After being away from SoCal for over a week, my husband and I were craving some Mexican food and weren't expecting to find many options. This place was recommended by my mom, who visited Honolulu over 10 years ago, and we didn't have high expectations but we wanted to give it a shot. Our server was so cheerful and welcoming and to our delight, the food was fantastic, even by Los Angeles standards! The rice, the rice, I am very picky about my rice at any Mexican restaurant and wow, their rice was surprisingly better than most I've had in LA.My husband loved his carnitas chimichanga (not common in LA), along with a shredded beef hard shell taco. He swapped the usual rice and beans for a bowl of red pork posole, which he thought was good. The salsa had a nice kick to it too!I played it safe with the shredded chicken green enchilada (green was said to be spicy, red mild) and a side of shredded beef taquitos, both were delicious! The enchilada had a good level of heat which is what I was looking for. I loved the cotija cheese on top, very authentic. If you're in Honolulu and craving Mexican food, I highly recommend this spot. We'll definitely be back when we visit the Island again!

Dinner in Honolulu, Hawaii...Our dinner group had already taken Father Rizal to have Korean, Chinese, Thai and Japanese cuisine...How about Mexican food next?Luckily, the group agreed and I suggested Los Chaparros Mexican Restaurant because I had never been there before. My dentist knew where to park (on Beretania Street) because the small, free lot in front of the restaurant was full. I called to make a reservation, but was unsuccessful. We went a little after opening time to beat the crowd and get a table. Service was cheerful and efficient. The interior was festive and had colorful decor. The atmosphere was energetic in a dimly lit environment.I got the Taco Supremo with shrimp... without jalapeños. It was still a bit spicy for me... and filling, so I took half home. The flour tortilla held up well, the veggies were fresh, and the shrimp were plump and firm! Yum!I'm glad that I finally got a chance to dine at this old school establishment! I'd go again! Thanks for the crunchy complimentary chips and salsa (with a kick)!

We went there the day before Valentine's Day and they were pretty busy the parking lot was pretty full and some of the other customers were parking on the street.Service was friendly and fast and very good also found out the server was also the owner.I had the combination plate of burritos & crispy taco plate which was very tasty and the taco was filled. The baked beans & rice also were delicious. My wife had the quesadillas plate which she enjoyed very much! She had the Midori margarita and enjoyed it, I had the Strawberry & Mango margaritas, which she was going to order, they both was very good and you could tasty they didn't hold back on the alcohol.Restroom was clean and with soap & hand towels and hot water.Parking is limited, but there is parking on the street and they mentioned after 6:00 pm you can park in the credit union parking lot.

tl;drParking is difficult, service wasn't as good as everyone seems to claim, food was just okay.Went here for the first time tonight for dinner, and was honestly disappointed considering all the glowing reviews.First off, the parking is very limited. But we were fortunate enough to get a stall. Otherwise you'll probably have to find parking on the street and walk. The service was a real swing and a miss here in my experience. My wife and I walked in, and we were seated at the same time as another couple. We noticed that the other couple was served their appetizers before we even got our water! Our server was friendly, but we felt like an afterthought. He never came to check on us, and our waters were left needing refills for the entirety of our meal.We ordered the jalapeno, artichoke dip and ceviche for appetizers. The "whole enchilada," and Chile Relleno with a small side of Menudo for entrees. The food was good, but we've had better Mexican elsewhere. Though I must say the Menudo was quite tasty.Overall, an okay experience. Not sure if we'll return here.

I really wanted to like this place but to be honest, it was just . . . meh. I'm originally from Southern California and I'm always craving Mexican food and I'm always trying to find a Mexican restaurant that's up-to-par here on O'ahu! Currently, I'm still on the hunt! I visited this place with a few friends on a Thursday right at 11am. We were seated right away and our server took our drink order and brought out complimentary chips and salsa. We started with nachos ($14) which you can order with shredded or ground beef, steak, chicken, or carnitas ($17). We chose to hold the meat and opted for just nachos - tortilla chips topped with beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, and drizzled with crema. The guac was brownish which tells me they could possibly make their guac one day and reuse it for another service day?! Either way it didn't look fresh and had no flavor! Bestie and I decided to share a strawberry blended margarita which we added a li hing mui rim (additional 25 cents). They split the beverage into two glasses; the drink felt on the smaller side. The margarita was ok ... there's definitely better margaritas on island! As for entrees we ordered two taco supremo's and the two enchilada's on their weekday lunch special menu. The taco supremo's pretty much three overfilled open faced tacos that come topped with sautéed bell peppers and onions, lettuce, cucumbers, shredded cheese and sour cream. You have the option of carnitas, chicken, steak, or veggies ($18) or shrimp of fish ($19). Side salsa and lime wedges are also included with the entree. I chose chicken with flour tortillas and my friends chose fish with corn tortillas. It's a lot of food for the price but again, lacking flavor. I mean it looks pretty! But, no real flavor. The salsa is definitely missing salt and as far as the chicken goes there doesn't seem to be any marinating of flavor here. Also, since we are topping the tortillas with such a lot of items be prepared to have soggy tortillas that are unable to be handled with your hands. You'll need a fork and knife to eat this dish. This establishment has literally 6 parking spaces so be mindful of that. Also, if you request additional 'complimentary chips and salsa' you will be charged, $5.25!There's better Mexican food on island!!

Favorite Mexican spot! Parking is limited but service and food are always excellent. Love to get their 3 item combo plates as you can get a little bit of everything. Portions are very generous I usually always have leftovers. Restaurant can get busy during dinner time so I recommend planning ahead or not being surprised by a wait.

Honolulu has lots of great food options but when it comes to Mexican cuisine it's a desert wasteland. Los Chaparros is a flavor oasis to seek out good Mexican grindz. I highly recommend the chile Colorado dish which has small pieces of cooked pork that melt in your mouth and it's covered in a umami tomato sauce punctuated with chiles and Mexican spices. It comes with rice, beans and choice of corn or flour tortillas. The tortillas are piping hot and fresh!I tried the 2 choice combo with fish tacos, chile relleno, salad and a side of beans. Everything was very tasty and I had tons of leftovers. The fish in the tacos tastes fresh, and has nice seasoning and is cooked perfectly. The Chile relleno has tons of cheese and a nice egg batter with a tasty red sauce that makes me want to eat like 5 of them!!! I also tried the Al pastor quesadillas in the 2 choice combo (the perfect match to any combo is to get the Chile relleno to pair with it). The quesadilla was a decent size and so packed with tender meat inside. The meat is not greasy at all which me and my heartburn appreciates.I know it sounds basic but their rice and beans are delicious. Lots of other restaurants mess this up and to me, it's all part of the meal. Their rice has good flavors and is perfectly cooked so it's fluffy but has a good chewy bite to it. The beans are tender and flavorful. The service is wonderful. AT is a fun and knowledgeable server/ also a chef there so he knows what's in each dish and had great recommendations for us. He's also very friendly and funny! They also have quite a selection at the bar and the drink prices are good IMO. Especially compared to Mexico restaurant in Kalihi which charges an arm and a leg for a drink. I love that they offer Mezcal margaritas and have a daily drink special. If you can deal with the lack of parking and occasional wait time, it's well worth it.

Mexican food is a hit or miss in Hawaii.... And I will say this is somewhere I would recommend if you are wanting Mexican food. The food was tasty and my favorite thing on my plate was the chile rellenos. I also had green sauce chicken enchilada with rice and beans. Service was good - server was nice and welcoming Parking is pretty bad but there is street parking too. Best bet is to Uber or Lyft. Restaurant was clean so was the restrooms. Overall I give it 4 Yelp stars! My fat cell was doing the happy dance for Mexican food! I will return to try more dishes!
