Okay, I have to preface my review with the fact that we brought our friend Athena and she can speak fluently. We call it the "Athena experience," so we never know what she's saying/ordering but it's always good.If I remember correctly we had a chow fun dish, spicy pork, chicken, beef, shrimp, and bunch of other stuff. The flavor and portions give this place a 5/5 stars. You also can't beat the price! This place is also great if you just want to order something for yourself. We went in as a group of almost 20 people. Two people ordered their lunch plate special and it came with a main and two sides. This way if you just wanna have something to yourself or you come in here for lunch, you're all set.Honestly, the food here deserves the attention and more customers. Why did I take a star off? Probably for the overall look of it. I don't usually dock a restaurant a whole star for the aesthetics, but honestly, this place looks closed from the outside looking in. It's pretty empty and that is due to the lack of people, but when the restaurant is half lit, it's two-thirds empty of physical tables, and someone isn't walking around, I can see why people just walk past this place. I would fill the front with tables and maybe clean up a bit. Make it look more welcoming or just have a light-up welcome/OPEN sign so people know it's open and accepting customers.10/10 would return, but only with my friend Athena.

We haven't been back here for so long and just wanted to pick up a quick take out. So we ordered the chicken vegetable and rice and it was pretty good. This is their mini daily special for a low price. Go check them out and enjoy. Emily's still there and alway so friendly.

I've been coming here for the past year, on my way home. Great spot for take out, especially if you need to grab groceries or something else in the shopping center. The pork chops, minute chicken, and pork with ong Choi are my favorites. It's not the best Chinese food, but not the worst also. The woman who works in the front always remembers me, which is another reason I like to patronize their establishment. They also have much better food than what's available in most of kaneohe.

Hubby, daughter and myself came here for dinner. Hubby ordered for us. I got beef broccoli with noodles underneath. The sauce tasted like gravy. It was actually pretty good. Just enough for my dinner. There wasn't too much beef but more broccoli. The noodles were hot underneath the gravy making the noodles soft. Not bad. Hubby said for 3 plates, it costs him around $22 which still isn't too bad. However they closed earlier than their time for their hours. We just made it right before closing. Hubby was the last customer to order and receive our orders. This location is take out only. There's plenty of parking right in front and across. I would definitely come back to try other items. Come early as the close a little before 8 pm.

I'm used to rude workers/owners when it comes to Chinese restaurants but the woman that runs this place is really nice. My kids usually get the salt and pepper pork chops and I tend to get the chicken chow mein cake noodles. The food is 6/10 but the affordable price and service are 10/10.

I was raised in Chinatown where my father, a first generation, was a chef by profession. It's fair to say that I have a sophisticated palate when it comes to Cantonese cuisine. There are restaurants that are more authentic and then, there are restaurants that have adjusted their food according to demographics. Liu's Chop Suey (LCS) is one of the latter.Located on the mauka side of Kamehameha Shopping Center next to Long's Drugs, LCS has been in business for almost 20 years (opened in 2002) serving local style Chinese food to the Kalihi area. It's a large restaurant that has the capacity to hold large banquet functions.Just by judging the food pics on social media, personally this is not my type of restaurant that I would bring my family to eat as the food has been adjusted where it doesn't appeal to me. However, recently some friends and I had a small gathering and wanted to bring food so we agreed to get their Menu A Set Menu. The food was pre-ordered and ready on the day of pick-up. I was impressed on how LCS packed the food and made it convenient for transport. Here is a summary of the food:Egg Blossom Soup (2/5) I was impressed the soup was still quite hot after picking up and transporting the food. It was edible but the broth lacked depth. I am not a fan of frozen peas and carrots - - for me, it really downgrades the dish. I added some freshly grounded black pepper to give it a kick.Oyster Sauce Chicken (1/5)Frozen chicken hindquarters were used and sadly it was executed poorly. The chicken clearly was precooked and deep-fried too long where the edges were overdone and semi-chewy like jerky. It was drenched with an oyster sauce that just couldn't save the dish. Disappointing.Sweet and Sour Spareribs (1/5)Visually, this dish was pale in color. Frozen spareribs were boiled and cooked until tender. The flavor was okay but the chef added way too much cornstarch slurry where the sauce coagulated. It was like scooping spareribs in jelly that was also not appetizing.Beef Broccoli (1/5)I appreciated the broccoli not overcooked (mushy and discolored broccoli is a huge turn off for me) and the beef was tender. However, over tenderized beef will lose the beef's flavor. Once again, this dish was heavy with the cornstarch slurry and the gravy also coagulated. Pools of jelly formed in the styrofoam box. Another disappointment.Salt and Pepper Shrimp (4.5/5)Hands down, this was the best dish in the set menu. Large head-on shrimp were deep-fried nicely and then sautéed with garlic and chilis. This clearly had MSG but that gave it the umami that I enjoy in salt and pepper entrees. The sizable protein was fried perfectly where you could eat the whole shrimp - the head and shells are a great source of calcium. I would come back just to order this.Gon Lo Mein (2/5)Thick egg noodles were stir fried with some veggies (cabbage, bean sprouts, onions and green onions) and topped with julienne char siu for a nice presentation. This was one of those dishes where it looked better than it tasted. I am used to eating Hong Kong style thin egg noodles and as a personal preference, I found these noodles too starchy.Steamed Fish (2/5)Frozen fish fillets were steamed and topped with a ginger/onion sauce. I appreciated LCS packed extra sauce in a separate container (too prevent it spilling during transport?). The flavor was okay but the fish was a tad bit overcooked. The texture was firm and lacked the silkiness of the fish fillet that I am accustomed to.The menu also came with a large styrofoam box of steamed rice which I didn't eat. LCS also provided wooden chopsticks and napkins. There's lots of parking at Kamehameha Shopping Center but at times can be congested as LCS has many popular business neighbors. Also, LCS boasts an incredible daily special of $5.25 + tax that has 28 (such an auspicious number in the Chinese culture) offerings.Overall, this Set A Menu is a great deal if you're feeding many mouths and looking for quantity. But as for quality, sadly this experience fell way short where I am not keen for a return visit any soon. Seems like LCS mass produces these dishes where it's cooked in large batches ahead of time and then reheated.2021 #70
