Jan has an outstanding knowledge of human anatomy and functionality. If you're in SERIOUS pain, you definitely need to see this guy! I've had multiple surgeries resulting in much internal scar tissue, causing an asymmetrical walking motion and very serious daily pain. Over the last six months with regular visits to Jan, I've regained more flexibility and strength than I ever thought possible...and am still improving. My goal is to return to surfing the North Shore and canoe surfing with family and friends. It's a long, often painful process but the payoff is more than worth it. Mahalo nui to Jan!

I was compelled to make an appointment with Jan because clients of mine have been raving about his skillsets. I am a Massage Therapist and Acupuncturist, so my work is very physical and I have pains and aches like most people. The best thing I got from only 1 session was knowledge of how to actively engage my transverse abdominis! I had to be taught how to truly breath from my diaphragm to support and mobilize my thoracic spine, which would take pressure of joints and muscles that have been working incorrectly. I truly appreciate Jan taking the time to take pictures and video to break down the imbalances of posture and movement.So gotta do my (exercises) homework to retrain my muscles and central nervous system Mahalo Jan for all the pointers! My lower back would be sore from time to time. And always sore when I laid on my stomach. Jan helped me with my standing posture and it really helped. I think everyone's body is somewhat "broken" and he's the fix we need. Now I can't stop looking at everyone's gait and running posture.

Jan is a true master of his craft! He is a highly effective personal trainer. He listens, he explains, he is patient, and above all... he knows what he is doing! I came to Jan with a chronic Achilles issue that I have tried every traditional means to treat for almost 5 years now; physical therapy, massage, orthotics, etc... nothing helped. I found Functional Patterns but it was a lot to take in and understand, when I found that Jan was a certified FP trainer and he was on island, i was ecstatic!As soon as we started talking through my issues, he helped talk me through what my body should and shouldn't be doing and what could be causing my pain. Then he took the time to explain the correct exercises and their purpose. If it makes sense, it tends to stick with me more.I've only been going to Jan for about 5-6 sessions and I can already feel a huge relief and I am progressing towards running again and most importantly... pain free!I still have a lot of things to address but I'm more than willing to take that journey with Jan. What he will teach you and put you through is like nothing you have ever been through before. But it is worth it. Your brain will get a workout from all the new moves, positions, muscle engagement, breathing, it will be strange at first but quickly you will see the purpose and get those results.If you are looking for someone to help you move better, feel better, and ultimately add quality years to your life... Jan is the your guy. Can't say enough good things!!!

After many years of weightlifting and yoga my body was getting too easily injured. I knew I needed to change something. A chance run in with my friend on the freeway connected me to Jan. He's exactly what I needed. I've always paid attention to my posture, but I wasn't correcting it properly. I was waking up to back pain. After just one week with Jan he had me doing my posture more correct and I was waking up without back pain. It's not 100%, but it went from waking up not wanting to move after walking around awhile to no problem. He showed me a new way to train that has my body working together as a unit vs. isolation of muscles. Right on Jan. My job demands I be in shape and perform. His training is right up that alley.

I started training with Jan not knowing that my body had any dysfunctions. Not that I felt like I was in amazing shape or anything, but mainly my body felt fine. After a few sessions all of the activities that I do, surf, golf, walk became easier and more comfortable, and I became better at them. I realized that my body had adapted to feeling fine by compensating for dysfunctions. I still have a long way to go but man I have made some serious improvements. I can't recommend Hi-Function enough both for its concepts and for Jan. My body has never felt better. My wife also thanks him for both my better posture and extra definition in my posterior.

I am so happy to have found Jan and the work he does. I've struggled most of my life with slouched shoulders and hip discomfort due to scoliosis. I've tried many methods to help correct my posture including rolfing and chiropractic and nothing has helped my posture to stay in alignment the way I've experienced in my 10 sessions with Jan. I now have tools and exercises to keep my body aligned and feeling limber. Jan is a skilled trainer and I highly recommend him to anyone with chronic pain. He does a thorough consult where he analyzes where your body is needing to be strengthened in order to relieve dysfunctions. Each session is tailored to bringing your body back into proper alignment. I am so grateful to Jan for helping me eliminate lower back pain and pain in my right knee. I had been dealing with these issues for as long as I can remember. Jan uses techniques that I have never seen anywhere else for correcting bad posture and reinforcing natural movements. All of the pain I had been experiencing was due to my own bad tendencies and fixing basic movements helped me way more than I had expected. I can now go for a run without any knee pain and go surfing without any lower back pain. Can't thank Jan enough. Very highly recommended!
