here because we had a huge time opening between leaving Bloomington around 10 AM (family visit) and our Alaska flight to Seattle around 6:30 PM. If we schedule like this again, we'll be sure to give Downtown Indy a more complete look or maybe just hit the Museum and/or Imax. Richard P. "After nearly three years since my first review of Kan-Kan Cinema and Brasserie, it's time to revisit this Windsor Park treasure and Indy's only locally owned, non-profit arthouse theatre. While there are other theaters in Indy that will dabble in arthouse indies, only Kan-Kan is truly devoted to them. Yes, you'll occasionally see a wide release, such as Barbie, here. However, the vast majority of films you see at Kan-Kan are true arthouse endeavors. Kan-Kan is operated by Indiana Film Project, a locally-based 501c3 non-profit. You can join as a member of Kan-Kan at a variety of levels. You have the thrill of knowing you're supporting films and filmmakers in Indiana. Kan-Kan Cinema and Brasserie is Indy's only locally owned arthouse theatre. Yes, Landmark will play some arthouse - but is not locally owned. The new Living Room Theater also plays arthouse, though it's not locally owned.Kan-Kan is truly ours. The Kan-Kan name honors the legacy of Indy native Kurt Vonnegut. Kan-Kan screens indies, docs, classics, locally made films, events, workshops, and has become a favorite of a variety of Indy's best film festivals. The theater and the brasserie are together yet separate. This is not a dine-in theater. You can enjoy a meal without seeing a movie. You can enjoy a movie without dealing with the meal. Yet, they work beautifully together.Kan-Kan's restaurant and bar is located on the first floor of the two-story building. It's a nicely decorated setting that is pretty easily accessible. Kan-Kan has accessible parking out front (be aware there's a bit of a slanted grade to the parking lot). The double-sided glass doors are very workable. The Kan-Kan has three screens of varying sizes. Theaters 1 and 2 are accessed on the second floor for wheelchair users. There's an elevator to the second floor available via the restaurant (it's a nice elevator - NOT a freight). There's also an event space on the second floor and the second floor also has a cool little deck. If you can't find the elevator, everyone here is super helpful. This is a residential area. Kan-Kan is nestled in between Spades Park Branch Library and a short row of businesses located in former houses (Amelia's Bread, Stomping Ground, and a hair stylist). I'll note that there's a lot of improvements going on in this area and road construction is pretty common right now at this corner. I've never had any difficulty accessing any business here, though the sidewalks are a bit torn up (new curb cuts are coming, though!). I finally tried the restaurant last night. I'd note that it tends to be a bit pricey. For example, I ordered fish & chips ($26) and a Big Lug Pirate Cat Porter ($6 for draft). You can order less expensive items and they also have small plates and appetizers you can enjoy if waiting for a film. It was worth the splurge to me, though I'm not sure I'd do it often. Service was good, atmosphere was great, and there was one young lady who noticed I'd dropped a dollar at my table and came looking for me - I love that. I will also note they add a small tip for kitchen staff to the check - I'm not sure the percentage, though mine was a few cents over $1. The theaters have a casual industrial vibe. They're new and they're still in good shape three years later. They aren't the ultra-luxe seats some theaters have, however, they are nicely done. Again, most accessible seating is at the top of the theater (not my favorite). You could technically sit at the bottom if you wanted. Two event rooms are available. Kan-Kan can accommodate groups up to 145. In terms of other access concerns, there are assistive devices for low vision, low hearing, and hearing impairment. You can check with employees if these are needed. The theater opens 30 minutes before the first screening of the day (typically late afternoon/early evening, though different on weekends). The restaurant opens at 4pm on Sundays and 5pm every other day. The bar is a full bar. While the restaurant itself leans toward pricey, it's also worth noting that concessions are a notch below a lot of theaters in terms of pricing with the usual soft drinks, popcorn, candy, ciders, and beer available. This is not a dine-in theatre, though you can take drinks and alcohol in. If you're in the mood to hunker down at home, Kan-Kan typically also has an "on-demand" title available on its website. This started during the pandemic (when Kan-Kan actually opened) and has hung around. The memberships are amazing - if you live in the Windsor Park, Spades Park, or Springdale neighborhoods (and can prove it) you can even get a free membership. Listen. I love lots of theaters. Movies are what I do. But, Kan-Kan is truly Indy's own non-profit arthouse. It's run by film lovers, curated wisely, offers a great restaurant, is inclusive and accessible, and is just an absolute joy."

They also do run first-run features - for example, Black Adam is currently screening and they will be getting Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at the new Avatar flick among others. The YES Cinema is run by a Columbus, Indiana non-profit called Lincoln-Central Neighborhood Family Center, an area organization that assists numerous support systems, i.e. neighborhood improvement, education and employment development, health education. and more. This is a smaller theatre with only two screens. However, it's a well cared for cinema and they host the annual YES Film Festival that just ran this past weekend. You can also rent spaces for business meetings, private screenings and corporate and private parties. YES Cinema's two screens have relatively newer chairs, though they fall short of the more premium/luxury seating options available in a lot of theaters these days. That said, they're quite nice compared to a lot of indie/arthouse options you will find. The screens also do offer Dolby digital surround sound (which is fairly standard for most cinema chains, however, not always for smaller theaters or arthouse cinemas). The employees I met were friendly, the location in downtown Columbus is convenient, parking is free and plentiful, and accessibility is overall quite solid including parking, entryways, and screens. The theatre is clean inside and out and I was super comfortable. In terms of snacks, they do serve wine and beer here. You are not allowed to take in food or drinks of your own and they also have a notice that backpacks are not allowed. You can get a free small popcorn on your birthday (with ID and only on your actual birthday). Fun facts? The first film shown at YES Cinema was White Christmas (2004). The film "Columbus" holds the box-office record for sales at YES Cinema (which is incredibly appropriate - not only is the film set in Columbus, but it was actually filmed in Columbus). Under ordinary circumstances, I'd probably stick with a 4-star rating for the cinema. However, there are two reasons I'm offering up the 5-star:1) Because of the cinema's charitable roots it really is a movie theater that benefits a great cause. 2) Ticket prices for movies are typically $5 - that's right around half most theaters and even less than some matinee prices here in Indy. They do sometimes charge more for special events, but their prices make it affordable for families and for those on a limited income. There's an awful lot to love here. If I lived near Columbus, I'd be here all the time. If you're in the Columbus area, I definitely recommend it. It may not quite measure up to your more premium cinemas, but it's an awesome little theatre and one of Indiana's true cinema gems."

Katherine A. "We had a great time at the matinee today with our granddaughters. Tuesday matinees only cost $5.50 so taking the kids to the movies doesn't break the bank. We bought our tickets on-line and ended up paying a n $8 fee. We should have just bought tickets at the theater and then we could have avoided the fee. There as no line when we arrived. The staff is super nice - down to earth. They offer a number of deals on popcorn and concessions. The theater was super clean. The chairs are comfortable, but not recliners. There are cup holders at each seat. Our view was unobstructed and noise level was low even though there were a lot of kids in the theater. There is a cute little birthday room set up with deals for the kids to get snacks and see a movie. The restrooms were clean (although a number of stalls were non operational. There was plenty of free parking close to the door. The lobby is filled with electronic games to keep the kids occupied before the show. I can't wait to go back without the kids and see an adult show."

Niki B. "We came here to see Knives Out (one of the best movies I've seen in a long time) and this theatre was even better than I remembered. Why does it rock, you ask?! Here's five reasons:1) It's always less crowded than other theatres and therefore cleaner than most. 2) They have the best snacks. I love that you can get a small popcorn and it's freshly-popped. They also have Broad Ripple Chips, interesting candy, and a few other local and interesting options. 3) They have an adult 'lounge' where you can snag a beer or wine to bring into the theatre with you. 4) You might think parking is difficult because this theatre is located in a mall, but no, it's not. You can park right outside, take the escalator up, and BOOM - you're there.5) Want to eat dinner beforehand? Nordstrom Cafe is delicious and also secluded and usually calm. Located just a few yards from the theatre (you don't even have to go outside in between), you can get an incredible salad (my favorite ever), flatbread, famous tomato soup, etc. Now kick back and enjoy!"

Ericka D. "Okay, I am biased. In reality this place is probably a high 3 or 4, but I grew up here acting and I still love this local theater and their close knit tribe of loyal followers. It's an older building, the stage is okay and there isn't a ton of space, but they are creative with the money they have and do a lot of hard work with every performance. The performers here, truly love the stage and the theater life. It is volunteer run, so in this aspect it deserves a 5."

Amy E. "This was such an easy movie theater experience. Since you choose your seats ahead of time, you don't have to worry about getting there in time to get good seats. I sat in the privacy lounger which was very comfortable. The quality of the sound and screen was great. There was a huge line for food, but that's expected. I would go back."

Storm R. "I was looking for fun for our family during Christmas break and found tickets for this theater on Groupon. It was 75% of what I would have paid going to an updated AMC. Yea there were no recliners and the chairs were well loved. My family saw Sonic 3 and were pleased with the theater for the cost. The employees were great and it made for an affordable outing."

Roxanne B. "Great old theater in the heart of Danville. The nostalgic decor and old newspaper clippings really brought back old memories! There is one theater, pretty good size and the surround sound was great! They have a royal combo for $15 that includes a large , 1 refill, 2 drinks and a candy of your choice. Prices were $5 for the tickets of a new release and $3 for older movies. Definitely recommended!!!"
