Viet Chubby Boy aka Kevin makes a mean banh miThe Viet Chubby Boy serves fusion Vietnamese food combined with the best of all cuisines. All the homemade Vietnamese dishes I ate growing up are available on the menu, which not many restaurants offer. My coworker convinced me to go to Kalihi to try the best French dip. Indeed, it was the best French dip on Oahu. Filled with tender brisket meat, piled high with the usual banh mi garnishments, topped with a creamy avocado crema, and a side of rich pho broth. Is it authentically Vietnamese? No, but it's made Kevin's way (the delicious way). This is how fusion food should be done!Honestly, I cannot even remember anything else we ordered because that sandwich made me forget all my problems (at least for a week).I will have to come back to try the other dishes. Thanks for reading my reviews! Let me know what I should try next!

Words alone cannot describe how utterly amazing this place is. The comfort of the Pho and deliciousness of the Banh Mi has me in a chokehold that I don't want to tap out to.Why it took me to so long to come here? Because I was trying to find the perfect Pho on the Windward side, when in reality, Viet Chubby Boy was right here down the street from me the entire time!I truly cannot wait to come back!

I've seen this pop-up on my social media so have been meaning to try them. Pretty good menu assortment. Looks like they are great for catering. I'm always craving won tons so tried that. They were good. Smaller serving size so if you are hungry, you might want to supplement with an appetizer. I'd go back to try more things.

First timer for this spot. My friends and I went for lunch. The spot was a bit small with some tables. Parking available in the front. Location is same spot as Upscale Diner and Guieb Cafe. We ordered some things and shared.- Thai Tea - not too sweet, good- Spring rolls - freshly made, crispy and hot spring roll. Tasty- Grilled pork banh mi - the bread was crispy. The pork meat tender and juicy with flavor. Much more meat than veggies.- Lemongrass chicken vermicelli- the chicken was stripped rather than chunky. A little different. It was good, but I would prefer the chunky version.Attentive and friendly service. Food was delicious.

Viet Chubby Boy. Very descriptive restaurant name! So, when hubby and I were in the area running errands, we had an opportune time to visit this Vietnamese restaurant. Our server, who also is the owner and chef, Kevin, graciously explained that this was his nickname given to him by his wife when he was 50 lbs heavier. So, at 50 lbs lighter now, you won't find him chubby anymore. Love the restaurant's logo of Kevin's caricature profile on the staff t-shirts, caps, cover menu, and building front.Originally from Vietnam, Kevin started cooking when he was enrolled in the culinary programs at Leeward and Kapiolani community colleges. This brought back memories when he was younger, and he learned to combine them with the local Japanese and Korean accents. He then opened his restaurant in the former Old Saimin House in the Kapalama Shopping Plaza in July 2022.Viet Chubby Boy is a casual, hole-in-the-wall restaurant offers authentic, as well as creative Vietnamese comfort dishes using Korean (e.g., kim chee) and Japanese accents (e.g., cheese omelette topped with mayo and an okonomiyaki-style sauce) to accommodate local residents familiar to Asian multi-ethnic tastes. It also offers an interesting Vietnamese street food of fried corn with butter, tiny shrimps, hot sauce, and green onion. I liked the menu, which has pictures and a description of the item. The menu consists of:* Appetizers: rolls, fried corn, chicken wings, sausages, won ton, sliders.* Salads: wraps, papaya, tofu, beef, onion rings, fries, edamame, meat balls.* Banh Mi: French dip, meats, chicken, eggs, veggies.* Pho: beef, oxtail, chicken, seafood, veggies.* Stir-fried noodles: udon, egg noodles w/ seafood.* Soups: tom yum, won ton, tofu, chicken noodle, curry udon.* Vermicelli: spring rolls, chicken, pork, shrimp.* Rice plate: shaken beef, kalbi, chicken, curry, pork chop.* Drinks: smoothies, Vietnamese iced coffee, teas, juices, sodas. We ordered:* Beef Pho Combination. This pho had rare steak stewed brisket, beef tripe, beef balls, white & green onion, cilantro, and noodles, with the broth having a good balance of spices and seasonings. Additional fresh veggies of bean sprouts, basil, cilantro, jalapeno, and lime were provided. The broth was super flavorful, light, and clean.* French Dip. The banh mi had slices of roasted beef brisket, basil, bean sprouts, grilled onions, and cilantro with avocado sauce. The bread was crusty on the outside and soft on the inside, making it a perfect sandwich. And going a step further, dipping it into their existing pho broth made it a delicious and creative lunch! Each table has a cute combo of dispenser bottles for Sriracha and hoi sin sauce. You are also served a small dish of house-made sauce of garlic and chilis that provides another layer of deliciousness.Staff and Kevin who served us were super friendly and accommodating. Always with smiles, Kevin and staff ensure that our water glasses are filled, and that you're enjoying your meal there. You can tell that they are proud of their dishes made from scratch using high quality ingredients. The small restaurant is clean and welcoming. The walls are adorned with colorful photos of their menu items.Hours of operation are Mon to Sat 10a to 10p and Sun closed. Free parking in a private lot that is shared with other restaurants and bars in the shopping complex. Parking stalls are small, so it's best to go during off-peak hours when it is not as busy. With good food, an innovative menu, and great customer service, we look forward to returning to try other menu items. Support local!

With all the holiday food I've been eating, my tummy craved the simple comfort foods- here is my story On the road and on my way home I yelped "Vietnamese Pho" in close proximity to me and a couple places popped up. My first stop was closed for the holidays. So I select the next place closest to me and it turned out to be Viet Chubby BoyThey are located in a strip commercial center on North King Street a block east fron the Waiakamilo/King intersection. Parking available but I suspect during high noon or dinner hours, parking may become an arduous task.Mr Nguyen (he took care of business like no other, I'm guessing he might be the owner. But if so, he wasn't very chubby.)He handed me a menu offered me some water or tea while I wait for my order to go. Now how's that for service? The portions of the food order is huge. The taste of the food? I will no longer ever say Vietnamese food is Vietnamese food... The Kalbi strips were is seasoned to perfection. But the highlight was the broth of the beef pho I ordered I'm waiting for the holidays to be over so I can go back and visit Viet Chubby Boy and next time, I will dine in

I had this place bookmarked for da longest time after seeing a few of my Yelp buddies - Da FAMOUS Auntie Nadine C., Gail U., Bruddah Craig T., Deborah P., Gabriel P., Val D., & StaciLei T. post some awesome reviews, and great pics.Don't cha' think "Viet Chubby Boy" is a catchy name??? I was thinking that maybe I'd actually see a chubby cook or something, but da only chubby, or fat guy in da restaurant was me! Buwahahahahaha! As I walked into the restaurant with my homie - Gary T., we were greeted & seated right away.Menus were dropped off shortly, but truthfully, I already knew what I came here for......da Frrrrrrried Chicken wings with fish sauce. Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!I ended getting da spicy version of da Frrrrrrried Chicken wings with fish sauce, & my friend ordered a vermicelli noodle dish with grilled pork & spring rolls. As an appetizer, we shared some onion rings. What can I say about da grub???Loved the taste of the wings, although I didn't think my wings were spicy. The deep fried wings were a bit overdone, as the meat was a bit dried out, but of course the fish sauce really helped put back some moisture in those wings. My meal came with a scoop of white rice & a salad. The onion rings were done perfectly! Big chunks of onions, battered & deep fried to perfection. My friend Gary enjoyed his noodle dish.Overall, a positive dining experience. If you like hole-in-da-wall joints, Viet Chubby Boy is your classic example, as it provides classic Vietnamese comfort food.

Viet Chubby Boy has one of the BEST tasting pho broths on the island. It may be a small hole in the wall type restaurant, but their food has been nothing but satisfying. We often come here for lunch with coworkers since it's close to work and one of our favorite options. The place is small but we never had trouble finding a table. They have photos of their dishes that decorate the walls and the facility itself is organized and tidy. The workers here are always friendly and welcoming. I recommend this place to anyone who enjoys Vietnamese food or a really good pho and banh mi sandwhich!

Went Viet Chubby Boy for lunch and boy it was very crowded.I ate the BBQ pork sandwich which was very good, the bread was nice and crispy on the outside and soft inside. The pork was tasty and the vegetables were fresh. My wife had the lemon grass beef sandwich and a side order of crispy fries. She enjoyed her sandwich and the fries came out hot and crispy. So far every time we went we tried different items and have not been dissatisfied with the food and the quality and taste.During lunch time parking was very limited, because of the many restaurants in the same area sharing the same parking lot.
