One of the many meth pipes that gets left by the resident homeless that police refuse to remove from the park.
night life at the park
Police refused to have homeless remove their sleeping mats from the park after many calls. So the community eventually did the job for them.

Lanakila District Park is located on the corner of N. School St. and Lanakila Ave. You can't miss it. There's a big baseball/softball field on the corner and the gym is located further up Lanakila Ave. They might have other activities in the area but I'm not too sure. They have a small parking lot located between the baseball field and the gym. Otherwise you can park on the street or across Lanakila Ave., there is a health center that you can park at on certain days that they're closed. I've been here a bunch of times either to play volleyball or basketball... mostly volleyball. I used to play in some tournaments on Sundays and weeknights over here and parking can get busy. Now I just go on Saturday afternoons to play in the open court with friends. It switches back and forth between here and Palolo Gym. PROS:Pros are that it's located in the middle between the eastside of the island and the westside. They also have padded flooring. The floor looks like wood but if you actually press down on the floor you can see that it gives in a little. They did this renovation a few years back. So if you fall down or go for a dive, hopefully your chances of getting back up in one piece is on the higher side. It's not super soft to the point where when you bounce a ball you can tell a difference. It's hardly noticeable. There's also quite a bit of parking. I've never had trouble with this even when it's super busy. CONS:This place can get really hot. I don't think it's well ventilated. It's also a small gym with one full court and two smaller courts running perpendicular across the full court and bleachers on one side of the gym. That's all the space you'll have. Maybe a few feet more on the perimeter. So it's a small gym which can make it stuffy and hot if they're a lot of people in there. Final Comments: This place is your typical district park gym but a bit on the smaller side. But the convenience of the location and the padded flooring is nothing to complain about. Bathrooms are okay. None the cleanest or the dirtiest.Overall Rating: "EXCELLENT" Great place with okay facilities. But still great nonetheless.

I played here for the basketball games back when I was a kid. Our team sucked for two years until our last year playing and we got second place. I'm giving it four stars because it's a good place for kids to stay active.

I work extremely close to this park, so sometimes, I would come here and just people watch and walk around the corridor of the park during lunch time and after work just to de stress myself especially after a difficult and challenging day at work. I often see kids playing softball / baseball here in the afternoons during the week, so there is some activity there and it's good to know that this place is being propertly losed. I'm not sure if the homeless population migrates here from time to time, but it's not in a range of possibilities here, especially at night. Within the vicinity of the park is the public housing buildings and the public housing administration, along with the Lanikila health center as well. The park normally is alot of fun to play and exercise, or just maybe you just need the open space to just take a fresh perspective on life. Like with anything, it's there when you need them - especially with the high pace that life tends to go. You can easily get here by car, of course, or like me, #B or #2 bus lines to get here. Parking wise, you're best bet would be just the street parking that is normally there. This is usually a residential zone, more or less, so you could get pretty good opportunities. Plenty of activities are abound in this park, where you can run the perimeter of the park - if you are a runner, or make use of the field to play softball or baseball. What keeps me coming back here is just the wide open spaces and the kids playing sports. I wish that was me when I was 7-8 years old, but those days are gone.Typical district park, but it is what it is. Wish the bathrooms were more cleaner though, but probably the aforementioned homeless population routinely come here anyway. Good park, if you just want to hang out or play with friends.B+

9.4.13.This place brings back a lot of childhood memories...that I would like to forget haha--jk but sometimes, really.Lanakila will always be a familiar place. Even now after returning to it for so many years the same guys run the facility...they even remember me despite the fact that I'm much older now haha.I have to admit, I do miss the old wood flooring. Although this new flooring is much less dirty!I remember there used to be a weight room, which I believe they still have. Unusual for a district park facility. Bathrooms are ok. A little dirty looking, but there are showers here & there's lots of room to change.I love how this park supports recreational leagues, local athletes & club sports--I know that even though this may not have been the place that holds the best of my memories, it will always been a familiar, somewhat nostalgic place for me.Yelp 365 Challenge: #246/365

It might be a slightly shady, kinda busy area, but really not too bad. The staff is very helpful! We had a church softball game scheduled here on a Saturday night and the field lights weren't going on. All I did was call the phone number connected with the park and someone answered right away and turned the lights on right away! Awesome!

I am scanning the pictures and comments about Lanakila, none of the descriptions fit. Of course not I remember Lanakila as it was back in 1941. The area consisted of two things, One was the park which had a baseball diamond near Lanakila Ave. and on the other side of the Avenue was a Military Camp complete with barbed wire fences, barracks and even the lower part of the park on the school street side were army warehouses. The area occupied by the Military Camp was the former home of the Territorial State Hospital, since moved to Kaneohe. In fact on December 7th 1941 my aunt and I were waking up School Street when the Japanese planes were either going away from Pearl Harbor toward Diamond Head, and some of them returning, starting their strafing of Fort Shafter and points beyond, back to Pearl Harbor. Lanakila to today's youth is a great place, and in my time Lanakila shared in serving the United States as a Territory. Oh by the way i played baseball, Football and participated in the summer fun programs there. i lived just catty corner across the street in wah was known then as the Borinquen Camp, 937 North School Street.
