With hurricane Olivia approaching the state it looked like our plans for a very special weekend and our first Sunset On the Beach would be denied. But with the quick thinking of all involved the event was moved from Friday to Sunday and the weather was absolutely "postcard perfect"!This event was extra special because our daughter would have roles on both Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum PI shows which I was a big fan of in the 70's .The excitement was being felt by myself and my wife (who was also celebrating her birthday) as the limousine provided by CBS picked us up at the hotel. Anticipation grew as we made our way through the dense Waikiki traffic to the event site. As we approached the massive crowd of cheering fans the big screen was now in full view as the limo took it's place in the lineup to the red carpet drop off area.As we stepped onto the red carpet walking a few steps behind our daughter I took a deep breath and tried to keep my composure making sure not to make "da Shaka gesture" or yell out a big "Chiiihooo". As we approached the cheering fans we went ahead of our daughter who was signing autographs and interacting with the fans to the security check in for the VIP area where a hospitality tent was in order with some food and beverages. We continued onto the the red carpet passing a host of photographers, cast members, radio broadcasters and newscasters making our way to the VIP seats. The sun was now about setting and all the cameras and phones were now focused on capturing yet another beautiful Hawaiian sunset after weeks of tropical storms. As the day became night the University of Hawaii band kicked up the music from the original Hawaii Five-0 ( celebrating it's 50th anniversary)and Magnum PI While scenes where being shown on the big screen. Soon after Cyndi Lauper took the stage and brought the crowd to their feet with some of her hits from her collection. Producers, cast , crew , fans and many more were acknowledged on stage. And now it was time to see both season premieres before the rest of the world! Opening with Magnum PI and followed by none other than Hawaii Five-0. The clarity of the screen reminded me of the drive-in movies and the sound system magnificent. Both shows were action packed thrillers and the cast was brilliant. Congratulations to CBS, producers, directors, cast, crew and everyone else for your success and continued success! Mahalo to the Mayor, HPD, and everyone who had a part in keeping Sunset on the Beach safe and entertaining for Locals and Visitors alike.Aloha#happymom&pop@sunsetonthebeach

Awesome event! Thank you Southwest Air for assisting with sponsoring this event. This was a relaxing event with Kama'aina and visitors sharing the sun, sand, entertainment, movie together. HPD was visible and we felt safe even when seated on the rock wall along Kalākaua Avenue! The inclusion of Mana Maole provided all of us with cultural appreciation! Please continue these events. With much appreciation

Love the location! A good place to watch a band or movie, but there is nowhere to sit except on the uncomfy rocks. You must be a VIP for any chairs.

Sunset on the Beach! What a perfect way to start a vacation in Hawaii! A live band plays before the movie, you get to see the sun set right before the movie, concession stands for poi mochi, shrimp plates, etc. On this particular night they had games pertaining to the Pro Bowl, live band and the NFL cheerleaders. The added bonus was you can see the fireworks on the other side of the beach thanks to the Friday fireworks show at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and the feature presentation of Blindside.Come early for the limited seating or check with your hotel to see if they lend out beach chairs. You're quite welcome to set up your beach towel on the sand, but about 20 mins into the movie your @$$ will be on hurt status!

Sunset on the beach is one of the BEST ideas the city has ever come up with. It officially started in 2001, I believe, and that's what the mayor said last night. I remember going every week with my friends then. Then it was cut down to once a month and went all over the island.Last night was the first time I've gone to sunset on the beach since that first summer and I enjoyed it just as much. We potlucked it and brought blankets and drinks down to the beach. My friends and I went to watch the Hawaii International Film Festival showing of, One Voice. A documentary that followed the song contest directors as they prepared with their classes for the Kamehameha Schools Song Contest. Sunset on the Beach is great because it allows tourists and locals alike to come down to Waikiki beach to relax and enjoy a movie, whether it's a HIFF film, or an older film that's not in theaters anymore. This concept gives people the opportunity to head down to the beach, eat some food, and enjoy a movie with their friends and family. They also have a few food booths there, parking is easy to find, you can park along kalakaua and Kapiolani park, at the zoo, or the Kapiolani park parking lot. After the movie, you can walk around waikiki or just head home early. It was a beautiful Hawaiian night, the sun had just set, and the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach was just wonderful. What better place to enjoy a free movie on the beach than in Hawai'i?I truly hope the city continues this wonderful event.

This is a great event for locals and travelers alike. It is fun to kick back on the beach and catch a film. Saw the Elvis movie Blue Hawaii last weekend and headed out tonight to see what is showing. I'm not sure why, but the website for this event doesn't have anything listed, yet movies are being played. Anyone know where the accurate list is located for the shows?

I've been going to these venue's offered by the City & County of Honolulu for the past 4 years now, and have never had any problems. I always take the family and the beach chairs...and just cruz until the movie starts. Show starts at dusk (7pm usually), so you might want to get there early, because parking is a bitch. Great place to take a date. There's food and live local entertainment before the show starts. Starbuck's is at the corner and Teddy's is there too.Movie's I've seen include:1. The Da Vinci Code2. Happy Feet4 star's, because there's always room for improvement.

This was a great little family thing on a Friday night. We went to go see Hawaii Five-O on veterans weekend. I'm so happy we went early. Thinkig it would start at 7 we decided to go at 3. Even then there was still hardly any parking. Ugh! But we still got a pretty good parking spot & pretty good place to sit on the beach. Then the show started, it was horrible. Once it started people were getting up walking around and blocking the screen. Food was expensive but of course it would be. But it was still a great experience for the family!

Was very disappointed showing up May 11 around 6:20 ish an not seeing anything with setting up or chairs for the viewing today. Was excited with going with my Daughter for her first experience with it. Myself hasn't been able to see one for some years as well. Very disappointed with the web site not stated it being canceled either. .
