Founded by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, great-granddaughter and last royal descendant of Kamehameha the Great, Kamehameha Schools recently abolished its strict rule of only accepting students of Hawaiian descent and is now accepting applicants of other heritage. However, it still fulfills within what Princess Bernice's vision for her people and that was education -- the only force which could reverse the hopelessness of her people. In 1887, the Kamehameha School for Boys opened with thirty-seven students and four teachers. Pauahi's vision and her will ... today, more than 100 years after her death, it continues to guide and influence the actions of Kamehameha Schools. An inspiration and a wonderful institution to receive a great education.

My boyfriend graduated from this school.I went to a public school.Guess who spells better, has excellent grammar, and is able to write research papers without run-on sentences and proper punctuation?(It's not him.)Beautiful campus, stellar college-prep education, etc., but needs to provide more educational outreach to other kanaka maoli who don't test high enough, or interview well enough to get accepted for admission into the school.P.S. Bernice Pau'ahi Bishop Estate is the largest private property landowner in the state of Hawai'i and is the WORLD'S LARGEST CHARITABLE TRUST. Punahou and 'Iolani Schools can't even begin to fathom such wealth.

As a graduate, everyone knows that the thing you will miss most once you leave Kamehameha is the food. The "Aunties & Uncles" who work the dining facilities do an excellent job. As I was leaving the intermediate, heading up the hill to the H.S. level, I was very excited. French fries, pizza, hamburgers, main dish, salad bar, soda, milk, juices- adolescent heaven. Some of the main dishes that still show on my okole are: Shephards Pie, Chili Con Carne, Beef Broccoli, Kalua Pig and Cabbage and of course the monthly Hawaiian Plate. The best dessert was of course the Brownie, (you know which one, I no like start protests again), brown sugar and walnuts. Yummy! If you had two free periods, you could eat twice. Once you were in, no limit. Self serve! And oh yeah, the education was great. But it was the experience and friendships that made Kamehameha special. It is the gift that keeps on giving. I mua!

They have GREAT facilities. They have a unique perspective on what is important in education and culture. For instance, Kamehameha modifies it's schedule for MONTHS to accommodate "Song Contest" rehearsals. Music is an important part of Hawaiian heritage. However, the school, particularly the middle school, seems to only be interested in supporting certain genres of music.Let me note that Princess Pauahi never did set restrictions regarding what ethnicity applicants should be. My understanding is that there is a Hawaiian heritage PREFERENCE, (not rule) in regards to who is accepted into the school. Thanks to Princess Pauahi's husband's business sense, her estate has grown to enormous proportions. Unfortunately, with lots of money comes lots of buracracy and other problems. Read about it in the news because I can't write enough about it here...I think this is the best choice for students of Hawaiian decent because they can get the most for their money. Tuition is $3000 or less compared to the other major private schools' tuition of $12000+.Note: I think Hawaii's first ROTC program was at Kamehameha Schools. Interesting, considering that ROTC is an American military program. Kamehameha Schools does not observe certain Federal holidays in protest of the illegal acquirement of the Kingdom of Hawaii into the United States of America.

While there is much controversy about the school, you can't deny the excellent education and care given to the students and the general hospitality granted to all who visit. As a facility, the grounds are beautiful and functional. As a school there are many things it offers to those who will make the most of it.And yes, the delicious food doesn't hurt one bit.I miss lunch!

My alma mater, Kamehameha Schools will always be a place of memories for me and my friends. I've learned some academics over my 6-year residence, but even more about fitness, friendship, and the briskness of life.It seems like only yesterday that I was trying out for the Soccer and Football teams in middle school. I'm glad I got to experience this scenic and cultural phenomenon instead of graduating from a public school (which was my original plan). The all-you-can-eat lunches are the best, but I wish they would incorporate a breakfast option for Day Students instead of just the Boarders. The school is up-to-date electronically, having provided students with personal laptops during the academic year. They have a competitive video productions department in the Midkiff Library, where they host daily , campus-wide broadcasts for the high school.Imua, lol.

Way better than Maryknoll because the teachers are so much nicer. Maryknoll doesn't give you a proper education. Kamehameha does.
