For anyone who wants to better understand a different culture, this museum is a fascinating glimpse of the African American cultural heritage in Hawai'i dating back more than 200 years. The delightful and loquacious founder Deloris will greet you with adorable enthusiasm as you wander by and read the posters, articles and clippings, and take photos with life-sized images of famous people like former U.S. President Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey. The tragedies faced by Black Americans of the present day become more poignant when reading about the men and women who shaped history. In Hawai'i, little did I realize that there exists a National Park Underground Railroad Network for Freedom at Washington Middle School! Also, the name Anthony Allen was one I knew little about until a visit to the museum opened my eyes. The former slave came to Hawai'i in 1810 and became a steward and confidante to King Kamehameha the Great. How cool is that? There's more to his story and you'll just have to visit the museum to learn the full details.Located at the corner of Piikoi and Kapiolani Blvd. on the second floor, the price of admission is free but donations are welcome. The parking lot fronting the building fills up but you could also park at Ala Moana and walk over. Check it out!
