Like a ton of local kids growing up in the 90's, I didn't become privy to good omakase until I was in my 20's. Sushi Sasabune--the first time I had real otoro and chutoro--one of the most indelible food memories of my life. Not to hate on ahi, but damn. Not the same. I will never not recommend Sasabune to visitors because of my experiences there.Presently, there are a ton of omakase places in Honolulu. And I gotta say, I haven't been to a bad one. If one is willing to pay a decent chunk, we have good sushi in Honolulu. A few months ago, I found myself in Sushi Que, and it was that same feeling I felt almost thirty years ago. This place is... different. It's not just the chutoro, the lobster, the bisque, the sashimi, and countless other dishes, AND the fact that it's BYOB (YES!). As I've gotten older, I've had to opportunity to dine at Michelin star sushi places in LA and Tokyo. I rank Sushi Que among these. Service is incredibly efficient. The amount of food is daunting in a good way. It's the closest thing to being in a Japanese omakase in Hawaii.Parking can be a challenge (of course), and reservations need to be booked a couple months ahead. But if you manage to get there, you'll be wiping your sashimi on a slab of citrusy pink salt ice before popping it in your mouth. You'll also be eating ikura so full and delicate, that it you try to pick up a single orb of it with your chopsticks, the egg will probably burst.

Sushi Que seems to be a local favorite for getting omakase at a bargain - they offer 2 seatings in the evening, and the counter seating has 9 seats - when booking, make sure you request a seating at the sushi counter for a better experience! Our omakase consisted of 15+ items, which included o-toro, miugai, hamo, lobster, wagyu, anago, kohada, iwashi, nodoguro, and ayu.Presentation was simple and clean, and there were uses of Himalayan salt and lime juice.Staff were friendly, and the place is small and simple, with light wooden decor.+bargain omakase+request central sushi counter seating

Wow, such an incredible omakase experience and reasonable I might add :)I counted 15 different treats! Each one, full of flavor and presented delicately by Chef Takeo, with a few courses served by staff.Since it's BYOB, we started with a round of sake for Chef Takeo and his team. After everyone at the counter was seated, we all started with a RICH seafood broth. Wow! That got our fullest attention and deserved another pour of sake! After the seared ahi and okra, we were presented with a chilled salt slab and calamansi. Such a novel idea to enjoy three kinds of fresh sashimi :)Then we all had plump oysters. Loved the sea grapes as a topping to balance out the texture. Fun doesn't stop there, they presented us next with succulent lobster tail! So good!!!Our dining experience kept getting better when Chef presented the exquisite slices of otoro and chutoro, so yummy!!!Hard to pick a favorite course but if I had to, the flounder with shiso leaf is in my top 5 :) Next course was the ika with yuzu and then a generous portion of shrimp. The ikura was a fun burst and I gotta say, their seasoned rice and quality first harvest nori is exceptionally delicious! Love the smokey flavor :)Overall, this was an incredible omakase dining experience. The food was fresh and flavorful. Their service was fun and lively. Chef Takeo has a Ska Playlist that he's jamming to which I absolutely loved too.The best time to call is between noon and 5pm to make a reservation. As of September 9th, they are booked solid through November. Totally worth the wait!

Aloha, if you love sushi, Sushi Que is a must (if you can get in). It's also BYOB, which makes for a more affordable evening, yes! Chef's wife serves, while chef works hard preparing your next dish. They also love when you share some sake with them, LOL. It's a fun sushi bar! Sitting at the bar, there are 2 seatings. Whereas sitting at the tables (6 pax) seats at 6:30 (in between and overlapping the other2 seatings). They are well organized and it's a fun lively place. Solid sushi, easy access on King street, next door to Kyung's. Enjoy!

With so many Japanese omakase restaurant selections in town now, Sushi Que gets my vote of quality, service, and value. The husband and wife duo has successfully gained a following where it takes a minimum of two months to get into the door.Pro tip: make future reservations when you're there. Seating times are 5:30pm and 7:30pm for the sushi counter. They have 9 seats. Regular tables have different time seating, but I prefer the counter. You'll leave full. At the end of the course you'll be given an option for additional until your hearts content.

Had the best time here during my mini moon with my hubs. The fish selection was exceptional and very fresh. You can tell this is a unique omakase spot just by the soup they serve for appetizer. It wasn't your average miso soup, but almost like a bouillabaisse. You honestly get a little of everything here: appetizers, sashimi, nigiri, hand rolls, 2 soups, and dessert. My favorite part of the meal was when they brought out the salt rock to eat with the 3 types of sashimi. This omakase spot is run by a husband and wife, who are the sweetest people. We can't wait to come back! Reservations are extremely hard to get as there aren't many seats, so always try to book in advance!

Omakase dinner in Honolulu, Hawaii...If you're a brave eater and enjoy pleasant surprises, you will like Sushi Que!Along with its clever business name (que is "nine" in Japanese language), the place is cleanly modern (check out the convenient restroom), and the service is efficiently exceptional and personable! Our party of 3 sat at the sushi bar and conversed with the chef and server - they both have excellent English skills and are witty (ask them about their hiking and camping adventures and how they moved to Hawaii!)The food was over the top!Presentation, quality, taste... all of the little attention to details - like squeezing the lime juice on the Himalayan Salt slab and "shabu shabu-ing" the trio of sashimi across the slab... are much appreciated! Other standouts were the Lobster, wagyu, ikura, oyster, seafood bouillabaisse, Angel shrimp, and extra nori on the tip of the handroll so that the rice doesn't ooze out of the cone!It was one of the most fun foodie adventures!Thank you, Paul, for this super memorable experience and one of the best dinners ever!

Two months. That was the waiting time to come here with some good friends. You see, I took my sister and family to my go to place for omakase in January and the chef asked me casually if I had ever been to Sushi Que (SQ). I looked them up after I got home and read Randy S.'s review and glanced at tantalizing food porn. I texted some good friends where the wait was 2 months to secure seating for 3 people. Earlier tonight we arrived at SQ, which shares a small parking lot behind with Golden Pork. It was a state holiday today so we took advantage of street parking with counter reservations at 5pm. After we sat down the staff asked us if we needed glasses for our drinks as it's BYOB but these friends tonight are eaters and not into alcohol. Not too long after the remaining people for the 5pm counter reservations arrived, food was served to us by courses.Generally speaking, I was impressed with the chef's skills of various preparations of seafood. He clearly pays attention to detail and many dishes were executed well. My favorite of the evening was the torched shimaaji with yuzu kosho that hit so many notes in my mouth. The miso soup had finesse and clearly tasted the dedication and time spent to render the fish broth. We were asked of any allergies where I informed them my dislike of fish with shiny skin (i.e. saba and kohada), where the chef substituted the Saba offering with tuna instead. I also enjoyed the South Africa lobster tail that was cooked medium rare. Reminded me of eating something similar during my visits to Sasabune.Service was outstanding. Seems like a team of husband and wife where they worked in unison serving eager patrons. It was a full house when we left at 630pm.Come to find out, the couple knows Chef Ryuji, who suggested I come to SQ to try them out. This island is indeed small. Overall, a very satisfying meal spent with good friends on this Prince Kunio holiday. Didn't have to work all day today and ate out for all three meals today with good foodie friends, with the best as the omakase at SQ. I'm determined to drag my family here for dinner one night. NOTE: There are two seatings of 5pm and 730pm for their counter seating that fits 9 seats. Currently there's a 2 month waiting period as it's fully booked and they don't make reservations more than 2 months out.

I was very fortunate to be included in a group dinner at a new Omakase restaurant called Sushi Que. Small location on King Street with a couple tables and an L shaped sushi counter that seats 9 guests is perfect for a nice and relaxing dinner. It's BYOB at the moment with no corkage fee which helps keep your costs down. The Great: $100 omakase that is simply amazing. Each course is fantastic and sit at the counter to watch a sushi master prepare each dish. You can also order additional items or revisit an omakase item at the end, I ended up adding on the O-Toro, YakiShirako, Nodaguro, and a Kawahagi to top off the evening. The chef and his wife are great hosts we had a lot of fun chatting with them through the evening. The Good: Due to it's small seating capacity you have to make a reservation well in advance. I believe they are already may be booked out a couple months but it is well worth the wait! The Okay: The only minor inconvenience is the parking. Very small lot behind the restaurant otherwise it will be looking for street parking in the neighborhood or King Street. Some in our group found parking a few blocks away but that's minor inconvenience for such a great experience! Overall: We noticed many Omakase style sushi bars opening over the last year but not many that can match the quality with the price. Highly recommend Sushi Que for anyone who loves great sushi!
