Went to Tanaka of Tokyo for an anniversary celebration and CJ made the evening so much fun! It was super entertaining watching him cook the food + the funny songs and stories he was telling us. We got the shogun set and CJ cooked everything perfectly! He even asked us how we wanted our individual steaks cooked + gave us tips on what type of sauce goes best with each item. The staff were all really attentive and were always nearby to clear dishes and refill our water. It was a fun experience and they even did a quick song for our anniversary haha. 10/10 experience and was very happy and full.

Herein is my response to Hiroshi L, the business manager of Tanaka of Tokyo West, regarding my recent review which I had made earlier today about the photos taken in your establishment. It seems to me that you're only concerned with the bottom line that you're in charge and that you have the last say. Mind you, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Here is my suggestion. All you have to do is have your people redesign the background of the complimentary restaurant photo to focus on your guests who pay a lot for the meals -- not on a random anonymous cook, and then use the photo for marketing purposes. That's the only critique I have. BTW, I am only criticizing the marketing photo and nothing else.FYI, never once did I downgrade my thoughts on your excellent food and staff. I had also given Tanaka of Tokyo five-star reviews in the past.

Haven't been to Tanaka of Tokyo for over a decade. Food is the same, show is still the same. It is exciting for first timers! The chef will make joes and always do the fire volcano with onions. Very fun and exciting show before dinner. Ice cream for dessert is from Dave's.The steak was cooked medium rare but more medium side for my liking. I thought it was also slightly over salted and the scallops I ordered were over cooked and shrank.Overall, this place is a good restaurant to take friends who are visiting and want tenpanyaki. They also do vegetarian meals as well which accommodated our friends.

It's a Saturday night and was lucky to get in with no line waiting. We met up with some friends. Staff was very accommodating, pleasant, and friendly. We had attentive waitresses and a cool chef. The ambiance was alittle on the darker side to set the mood of a nice steakhouse. We had Lobstertails, wagyu, shrimp, and so much more. All the food was superb! Chef was very entertaining and made everyone laugh. We had a great experience. I highly recommend to everyone to checkout this dinner with a show restaurant.

Tanaka of Tokyo represent great service and talented young teppan chefs! They know how to entertain their audience with their skills of the fire presentation done so well jumping in our seats! Some I heard from other tables screaming with laughter joyfully about on how the fire presentation was done! EXCELLENT BRAVO! Our food was made to perfection! It was my hubby's birthday staff came over to sing him to sing happy song! We also got to know the young couple sitting next to us! It's a small world my son once worked in the restaurant sector so did I. I once worked in the first Teppanki restaurant in Kaimuki! But there was no performance at all... We're planning on going back again soon! The manager greeted each table ..Outstanding

We ate at Tanaka of Tokyo Ala Moana during Christmas/New Years holiday with family. Their menu was excellent. We ordered and ate variety of prime steaks, wagyu, salmon with fried rice. The chef was excellent entertainer/cook. He tried to entertain us with his local monologue and combine it with little comedy while we waited for our food orders. It took him 30 to 40 minutes to get everyone's dinner ready. I was starving and so I ate everything that was on my plate. Steak was tasty and delicious. I was satisfied because my tummy said so, I was full. The service was awesome. Everyone was busy trying to accommodate local patrons as well as tourists. Reservation is a must or you will wait forever (seriously!), otherwise this place rocks! The ambience there is a lot of commotions.

As far as Teppanyaki goes, this is pretty par for the course. It's a solid meal and definitely comes with enough food. Maybe a bit pricy, but nowadays everything is so expensive

It's been YEARS since I've been to a teppanyaki restaurant. A family friend recently got a job promotion and celebrated by having an appreciation dinner. The have sets on their menu that range from around $50-$65 and include a salad, miso soup, some pickled items, and ice cream dessert. I got the sirloin and shrimp combo, my boyfriend got the steak, and my mom got the scallops. Some other folks on our table got the salmon, which looked good, and the lobster / seafood medley. There was about 10 of us total that were divided by two different teppanyaki chefs. Me and my boyfriend sat on the edges of the chef divide, so I got one chef and he got the other. Luckily for me, the chef cooking up my food was a bit more seasoned than the guy cooking for my boyfriend's half of the table. That was most evident in the fried rice, mine was light and honestly perfectly cooked while my boyfriend's fried rice was slightly burnt and over soy-sauced. The theatrics were fun and all but I wouldn't necessarily say that I was particularly captivated by the show. A lot of people we were dining with said that they love this spot and that they always bring / recommend Tanaka of Tokyo to their family and friends who come to visit. The thing about seeing your food being cooked is that you can also see how much butter is being put in. They have a mountain of butter that they scoop from and plop onto all the different foods on the flat top. Trust me, I love butter-- but seeing it used in this quantity even gives me the ick. But hey, butter makes food taste good. I can't imagine cooking multiple proteins on one flat top with probably very limited control of the heat. They have a photographer on staff who comes around to take pictures and then towards the end of the meal comes back with those printed pictures to sell to you. I believe it's $15 per photo if you buy 3. It was funny when the photographer asked two people who are not a couple to do a heart pose / kiss on the cheek photo. Funny for me, awkward for them. If I'm going to leave a restaurant smelling like smoke, I'll go the typical yakiniku route. If you can't trust yourself to cook your own meats on a grill and have a more Americanized palate - Tanaka of Tokyo is your spot.

Decided to visit Tanaka of Tokyo before Valentine's Day dinner, knowing it would be crazy on Valentine's Day! It was still pretty full I guess others were also trying to beat the Valentine's Day's dinner crowd. We started with drinks I had a Gin Tonic and my wife had a Mai Tai the Gin Tonic was ok and my wife really enjoyed her Mai Tai.I ordered the Daimyo which was a steak, lobster tail and scallops and also ordered garlic fried rice.It also comes with green salad, miso soup, grilled shrimp, and vegetables and dessert which was a choice of ice cream or mango sherbet. My wife had the Wagyu steak, which she really enjoyed it was very flavorful and tender. We both were Happy with our choice for dinner.Being located in the Ala Mona Shopping center on the Mauka side of the shopping center near Mai Tai's Lounge and California Pizza there was parking even though it was pretty busy.Dress is casual. They did have quite a few walk in some stayed some went elsewhere, due to the long wait time, so better to make reservations.
