This is an old time restaurant, used to go a lot in high school and college (which was a long time ago). And while it was crowded, the clientele like me are on the older side. The decor unchanged from years ago. Even the small Japanese garden is still there. The menu is comforting, nothing fusion. Food like your Japanese grandmother would serve. There is even an okazuya and there are so few of them left. The menu is extensive, you can get saimin, hamburgers, donburi, teishoku and other items. The miso soup was a little too strong with miso but unlike most Japanese restaurants there was plenty of little cubes of tofu. My pork donburi was soupy and while there were eggs, they seemed scrambled and didn't bind with the pork. And maybe they use msg because after leaving there I was very thirsty for a couple of hours. But it was good to visit--like seeing an old friend that you haven't seen in a while.

I came here on a recommendation 2 weeks ago and they had leftover bentos in their front bento case and I got these large bento boxes filled with tempura shrimp, fried chicken, teriyaki and half a hit dog over rice and some daikon for Luke $4 bucks so I bought 3 of them, a container of Nishime and a container of shoyu hotdogs. All of it Ono. This evening I came here for sit down dinner: the place is clean and the staff are friendly. I ordered a small won run min, a Akita special where you can chose 2 main dishes which I chose Jumbo shrimp tempura, marinated fried chicken which came with rice salted cabbage,, graded radish, tmoura cam with a green bean and a slice of eggplant. Brah, I am FULL! let's start with the won tun min it is probably best won Tun min I've experienced in Kaimuki. I'd say the best Shrimo tempura I've had in Kaimuki for the price. What's to say about the crunchy savory marinated fried chicken is very good. The side of crushed daikon makes it even better. Is it life changing? Not quite close but it will have you questioning why it hasn't been part of your life choices. I recommend Sekiya because they put out really delicious food. They are a true vanguard of traditional Local style Japanese Okazuya style dishes. Their bentos and noodles will keep you strong and grounded in your local ways and you'll be proud of your culture even if youre not Japanese. I'm coming back for the Loco Moco and Nishime. You can't outgrow Sekiya's food, you probably made choices in your life you regretted, when considering Sekiya was the only sound decision you've made you can trust. In any case if you're new come try this place. If you're an old wayward customer? Or like the prodigal son or daughter no worries... you're always welcome.

Quite a wait to be seated and to pay at counter. We came at 1:42 pm so not crowded. Older server had no smile or greeting and escorted us to a booth. Very glad our table server was pleasant and efficient. Not sure if it was hunger but my noodles tasted very old school and comforting. My malted shake was delicious but very small in size.I had wanted to go to Ben Franklin after but kanak attack, just wanted to head home, blast the AC and siesta.

It's been years since I came to Sekiya's Delicatessen!I was in the area, so a short walk to Sekiya's was meant to be!I looked at the offerings and read a sign about a BIG Bento! That sounded like it would have a little of everything good. At $9.55, it came with chow fun or fried noodles, tsukemono, namasu, ONE PIECE shoyu chicken. One small piece of Teriyaki meat, plain white rice musubi, one piece maki sushi, and a small 1/3 shoyu hot dog. You can add a drink for a dollar. Somewhat disappointed in the bento size. As you can see in the photos, it's not a Big Bento : ). I think I would rename it to Sekiya's Bento. I also ordered sides of the bean stir fry, a vegetable tempura and sweet potato tempura. Now the size of the take out for the sides is Big! Sadly, I thought I took a picture of the sides, but I forgot too. It came in a large size take out plate lunch container. The bean stir fry was amazing, flavorful and delicious! I will go back for more of this dish. The vegetable tempura was perfectly fried crisp, but a no go for me because it was mostly onions lol. The sweet potato tempura was nice and a bit oily. The bento was packed, however the portions are small. I thought it would be enough for both of us. Good thing I ordered the sides. Everything came out to just under $20. The restaurant is small and quaint. Sit down tables and chairs are with local decor. Overall, clean and a great place to pick up takeout or eat indoor!Service was pretty quick and with a smile. Support local. Overall good: 3.5/5 stars Ambiance: 3.5/5 starsPrice: 3.5/5 stars Rounded up to 4 stars due to the green bean stir fry!

If you're in Kaimuki and craving Saimin or Japanese food, this is a great place to go. Old-school vibes, and food is great! TBH they got a bit overwhelmed when more customers came through (there was only one server), but made up for it when things calmed down by being extra friendly, and accommodating. We had Saimin, wonton min, burgers, and bbq sticks--all delicious! Prices were great too!

Ok, an extra half Star for the nostalgia. Came here often as a child, and got food from the okazuya while at UH. They don't make it anymore (to my knowledge when I've stopped by over the last few years) but my fav was their fish patty. Anyway, we were in town running some last minute Christmas errands and finished early. I had been craving their marinated fried chicken so we stopped by to dine in about 10:20amRestaurant - 3 - it's old. Interior walls have been painted white so it looks decent. Bathrooms are outside. This is really a mom/pop kinda of atmosphere. Service - a mix of 3 and 4. Long wait to be seated. Okazuya Server didn't see us for quite a while she asked if we were dining in and when we said yes she called out to the back to let them know. No one came and eventually she said to sit anywhere. Hubby grabbed a couple of menus and we sat down. Then server came from the back and brought us menus, which we already had. Friendliest older lady even if she wasn't top notch as a server... She asked is we wanted water then disappeared for a while again before she came back with the water. She took our order and raved about my choice of the marinated fried chicken and said it was her favorite chicken. She was helping others and was just about to go to the kitchen to get our order when a gentleman (cook?) brought it out and handed it to our server.Long story short - food is a range of 2 - 4.5.Miso soup was good but too salty. Plenty of tofu. Pickled cabbage - meh. Very homemade tasting but not tasty. My mom made much better. Rice - good and fresh and plenty. Marinated chicken was da bomb! I think it's evolved from marinated fried chicken thighs a few years back to boneless and is no longer oily, and is crisp and yummy. Was great for the price. Hubby really liked his large saimin. It comes with four large wonton (yes he ordered the saimin), and the broth is old school Japanese broth. He even thought the noodles were tasty. Really wanted to pick up a couple of okazuya items (vegetable tempura is a favorite of mine) but didn't even finish my chicken so I passed. So food - 4.5 for the chicken and saimin, 3 for the miso soup, 2 for the pickled cabbage. Will come back every now and then but will have to choose carefully. Will probably try the vegetable tempura and a musubi as take out next time.Support local...but choose wisely. People that trickled in all seemed like regulars so they probably know what they like. There was a tourist looking family that were coming from their car as we were leaving. Hope they have a good experience.

Review based on 2 separate take-out experiences. The Maki roll is huge and delicious. Fried saimin tastes different from most places--this one was kind of sweet (their spin on the dish, I'm sure) and it's SO GOOD. I brought a few of these to a potluck and it was HIT. As for their okazu-ya, they're only in the morning until 2 or 3ish, so get there early. The hash tempura was yummy and I was also impressed with the fried rice! The shrimp tempura had a bit too much thick batter for my personal preference, but overall everything was good. Prices are reasonable and having their own parking lot is also a plus. I will be back to try more items in their okazu-ya selection.

Old school, and for a good reason!Sekiyas is a go-to for okazuya items and a trip back in time to when restaurants served up comfort foods, like udon, sailing, and oyako donburi. Think Wisteria...I had the katsu don oyako donburi and it reminded me of my Mom's cooking. The restaurant is clean and has your typical Formica diner decor. Service was excellent and courteous. The miso soup was a bit salty, but throw a big scoop of rice in there and you'll be fine.
