Hidden gem of DowntownYou cannot walk past Tonkatsu Sangi and not smell the delicious aroma of tonkatsu. They also offer Gomaichi's tantan, sunghon, and shoyu ramen. I ordered a katsu curry. Everything is made fresh, so be patient. The rice is cooked perfectly. Both katsu cutlets were nice and crispy. It's a little dry, but dunking the katsu into the rich curry is perfect.I haven't tried the ramen since the rebrand. The last time I had Gomaichi ramen was at their last location on Keeaumoku (currently Azure). The sunghon ramen was the fastest remedy to a cold/flu. Definitely need to come back to try the ramen next time. Thanks for reading my reviews! Let me know what I should try next!

Food quality: 5/5Service: 5/5Cleanliness: 5/5Value: 5/5Don't skip on: The TonkatsuTrying out Tonkatsu Sangi for the first time and it did not disappoint! Wow!! The tonkatsu just melted in my mouth when I took the first bite and it was an amazing experience! The crust was so crispy and perfectly fried and the pork was moist and perfectly cooked. This order came with mini Tan Tan ramen and it was so rich and flavorful! The ladies working at this shop were so sweet and welcoming. They were helpful with the questions I had and were so kind. I would be interested to try the other time - the tenderloin, which is more lean. Also would be interested to try the other ramen there as well! Just need to find a way to get a bigger stomach

I ordered the combo mini ramen & tenderloin katsu and paid about $20. Service was pretty quick. I only waited about 10 min for my food & they cook everything to order. The tenderloin katsu was so soft and moist. It came with rice & cabbage salad. And the ramen noodles were cooked perfect with a rich broth. I work downtown so I will definitely be back.

Tonkatsu Sangi is located in Pioneer Plaza. It's a takeout style restaurant but if you want to dine there then there are tables outside but they are often occupied during the lunch rush. Sometimes you'll get lucky but if not, taking it back to dine comfortably in your office also works. Most of their customers are people whom live/work in downtown as they can easily walk over but if you don't live/work in downtown and want to give them a try, there is street metered parking around the area. Originally, we wanted to order 2 Nanban Plates but they were in the middle of frying their next batch of chicken and they didn't have enough for 2 full plates. The cashier stated they have enough for 1 full Nanban Plate and 1 Nanban + Mini if we didn't want to wait for the next batch of fried chicken to be ready. We took her recommendation. I gave my guest the Nanban Plate and I ordered the Nanban + Mini-Shoyu. Our order only took a few minutes to be ready as they were already frying that batch when we ordered. We got lucky and scored the table right outside their door. The Nanban Plate comes with Miso Soup and the Nanban + Mini-Shoyu came with a small ramen that included 1 piece of seared char siu. Both came with one scoop of rice and some shredded cabbage. Nothing beats fried chicken fresh out of the fryer. The pieces were tender, moist and flavorful. My ramen was decent and a nice side given the circumstances. Worth checking out if you live/work in the downtown area but not sure if they are destination worthy due to the parking situation.

I excited to try this place when I found out from my friend that this was the same owner of the former Menchako-tei! The menu was on a smaller scale and I wanted to try their Tonkatsu or the Chicken Nanban. I missed their old restaurant and menu when they were in the Keeaumoku area. Since I don't work in the area and would have to find parking, my coworker agreed to come with me to pick up lunch. We called in the order, but our order wasn't quite ready when we stopped by. I drove and waited on the side on Merchant Street while my friend picked up our food. Tonkatsu Sangi is located in the Pioneer Plaza building with all the other restaurants. The Tonkatsu curry was really moist and juicy inside and crunchy on the outside. It wasn't dry liked some places. I really enjoyed each thick piece with the curry! So nice that they re-opened again under a new name, although I really missed dining at Menchako-tei! Next would like to try their Nanban chicken. I liked theirs because of the non-mayo sauce. I can't wait to go back!

Another hidden gem located in Pioneer Plaza, Tonkatsu Sangi is a quanit little shop with little customer space. Not much more than counter space for ordering and a small fridge holding drinks. I ordered a regular katsu curry plate and got a can of coke for a grand total of 21.99. they make the food to order so expect a slight wait. I ended up waiting about 7 minutes. There are tables and chairs all over the hallways of pioneer plaza so I sat while I waited. Upon first glance of my food, the katsu looked darker than I anticipated and I feared it was burnt and would be dry. Happy to report that it was not at all. The katsu was crispy and delicious on the outside while still being super moist inside. The curry sauce was thankfully not runny like so many other places, but nice and thick and had really excellent flavor. All in all this place is great. Would I come here again? Yeah sure..on paydays when I have $20 to spend on delicious food. Pro tip. Get here early. The lines get rather long and they sell out occasionally.

Headed down to Pioneer Plaza from top of Fort Street to try this place. I mainly wanted ramen cuz I was cold...and nanban b/c I could smell fried chicken in the office.Out of Nanban...okay, tonkatsu then. Tonkatsu is delish. Panko very light and almost like you can taste each individual piece of panko rather than it being heavy and more like a coating. I don't like katsu sauce anyways, but the dressing was delish so I did a little dipping in that instead. Only problem was that 1 piece was half fat and a few pieces were still bloody. I can just reheat later.Ramen was okay. It did the trick and warmed me up. But nothing extraordinary. Oh Char siu was soft.Tons of food...didn't realize I still got rice when I got the ramen. Love the super fine cabbage.Overall really good. Good like Japan? I dunno b/c still never been. But in the meantime, I'll be back on cooler days since that can be a hot walk during lunch.

One of a kind place in downtown. Seriously no other place to get real japanese tonkatsu. Parking is difficult unless you work nearby. Otherwise you have to find meter stalls and walk. Or park in a garage and pay. Takes a little bit since food is prepared to order. Tonkatsu was good. Light and crunchy breading. Tender meat. Not super fatty. Katsu sauce was not my fave though. It was a bit on the sweet side with a very light flavor. Will def hit the spot though if youre craving katsu in downtownTheyre located in pioneers plaza food court on the ground floor. Hopefully they last since this is the 3rd or 4th business thats been in that spot in the last 10 years.

....Wednesday at high noon....located inside 900 Fort street mall at Pioneer Plaza...the mall is buzzing with hungry hybrid office workers. The dining area consists of a long corridor with "cute" tables along the sides of the mall. I ordered the tonkatsu w/mini shoyu ramen and she had the shoyu ramen with char siu bowl. Our order took about 15 minutes to prepare and the tonkatsu was made to order. The ramen noodles were not satisfying. Compared to Marukame, who make fresh noodles, the ramen noodles were NOT titillating! The broth was good and had a "homey", cozy, comfortable feel to it. The tonkatsu was "made fresh" hot and "begged" to be dunked into the tonkatsu sauce! Upon dunking, the crusty outer layer became glistening with the dark liquid sauce. The first bite gave a nice crunch, then a moist texture mixed with the tonkatsu sauce. But wait a minute! There wasn't any sweet & tangy flavor to the sauce! Great tonkatsu sauce has hints of honey, apples and lemons. This sauce lacked that "oomph".In general, the taste, flavor and the price didn't impress me. I had to try it and I was not satisfied with the experience.
