This is a wonderful find in the manoa community. I previously was not used to this style of yoga however, Shelley has been really great to instruct and guide me step-by-step about the right way to get into the poses. She's really attentive and always correcting students which helps out a whole bunch. The yoga studio is clean And fully equipped with props

I've gone to a few yoga studios in Honolulu, and I must say Manoa Yoga definitely ranks up there with the best :)I walked-in to a beginner's 1 class taught by Shelley over the weekend. She was very personable from the moment we walked in, and continued to be so throughout class. I really liked that she would talk us through the poses, then after watching the class, would demonstrate the pose for us again, vocalizing what we needed to focus on. This is really the perfect way for a beginner to learn yoga. The studio is nice and breezy. It started raining during our class, which was actually was nice and peaceful to hear in the background. It seems the there are more older people at this studio, as compared to other places such as Yoga Hawaii.A comment about the Iyengar style - I would really recommend this style for beginners. The most obvious difference about this style is the use of props, which really is helping me ease into certain poses.

Disclaimer: I live in San Francisco, and I am on the board of IYISF.My wife's family is from Honolulu, and we go back at least twice a year. Whenever we are in Honolulu, we go to Ray and Shelley several times a week. Whether you are familiar with Iyengar Yoga or not, I hope you give this studio a try. Ray and Shelley are two of the most accomplished teachers I have had worldwide, and they are two of the nicest people you can meet--what better combination is there?I noticed a comment about classes not starting on time. It is definitely true, but I see lemonade in these lemons--life is too short, and as I wait to go into the studio, I look out at the hills and rainbow (which is there a lot of the time), and appreciate the ease and the pace. I hope you will too.

Overall, this is a very nice studio. True to Iyengar Yoga, classes are taught by some very passionate and knowledgeable instructors whom have great focus to detail and positioning. Although, a bit too parochial in their teaching style for my taste, the instructors were well meaning. (I was fearful at times I'd get my wrists smacked with a ruler for misalignment mistakes.) However, I do appreciate their efforts to accommodate my growing pregnant belly and I left feeling better than I had before class. My only gibe (and why they get 3 stars instead of 4) is that that classes chronically start and end later than scheduled times. Now, while I am all about getting more yoga for my buck, it got a little annoying when classes would start AND end as late as 15-30 minutes beyond printed times. Thus be prepared to wait...and be late. Namaste.

Not impressed with intermediate class by Ray. I liked Dennis' Senior Stretch and Michael's intermediate class. But Ray had a negative attitude and we didn't do enough to warm up for some of the asanas, so I pulled a muscle to the right of my thoracic spine. Pranayama was not even mentioned.Least yoga-like instruction I've had in 10+ years of taking yoga with a concentration on Iyengar and Power yoga. I won't be back!
