This was my first time at the Honolulu zoo and at the wildest show in town event. Thank you Yelp for the invite. The event was held on a large lawn facing the stage,. There was some vendors and some educational 10th, fundraiser for the elephants and activities tables for the children. The theme of the day was elephants and the Hawaiian national butterfly. We stop by the elephant book and bought some cute matching bracelets in support the elephants. We signed up at the free ukulele giveaway. Then we stopped by the butterfly exhibit and I got plenty of knowledge about how butterflies hatch. They grow on in Hawaii. And little did I know I was ready for the pop quiz that was happening later on that day. There was a coloring contest and everyone had fun coloring in there butterflies. And then we walked over to the vendor that was telling food and ICs. And had a nice day. They gave away to ukuleles and prizes for the most creative and interesting colors from the butterfly color station.. The event is family friendly especially for children under 10. With the activities and the large area of grass to play. There was a lot of children enjoying themselves. It was a perfect day to be outside and have a picnic. I did not have the heads up I'm bringing my ownBlanket and chairs that I will bring the next time. The zoo is closed during the event I will definitely be returning to check out the zoo at another date.

At the Honokulu Zoo August 1. Beautiful perfect weather for this evening' awesome show featuring Johnny Helm and Friends! ---Took a quick stroll through the zoo before they closed. It's been a very long time since my last visit, and the zoo has made some massive improvements! I need to come back for a longer and leisure stroll! ---Trivia today (fun facts) was on the Hawaiian Monarch Butterfly. Hawaiian name? Pulelehua. Cold blooded or warm blooded? Cold blooded! ---food prices: see my pic. Expensive...you know what to do.....--- ambiance: family friendly atmosphere! Lots of little keiki around and very nice to see the kupuna out.

My high school friends and I used to go more often to these weekly Summer outdoor concerts when it was FREE! A few years ago, even the parking at the zoo was FREE! Now, the parking lot at the zoo has metered stalls and the Wednesday concerts have a $3 "Participation Fee". It used to be a donation, but now there's a cashier at the entrance and a Security Guard who looks in your tote bags! Times have changed...However, it's still a fun picnic opportunity! My God Daughter and her mom were visiting from Virginia and mentioned that they were going last week. I didn't get the message because I was taking a nap before my Night Shift job. This week, they messaged me earlier so I could adjust my sleeping time! Yay!So, knowing that the gate opens at 4:30pm, I got to Waikiki about an hour earlier and found FREE parking on Kalakaua Avenue before the Aquarium. My backup plan was to park for FREE on Monsarrat Avenue. I don't mind walking a few blocks in the evening and working off a few calories! It's a pleasant walk along Waikiki Beach!I waited under the shade of a large banyan tree for my out-of-town friends to arrive. The slight breeze was wonderful and the bench was an added bonus! The line to get in grew longer and longer, but I knew that inside the zoo, the grassy area can fit an almost unlimited amount of people! Just remember to bring your beach mat, towel, or blanket and have a seat on the ground! The Senior Citizens bring folding chairs and other people bring coolers. "No alcohol" and "No Pets" are the posted rules. If you don't have time to bring your own snacks, there are vendors for shave ice and other goodies! There are activities for the keiki such as Lego building, Coloring Contests, and drawings for an authentic ukulele! This summer, about 14 ukuleles were given away! Roy Sakuma did a good job as emcee with his Trivia questions. Two large stuffed Lions were given away as prizes along with some tote bags from the Honolulu Zoo. Mahalo to all of the volunteers!Every week, there's a different performer or group. This final week of the summer, we happened to see Jake Shimabukuro - the energetic ukulele genius! The place was quite crowded as the previous week had about one third of the crowd, according to my friends. We're looking forward to next year's lineup! It's such a good deal! Maybe I'll go in earlier and visit the zoo animals (between 4:30pm and 5:30pm)!

I am actually embarrassed that it's taken so long for me to review this. Great event where you can convene on the great lawn and listen to so some great music at sunset. It's not a chance to visit the entire zoo, but it is a chance to learn more about some awesome causes, participate in activities and hang out with some very cool people. I recommend cruising for street parking and finding your way to the zoo. You can bring food in picnic style, and just relax to the music of some great musicians and story tellers. We got to listen to Johnny Helm and Friends, and they were excellent! If you have the opportunity to attend, go for it! Totally affordable, kid friendly, and just something fun to do.

Great family fun. Relax and enjoy the music Wednesday evenings during a few weeks in the summer. Price has gradually gone up and is now 5 dollars for adult in 2018. Still a great value. You can bring your own food or purchase from vendor. Come early and have your kids draw in the tent in the back. There are drawings for ukuleles one for child and one for adult...still waiting to hear my name drawn. Proceeds benefit the zoo. Thanks Roy Sakuma, Honolulu Zoo, and entertainers who graciously perform.

A nice-sized crowd came out for Rolando Sanchez and Salsa Hawaii. Spontaneous dancing broke out in the audience at various times throughout the concert. The ukulele giveaway was fun and everyone was hopeful to win! Unfortunately, we didn't win anything...And it started to pour at the end of the concert, prompting everyone to leave quickly. There is a tent that sells food and drinks, so you don't have to schlep coolers of stuff to the Zoo unless you want to!The weather was nice and cool right until the end of the concert, when it started to rain! Good concert!
