This is a private school and you need to have Hawaiian blood to be a student here. If you get to the top of the campus you'll get a great view of the city. There's a guard station at the base of the school. You'll need a legit reason to get on to the campus or they won't let you up. This campus is massive. It's preschool through 12th grade. They even have dorms on campus. The campus is clean and beautiful. I wouldn't want to trek this place by foot as the roads curve up and down. Imagine the workout!

Varsity Boys' Basketball Game in Honolulu, Hawaii...Kamehameha School is an exclusive private school and I'm glad I got a chance to go on campus and watch an ILH (Interscholastic League of Honolulu) Championship Basketball Game. Last year, my alma mater (Maryknoll School) took the State Championship Title. I wasn't motivated to go to games last year. This year, my niece is on the Cheer Squad, so, I kind of wanted to see her in action, too!I drove up the long driveway to the Guard Shack and asked for directions to the gym. I was to turn left at the first intersection... everything else was a blur, except for "you can't miss it - go to the ground level after you park in the structure". Well, this building looked like a gym. I asked anyway, and a nice lady told me that the door would open at 6pm.I took a few photos, sat on a bench, and played a few games on my phone. A line started to form, and I realized that people were going inside even though it was 5:45pm! I got in line, paid my $6 admission fee, looked at the gal walking in next to me, and noticed that she looked familiar... it was my sister! LOL! Small world! She sat with her fellow coaches for the Cheer Team and I sat on the bleachers above, so I could watch after their belongings. Looking around the spacious, clean, well-lit gym, I spotted the ceiling fans and observed that there are no air conditioning units - just louvered windows that let in a cool cross breeze! The gym is elevated on a hill where the air is fresher! Ahhh!Overall, it was a satisfactory experience. One of the scoreboards was blinking off and on. The PA system was rather fuzzy - I couldn't understand the announcer - maybe he wasn't annunciating? Anyway, I know how to get to the gym if there's another special occasion!

This sprawling campus is meticulously maintained and the King's Spirit and great Mana can be felt throughout the halls of competition. The majestic view from the gymnasium is breathtaking by day and night.I feel blessed to have the privilege to officiate Hawaii Youth Wrestling here. While the competition is fierce among rival schools, the sportsmanship and deep rooted respect of character is reflected by all.Five meticulous stars for one of Hawaii's greatest academic and athletic schools to grace this iconic landmark. Mahalo to all the parents, staff and guardians of HAWAIIAN culture that have the privilege of earning a living working here and or supporting this program that keeps the memory and spirit of Kamehameha evolving like the Aloha spirit, that is unique to Hawaii.

My daughter just completed the Kamehameha Schools Exploration ( Ho'omaka'ika'i ) 2016 program, and it was a WONDERFUL experience for her. It was a week long program that included accommodations in the dormitory on campus, meals, field trips, 2 t-shirts, a backpack, a Hawaiian handbook and Hawaiian studies. During that week, the keiki had no contact from the ohana with the exception of a postcard that was sent home. The postcard was a nice touch. My daughter had LOTS of fun. She enjoyed meeting new friends, learning about her Hawaiian culture, going on field trips to a lo'i, fish pond, Royal Masoluem, Bishop Museum and to the beach to paddle a canoe. Other highlights were making an ipu, nose flute and a planter. Evening swims at the pool on campus was also one of my daughter's favorite. On the last day of explorations, the Ohana was invited to attend a Ho'ike presented by the keiki. It was an evening of celebration. Hawaiian songs, hula dancing, and a gallery walk (mini presentations of the keikis learning) were a part of the festivities. I was impressed when my daughter shared about her field trip to Punalu'u during the gallery walk. You go, girl! Mahalo nui loa to all the staff of Kamehameha Schools for giving my daughter the opportunity to learn about her Hawaiian ancestry. You were all wonderful and I appreciate all the hard work and dedication you put into this program. I'm so glad that I enrolled my daughter in Ho'omaka'ika'i 2016! Can't wait for her to attend next year's Ho'omaka'ika'i . Imua Maka'ala!

The top of the line entertainment and kids section for games and rides are superb. This school and the supporting ohana and faculty are an awesome team. Thank you for the experience!!

Hate coming here!!! Beautiful campus...sure. I recently came to my son's Ho'ike on June 15. Parking was horrendous!!!! First of all, they let us in the garage with attendants every where and yet they don't know how to count open stalls and only let that amount in????? Nooooo, they let several huge SUV's in and when you got to the top, the attendant left without a word and left us to turn around in that small space- unbelievable We got into the gym and it was packed but luckily we knew someone and had to sit with my son's back to me. When you look closer, there was lots of empty seats. People were filling up the ends and leaving huge spaces in between. If Kamehameha has been doing this for years, have they ever heard of ushers? Just someone to glance and move people over. My son said his experience was just okay. His leaders were lukewarm and seemed like they were going through the motions he's super articulate for a 10 year old. I guess this is it for our Kamehameha experience-connection

I raised my rating by 3 stars because my kids seemed to have flourished, and like it there.I am still a firm believer that how the kids oerform is really how PARENTS raised their kids from birth through age 12 anyway. It's mainly the math and reading that makes a difference. My daughter seem to have gotten one of the worst line of math teachers, but my son managed to make the best out of a different line, so who knows.I like the balance of manly men at Kamehmeha, there's too little said about the benefit of mighty guys staring quietly upon the teachers, the campus and the children. There's a magical sense of awe. But back to the math, all I can recommend for you future parents, if you noticed on the first day intro that your math teacher seems to not make sense to you as a parent, then try your best and do all you can to get them out of that math class. No doubt they have tons of money. So maybe after these old-timer and enthusiastic, and creative, boring, judgment home, and emotional math teachers leave, they will be replaced with brilliant ones. Other stuff:It takes forever to drive from the front gate to pick up the kids. It doesn't make sense for school to be in a hill, except that the staff enjoys the view. But otherwise the high school kids have to walk for miles every day to get to class stretched around the bend of a mountain. With so much money, I don't know why they close the back gate and recently put in speed bumps going uphill that will knock out your suspension, I'm glad my kids are leaving soon. The politics are very apparent and hush-hush. Whenever I asked the staff of the middle school and high school, I get no replies. And I even got one staff member to email me the fact that because of legal issues, she cannot reply. They seem to favor though opinons of the women parent, so as a dad I feel out numbered. But then again it seems to be the trend of all the United States anyway. The food is good, and it was included in the tuition, which is in retrospect wonderful. One last thing, my daughter applied to 10 colleges, and got into most of them, but the financial aid section that Kamehameha tries to spend to help students is more just informational on what sites to go. I think with all their resources, they should really go over simple things with SPECIFIC student: their nationality, GPA, their interests. And direct each Specific student to specific scholarships available or applicable. They say there's "thousands" of scholarships and funds available. Well, kids have no idea, parents have no idea, but these couselors and school department should know and apply them to each student.
