The egg custard was really good the best I had so far on the island but the wifey cookie was thin and I wouldn't recommend it. Nice owners I would support them and try the other stuff they sell next time.

While not a huge selection, what Hannah's Bakery does carry is good. The coconut raisin bread is delish! It stayed fresh for 3 days without refrigeration (of course). The pineapple cream buns are my go-to walk-about snack. Next time I am trying the cocktail buns (pineapple, coconut and mango- I think- inside)! Good prices and friendly service. Right at Bus Stop 2 , so you won't miss it.

After recently traveling to NorCal, I developed a craving for authentic Cantonese food. The Cantonese food scene in Honolulu isn't decent but with limited choices. I had some great dan tat (custard tarts) in Oakland where I found myself with a recent craving since coming back home. During my weekly weekend visits to Chinatown, I was on my way back to my car walking on N Hotel St with bittermelon in my hands, I saw some decent looking sized dan tat at Hannah's Bakery (HB). This location has gone through multiple ownerships with name changes, I cannot keep up. I decided to take a chance by picking up some and was advised by the staff she'd put them in a box if I purchased 8. Sold. They were carefully packed and asked for a receipt for reimbursement. One of the perks at my part time job. It traveled to Kaneohe where my colleagues looked at them with anticipation. THE VERDICT:Indeed they were of decent size and baked fresh. I immediately noticed a minimal sweetness in the custard. The crust was somewhat like a pie crust but it wasn't flaky as I was hoping for. My colleagues mentioned the good size but didn't say anything about its flavor. It was okay but not earth shattering. I decided to bring dan tat to my sister's home for dinner one night and preordered them. They were packed nicely again for easy transport. My sister reheated them so the crust turned darker with great anticipation of eating them hot. However, this time the custard lacked any sweetness and the bottom crust was not fully cooked. Disappointed. The next weekend I was in Chinatown again and passed by HB and saw the dan tat. I took another chance but only got 4 this time. I took it back to my part time job and it was delicious. Inconsistent. Hmmm......I once again purchased dan tat and took them to my sister's and this time it was better but sister and niece commented a strong baking soda taste in the crust. Overall, mixed feelings on the dan tat from HB. Decent dan tats are not easily found unless you go to a dim sum restaurant. I did see a whole bunch of savory and sweet baked goods at HB but I haven't taken that plunge yet to sample other offerings.

Happen to be in Chinatown and finding this bakery was a must. We always enjoy the ham & cheese buns from here... someone always brings a box to pot lucks. Bakery is located in between the vegetable shops along Hotel Street (although official address is Maunakea St.). Handful of items to choose from... and reasonably priced ($2-something each). Will return.

Have only tried 2 things from here- their standard egg tart and their pineapple custard bun. The egg tart was just OK- the custard was well set, not too sweet, and a little bland; the pastry could have been much more buttery/flaky. The pineapple custard bun was fresh baked out of the oven and was perfect. Crunchy buttery topping, soft pillowy bread, stuffed with lots of not-too-sweet custard. Will return for the pineapple custard bun and to try more items!

Small bakery located in Chinatown. They accept card now but it's a $5 minimum. Since I didn't have any cash on me, I got 2 char sui pork buns. I noticed that it's slightly bigger than another bakery nearby in Chinatown. It wasn't my fave. The pork didn't have the red color dye and sweet flavor I'm used to. I would rather try their egg tarts next time.

Grace lives up to her name :)Behind her mask, I could "see" her genuine smile as she welcomed me into her shop. It isn't crowded or noisy at 6:30 a.m. so she excitedly reminded me that everything is still warm out of the oven.It was early and I wanted something to snack on before I started my shopping adventure. I feel better about having pastry if I know I'll be walking it off LOLEverything looked good and it made me curious which items were local favorites. She said the Hong Kong Cocktail buns and I should have known better because Popo used to always buy those! She also said Japanese tourists come for her bun with red bean like an pan; and the locals like the bun with hot dog centers. The custard tarts weren't ready yet but I did find a couple things to enjoy (now and later!)Grace sure did start my day off right, with her warm aloha spirit and delicious pastry. She said that a number of customers are there at 5:30 a.m. to purchase items for breakfast, lunch for later, or like me...a morning snack to kick start my day.And did you know they've been around for 35 years! Unless I heard her wrong? Now I know why my grandma liked shopping here! Thank you Grace :)

This little gem was fabulous! I ordered a coconut cream bun which was soft and delicious. The coconut cream was sweet and buttery and complimented the bread without overpowering it. I ordered the coconut peanut butter mochi and loved it! They were 3 for $2.49, so a good value. The last item was a walnut red bean pastry. This was my favorite! The dough was flaky and flavorful and the red bean and walnut mixture had the perfect amount of sweetness. The woman working was very nice and friendly and welcomed us even though we were neither local or Chinese. Tips: This was a cash only business, so keep that in mind.

Came here with a friend who wanted to buy plants in Mauna Kea Marketplace. Bakeries abound around here and I wandered into this one, perhaps one of the only ones I've never been to, behind one of the perennially crowded bus stops. It's a cute, tiny store with pastries surrounding you when you walk in. I decided to get the Hong Kong Cocktail bun and char siu manapua. About $2 each for sizable pastry, standard price if not on the cheaper side. They were both put in a plastic bag and I wandered off to the fenced off tables of the maunakea marketplace square (confucius/guanyin square?) to eat.The manapua wasn't my favorite. The bun was nicely sweet and chewy, but, first, it was kind of destroyed when I peeled off the paper, and the charsiu inside wasn't really flavorful, vaguely sweet with a kind of metallic aftertaste. I love char hung sut's super meaty filling and this was pretty different--a matter of preference though, I guess. The cocktail bun--the characters for which are literally cock tail--was tasty though. I've never had one and I wasn't sure what to expect. It had a shiny exterior with what looked like some butter on the outside. It had a similarly sweet and chewy bun, maybe more fluffy, than the manapua, and also a sweet coconut filling. I'm not a huge coconut fan, but this had a subdued taste, almost more like vanilla than coconut. The texture was in between koshi an and the sugar butter mix on the outside of ensaymada. Very tasty and perfect for an afternoon snack at work.

Pastries are still on point and the service is still great with the lady that's handling the front. It gets a little hot in here when there's a crowd but it's OK cause after you leave you can go through MaunaKea Market to order a boba drink which is refreshing. Hotdog buns, ham and cheese, custard tart and raisin bread is yummy. Until next time Hannah's Bakery when I'm in Chinatown.
