This is perhaps a best kept secret among military hotels and guest houses. When the Hale Koa is all booked up, no one thinks about lodging at the Army Hospital! It's not actually IN the hospital, but less than a mile up the hill from it.We were skeptical, but friendly staff, price, convenience and quality changed our mind. The abundant and free parking, free hot breakfast, free laundry room and magnificant view of Honolulu all the way to Pearl City also influenced our fondness for this hotel. We've been to Waikiki many times, so we really don't need to be right there at the beach. The Hale Koa is great for that! But we don't need that anymore. We just need a quiet clean place from which to visit family and explore the island. My wife is from Honolulu. Amazing she never ventured more than a few miles from her home in the big city! But the IHG Army Hotel on Tripler Army Medical Center offers a quiet, seriously toned down alernative. The location is really central to both the West and East sides of the island and allowed us to venture into some non-touristy dining spots in Kalihi. The NEX is not far away (good for cheap gas and some seriously good poke at a good price from the commissary!) and if you happen to be hanging around the hotel during the week, during business hours, you can go to the hospital for the food court, DFAC (I hear good lunches for cheap - like $5-$8 cheap - but you know it's Army Mess Hall chow), Subway and Shopette.Although the hotel does not have a gym or pool... you're on a military post! And if you're at the IHG Army hotel, you obviously have base access and are authorized to use the gym and pool on base which is not far away at all. Just go down the hill toward the hospital and hang a right at the stop sign. Go past the traffic light at the parking deck and hang another right at th banyon tree (you'll know that tree!) and the gym/pool are on your right! The rooms were big. clean and family friendly. Another perk is security. Honolulu and a lot of the urban areas have gotten a bit sketchy since California and the liberal West Coast states (sometimes even cities like NYC and Chicago) started exporting their homeless populations with offers of free plane tickets anywhere. Honolulu has been battling homeless tent cities on their sidewalks for decades! You're on a military post guarded by armed soldiers. So you chances of assault and getting your car broken into are greatly reduced!I've seen past reviews that were not so kind, but it appears they had a renovation a few years ago and everything is great now!VIDEO:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcSMPK5ctyM

I really enjoyed my stay at IHG, with my family. As other reviewers have mentioned the building is old, that said it's kind of a commodity to the historian who might appreciate that the building is original from WWII. The hotel was very clean and presentable. There is limited trash receptacles available. One very tiny trash in the room, one in the computer area, and in the kitchen/reception desk area. Between stays, they replaced the mirror with something more "modern", but less practical (no more medicine cabinet). Though it was pretty. The mirror that hangs on the bedroom door to the bathroom however seems to be original and very beautiful. Out on the lanai, there is a scenic view of the city overlooking the ocean. Lots of trees down below with the grass and plants nicely manicured. A plumeria tree down below gives off a beautiful aroma, and a hill with the perfect tree to read under. Lots of seating in the courtyard. I slept very comfortably. There is a/c. The fridge fit our pizza box, laying flat. They gave us each a free water when we arrived. Free breakfast is also great. We stayed a while and I have no complaints. I really liked the omelettes. They also had computers with printers available. The workers here were absolute sweethearts. I apologize in advance if I misspell anybody's names.. Christina at the front desk really made me feel at home, and Aloha was also very helpful. Ilene does a great job in the kitchen. Everything was very good and clean. These three Ladies made it such a pleasant experience with their positive attitudes. A washer and dryer is available for use on both floors. They sell laundry detergent and bounce. This area was also clean. Lots of exits/entry points. We got to watch a helicopter land on the property which was pretty cool.We personally found this place to be far less expensive then many of the other hotels. The only downside is that there isn't a lot to do on the base and it is semi far from the areas I wanted to be. It wasn't loud during our stay and I never heard a single rooster.

I'm on week three here... with yet another 3 in my future until our stuff gets delivered... the good... the rooms are clean... the people are nice... you can walk to a small PX/ Post office/Starbucks/ subway/ beauty salon/etc that is all located in the hospital Oceanside. Beautiful views of the city/airport all the way to pearlcity almost... if you have a room on the ocean side... also extremely peaceful and a short drive to either side of the island. If you're staying in the area the schools are fantastic and it is the ONLY reason why I chose to stay here... The bad? Service level is spotty, front desk has a hard time even printing out a receipt or having the correct charges. Their continental breakfast is a joke but when they do have it don't miss the fruit. Their free get together dinners on Wednesday are luke warm... I would skip if it wasn't bc I'm on a budget here ha ha! They have exactly Two amenities if you can call them that. They offer two computers w a printer in the seating area (their "business center") and you can request to use the grill. That is all. Now they will tell you they also offer free games and dvds... yeah ok... my 14/15 yr old would disagree. No gym... no pool...small and I mean dorm room size fridge... so can't keep anything there... you will get hotel room fever rather quick here. We sure are. The pics on their site are accurate.

Stayed at the IHG Army Hotel at Tripler Army Medical Center during a TDY. It has all the benefits the other reviewer described. All they did is slap the IHG brand on the old VOQ/VEQ. This is my 4th IHG Army Hotel I've stayed in, and it was the worst. While the rooms are big, it is the old "two rooms that share a bathroom". They don't divide the rooms anymore, but the bathroom design is such that you cannot leave the doors open when you manuever from one room to the other. Outlets- there are only two outlets in each room, and most of them are occupied by hotel-provided equipment. Oh, they also have only old two-prong. No outlet nearby the table in the living room. I was able to use an available outlet off of an extension strip (that had the ground cut off) to recharge my laptop, and the GFCI outlet in the bathroom to charge up the majority of my electronics. The mini-fridge is the old under the desk top type that's very small. A couple of days worth of food will max it out. The air-conditioners are controlled by separate thermostats in each room, and they were not even close to matching the temperature. One of them leaked, not a good thing when the condensation drops were dropping near the outlet. To their credit, when called Maintenance fixed that issue quickly. Only one lamp in each room, nights were very dark in the rooms! Tax. Even though IHG advertises when booking, "Official Travel Tax Exempt. Must show orders when checking in", you are told "we're sorry, we're an individual franchisee and have to charge you hotel/excise tax." Oh thanks! How do I explain that to my DTS reviewer/approver?Last issue is that my IHG points/miles were never posted automatically. Had to file a missing stay (which was processed pretty fast) to get the points.I give the impression that I hated my stay and it was hellish. Truth to be told, being only a couple of miles away from the duty location, gorgeous views, full amenities, and just plain being in Hawaii made most of these issues very manini (small). Just some helpful advice for any future traveller! I do wish I get authorization for commercial quarters in Waikiki next time!

First time here. It isn't too bad. It is small and the room I had was kind of weird. The bathroom has two doors. It is in the middle of the living room and the bedroom. The carpet looks old and the pull out sofa bed is not good at all... but it works. The fridge and the microwave oven is a big plus.

This hotel was decent for a solo traveler on a government-sponsored TDY. The bed was comfortable, the hotel offered free breakfast and laundry, and the room had a microwave/fridge so I had everything I needed for a relaxing extended stay. The hotel is definitely dated and the bathrooms are in need of an upgrade. I never had trouble with noise from neighboring rooms but the roosters outside will wake you at 5 a.m. every day. I had a great experience with the housekeeping staff who are incredibly kind and will go out of their way to make you feel at home. The hotel is not within walking distance of anywhere except Tripler Army Medical Center, so I would recommend staying elsewhere if you're traveling for a vacation or with family. You will find hotels in Waikiki for a similar price so don't stay here just to save money.

Clean and spacious rooms. We spent one week this trip and Tripler is centrally located to all the popular tourist destinations. Each room has a microwave and large refrigerator. The Exchange/commissary is on Joint Base Pearl Harbor which is five to six miles from here. I would have given them five stars if they had a full breakfast. Hotel is a little dated, but in great condition. I totally recommend!!

The GPS directions on Yelp are wrong. The hotel is located behind Tripler Army Medical Center. The hotel room we stayed in looked very old, and rusted. Only stay here if you have no other choice. Room design is weird, with rest room in between bedroom and living space. Not worth what is charged, but hey it's hawaii and every place feels justified to have high rates.

Not the top of the line if that's what you're looking for but the price was decent as well as availability. After my long flight from the East Coast, and with a screwed up reservation else where, the staff welcomed me and assisted in arrangements which relieved a lot of stress and anxiety.

This hotel was a nightmare. The building needs to be condemned and destroyed. There is no elevator and I was on the second floor which made dragging luggage upstairs a chore. The carpets must be from the 70's because I don't remember ever seeing anything like this. The mold is in the rooms, air conditioning, and I could literally smell it on the pillows. The maids gave me one bottle of shampoo and one bar of soap for the entire week. I requested more at the front desk after a week of putting up with missing towels and odd things I noticed missing. The front desk said they could fix it tomorrow. I said I'm checking out tomorrow and she said she would send an email to her boss. The bed was not made at all on the last day of my stay. I had a bottle of water I was keeping cold in the mini fridge, and when I came back the bottle was suddenly warm. I checked the plug thinking maybe someone unintentionally unplugged the fridge with the vacuum. This was not the case. I looked at the settings inside the fridge and the maid went out of her way to turn it off. I turned it back on. Not sure why, it wasn't loud or anything, and it was definitely on the day prior. I have encountered strange things with hotels but this ranks up there with the most ridiculous. Unfortunately the majority of negative issues are found on base with the contracted help. Unless you are into playing passive aggressive games with the maids and getting things stolen, I would avoid tripler ihg.
