This is a small place and if you get the bench it will be hard on the butt... they serve their food on to go boxes which is a good idea for those who don't finish their food and less to dishes to washed. The gyoza was good fried but it was like something you buy from a frozen package. Not home made. It was the happy hour for 5.00 for 5 pieces. The Okinawan fried noodles was good, I asked for extra veggies and that was 3.00 more for that see photos to see how much more veggies you get. Is it worth it? I don't know but I n fed more veggies. It did leave to wonder how much they give it without the request of extra plus they put it on a plate I think because they can't fill the to go box. The chicken karaage was good with the fresh squeezed lemon and sauce they give you.. rice was rice and the Mac salad was different yummy yum yum. They have plenty of parking entrance is on king free right next to the place.Fyi the sign is Chaya kotetsu if you're looking for it.

Having a craving for Okinawan cuisine and wanting to try someplace different, Yelp brought me to this eatery. Conveniently located on S.King Street with lots of parking and a casual atmosphere. Lunch partner and I found this place easily. While the menu is a little limited, it is well rounded. In the mood for ramen? Udon? Japanese plate lunch? Nice to see a handful of bento/teishoku available. Excited they had a few nice side dishes of menma, takoyaki, and more. Most entrees deep fried: kaki, sakana, croquette, chicken. Was hoping for bittermelon dish(es) but none to be found. That's OK. Can stir fry at home or go to "other" Okinawan eatery. Nice comfort food available like taco rice and Okinawan soba. A casual neighborhood Japanese snack shop.

Located next to La Pizza Rina on King Street. PARKINGTake the driveway right after you see Kotetsu Chaya. There are about 2 dozen or so stalls in the lot. There's also street parking on King Street although you may have to check time on the signs prior to parking your car. RESTAURANT It's a small hole in the wall place so it easy to miss if you're not paying attention. There are less than 10 tables so it can get crowded at times. The floors could be cleaner. I saw some food that was left on the floor from previous customers. Kitchen looked clean and the overall look of the dining area is okay. FOODThe food is amazing here. The fried calamari was an excellent choice. Lots of flavor and our party of killed it. Should've ordered more. The saba was nicely cooked. Macaroni could've been better though. The fried oyster was also ono! I think next time I come here I'll have to try the Hayashi rice. Seemed like a winner with customers.

My husband heard great things about this place and suggested it for dinner. They serve mostly Japanese dishes. I love the picture menus that they have posted in the restaurant. They have tables for dining in, but from what I observed it's more of a take out place. We ordered two plates. We got the chicken cutlet $15.50 and the kaki (oyster) fried bento $16.50. Both plates were excellent. The chicken cutlet came with tonkatsu sauce and the kaki came with tartar sauce. Both plates came with a huge scoop of rice, two pieces of takuan and macaroni salad. While the main entrees were delicious the macaroni salad was dry. Maybe that's the Japanese style, but it definitely needed more mayo. The cashier was really friendly. The food is made to order. We waited about 15 minutes for our plates.

Early dinner in Honolulu, Hawaii...After reading reviews by my friends Jo C., Bruddah Fran, Irene, Donna, and Lyla, I had to check this place out!Kotetsu Chaya is located on the right side of King Street, right after the Keeaumoku Street intersection. It's at the end of the strip building that houses other restaurants such as Sushi Sasabune and LA Pizza Rina.I didn't want to pay for street parking even though it ends at 6pm. We had reservations for 4:30pm, so paying for that 1.5 hours was not acceptable to me. I drove a bit further and found the entrance to the free parking lot behind the building... yippee! It was odd that the business left the front door to the cozy shop open. The fresh air brought in leaves, dust, and car exhaust from the outside and made the indoor temperature a bit warm. Hmmm...My friends ordered from the Happy Hour menu: takoyaki, gyoza, and French Fries. Gyoza was good, and the French Fries were surprisingly excellent!!!I got the Sutamina Bento - stir fried pork with garlic sauce. Wow! It was super tasty! The pork was sliced thin and had such a grilled, tender texture! The yummy macaroni salad had some Parmesan cheese on it - and no mayo! Yay!Service was very friendly and efficient. We had 2 pitchers of iced water on our table so we could help ourselves. My friend had to ask for the bill because soon, every seat was taken and they were busy!

My family enjoys getting together and trying new to us places. We especially love finding small family run spots and then spreading the word to our friends. Hmmm, it's almost as though we were destined to join Yelp!So when my brother sent us a link to a video review that focused on what was said to be the best Okinawan style chicken karaage (fried chicken) on Oahu, we knew that we had picked our next dinner location. We arrived as they opened at 4:30, having parked in the spacious lot behind the building. The five of us took up half of the seats inside, and we happily watched a stream of people come and go as they picked up the orders they'd called in. We knew that we wanted to try the chicken karaage and the ginger pork, and then we asked for a few things off of their daily happy hour menu as well. Soon afterwards our table was loaded with gyoza, menma (seasoned bamboo shoots) and our entrees. By the end of our meal we all agreed that we couldn't pick a favorite item, and there was nothing we wouldn't want to order again. That said,,, if I could only pick one thing to bring to the next pot luck it would be the chicken karaage. It was perfectly crispy and juicy with bough seasoning that it didn't need any of the dipping sauce that came along for the ride. You know a meal is good when you start planning to make the leftover's your lunch the next day. You know the meal is great when you admit to yourself that there won't be any leftovers, because it is simply not possible to leave those few final bites for later!

This is a small restaurant on King Street, but thet do have a parking lot in the back and if there is no parking there, then definitely street parking.Anyway, this is definitely your old school mom and pop shop as the food is cooked to order and some items can take longer than others. Overall, the food was delicious. What we ordered:1. CHICKEN KARAAGE PLATE - the batter is light and it was fried well as it wasn't too oily and was crispy throughout the meal. The batter alone doesn't have much flavor, but they provide a shoyu type of sauce which makes up for that. Personally, I enjoyed the Karaage this way because there was definitely more chicken than bathere. They also have different sizes for the plate. This dish was worth ordering an XL!!!2. OKINAWAN SOBA - the noodles were well cooked and the broth was delicious! I must say, they didn't skimp out on the toppings either. My MIL is from Okinawa, so if she said it was good, I believe her!3. HAYASHI RICE - this is a fairly simple dish, but the flavor is phenomenal! I would take this sauce and drench it over any meat! I aalmost feel like they should bottle this sauce and sell it on its own...it's THAT GOOD! I can't really explain what it tastes like. It's like the sauce for hamburger steak ramped up 1000%. So good!4. PORK GINGER BENTO - what seemed like it would be a simple dish, was surprisingly a favorite. The sauce cooked well into the pork and onions. The ginger flavor was the star and not just a past thought like in other dishes. the sauce coated the dish evenly and it was well enjoyed by everyone!5. MENTAIKO - the batter was delicious and the only comment I have on this is whishing there was more tako inside! But honestly, because the batter was so good. Kind of had a soft machine texture. It was very nice!6. SABA BENTO - not too salty, well cooked. This dish came last, but totally understandable as it needed to be cooked. This is one of those dishes, either you like Saba or you don't. I enjoyed it, especially the crispy skin.Definitely a place to visit again! We got here early, so there weren't many customers. They had a ton of take out orders though! I can see why people said service can be slow, but to me, the food is worth the wait. If you don't want to wait, come early, otherwise, having a little patience for good food wiwill go a long way :)

Parking in back, slow down look for driveway Friendly service even when they are busyWent because someone likes takoyaki. I tasted it...good.I'm not much of a fried food fan so I had only a few bites. Everyone was pleased.Next time I'll try the tonkotsu, that looked enticing. I just wasnt hungry enough, looks like a good size serving!
