This park is for big kids. There are a couple young-children appropriate slides on the back side of this playground that my 3.5 yr old and 2 yr old were able to play on. But, the end of the slide is quite a way off the ground so it was a little difficult for the 3.5 yr old to hop off of. We had to carry the 2 yr old off. There are prickly weeds that grow around the back and sides. Since it's a sand playground, you can't see the loose prickly pieces and both my daughter and I got poked. It did look like a lot of fun for the other older kids and we'll probably try when my kids are a bit older so hopefully they'll do some landscaping on the weeds by then. We also saw a few kids spitting water in the sand and making spit-water sand balls. Gross.

Nice and big, however the bathrooms are absolutely disgusting!! If that aside, my kids loved this playground. There bed att be more playground da this big in Hawaii. I'm being very generous by giving 4 stars as this playground is in sore need of updates, but it still met the needs of my kids. And, WARNING, absolutely don't let your kids walk around barefoot because there are lots of pokies everywhere.. found another kid covered in them!

How did sand get in there? This is another one of those, I've been here before and I can't believe I never wrote a review. Located on the Hickam side of JBPHH, the park is situated on a corner next to the base swimming pool and across the Navy Lodge checkin. This is a larger playground on base when compared to Vickers Park. I know you read that review, right? A few differences between the parks are: Sand Park has well sand vice rubber floors on Vickers and Sand Park has a swing set for both kids and babies. Vickers has neither. As far as seating is concerned, Sand Park has more benches but a smaller restroom. In my opinion, the restroom is not very well keep as Vickers. Sand Park doesn't has as much grass area as Vickers if you want to hold a picnic but you can spread a couple of blankets around. Lastly a great place to take the kids for some exercise (or get them tired for nap time) and for everyone to get fresh air. Overall five stars. Great place to let the kids be kids. However when it rains or even a day after the rain stops, it does make for some tough walking in the sand. Now excuse me, time to put the phone down and enjoy the sun. M

I just went there two days ago with my almost a year old son and he absolutely loves it! It's pretty huge! So yes this is on Hickam base and you will need a military pass to get there or ride with a friend who have one! It's not in the shade however under the building there were some shades that kids can play there and it was kinda cool. There were many diversity of activities or obstacles there with different slides, bridges, tunnels, stairs, climbing, etc. Annnnnndddddd the swings are definitely in the shade of the trees! My son absolutely loves it! I wish we have more of these near my home There are bathroom right next to it! How awesome is that! I drove from Mililani just for this, yes to make my little one happy baby it's truly made me a happy mama

Long Story Short: Go, but only if you have military ID. Parents! If any of you hunting for an awesome gem playground amongst Hawaii's unusually monotonous offerings of playgrounds, you will be no doubt read the 5-Star reviews and start heading there straight away with kid in car seat. Well, is it Shangri-La? or a mirage? Simply put: If you do not have a military pass--it is indeed inaccessible to you. Do not try. As I did. You and your kid will end up having to retreat to Keehi Lagoon Beach Park and lick your wounds at the solid/adequate playground there.Yea, we did try to drive to Sand Park. And no amount of cuteness from our 2 year old could deter the rifle wielding guards from accessing their private playground! A foreign national would have had a lot easier time sneaking onto Mar-a-Lago while a president golfed there. The base guard, smartly, held on to my ID as we navigated the turn around to leave--and only gave my Civilian ID back to me once I was pointed in the right direction--back towards Nimitz underpass, where i had come from.I've heard from others this place is awesome. But be sure to go with one of our hard working military friends if you actually want to arrive there. :) And also, it may be an observation, but perhaps most of the playgrounds in Hawaii seem to be one of two pre-set versions of a playground. As if we got a bulk discount for buying Playground A, B, and nothing more. Perhaps the military bases had a different contractor--thus why they may have something new/different compared to the normal parks?

One of my favorite playgrounds on the island, but you need base access as this is located on Hickam Air Force Base. This playground has both sand to keep the kids busy digging and lots of different slides plus swings for both the baby kids and bigger kids. There are benches for the parents to sit and the lot right next to it can hold 12 cars. If that's full there is also a lot right across the street. I like this playground because you can play with the sand surrounding he playground without bringing them to the beach where your clothes and kids will get wet. The playground has a bathroom and had to kept clean and safe because it's on a military base, unlike the public parks which can be sketchy depending on the location in the island. My kids can literally spend an hour or two just playing here.

Great family park option to take my kids 1-13yo to eat lunch on the wknd when it's less crowded, play bball, ride scooter, push the stroller, playground play, etc. bathrooms in the gym and outside in the park are always clean. My kids have played in PAL bball, I9 soccer, and were in the swim club at the pool. It's up the road from Safeway and McDonald's also a subway so easy to grab food and enjoy outdooors at the park. Only con is it's super crowded weekdays w all the activities and sports going on esp the outdoor courts gets full and loud with pick up play by teens to young adults who blast explicit music. And then there's adults in the corner or the parking lot that congregate and consume alcohol but that's in the afternoon to evening hours.
