I always wanted to hang a super nice wedding kimono in my living room. Ever since I saw one back home at this old restaurant, I thought it was hella cool. My mom is into fashions that show off the great designs that appear on a Japanese kimono and obi. So, it was really cool to finally visit Montsuki. A less well known local designer along the lines of Anne Namba (http://www.yelp.com/biz/anne-namba-designs-inc-honolulu ), the Yamasaki's have been custom designing kimono inspired clothing and accessories for years.I finally met Patty and she was very nice. Hearing all the stories from my mom and friend's mothers, I was interested to see what kind of stuff she had. Much of her clothing is quite elegant, I guess that's mainly a result of using kimono textiles as your base canvas. It's all very intricate and well made. She does quite a bit of custom work also seeing as she made a beautiful dress for my friend's mother. She sells everything from dresses, tops, jackets, purses, and if she doesn't have it, you can probably have her make one for you.Anyway, you've probably driven past this small boutique and not even known it. It's located right on Koko Head Avenue (close to the corner near Waialae Avenue). Go upstairs to a small hallway, you can actually see the sign from the street. Parking is in the metered lot behind.

I live part time in Benicia, CA but read the Star Advertiser daily. I saw an article about Montsuki and their jade sale and contacted them. I spoke to Patty and she was most gracious about sending pictures. Since I will be back in Hawaii in a couple of weeks. I told Patty that I will visit the store and look at the jades. Only on Hawaii will you get that kind of service and response to a request. I have a couple of tunics that I bought from the store and just love the flow of the garments. Thank you so much, Patty, and I will see you in a few weeks

I have rediscovered Montsuki on a recent trip back to Honolulu. They are in the same building on the inner parking lot side upstairs selling the same exquisite quality kimono inspired women's clothing and accessories. Patty Yamasaki is continuing the boutique since her mother and business partners passing. I've ordered a custom outfit and purchased necklaces with custom made to specifications earrings (earrings we collaborated via email and phone). Thank you Patty!

I walked into Montsuki's with my service dog, dressed in her vest. At first I did not see anybody, but after a few seconds I spotted a lady standing in the back of the store facing away. I said hello to her, and when she saw me she promptly said "No dog in store." As she was pushing me outside I told her it was a service dog, and she said "yeah i know, but my dog in back an' i no like it barking." This was where my disappointing experience ended. I never got to try her service, but i hope she amends her business practices to conform to the law. There is no wheelchair access anyway.

I was given about 30 vintage kimonos and obis. I called Montsuki to see if they were interested in the fabric. The person that answered said hello in a dull voice, rather than "Hello, Montsuki's" or something. I started to say that I had some vintage silk kimonos, and she cut me off with "not interested" and hung up. Very rude.
