Hana Sushi is located right along Keahole St. in Hawaii Kai Shopping Center. Opposite the side with McDonald's. I walked into have lunch by myself and was greeted right away. I waited a bit by the door, awkwardly looking at the menu because I didn't know it was seat yourself. Most places in town are not seat yourself XD This place is seat yourself though.I was given a bottle of water when I sat down. This is how they serve their water, no cups. Chopsticks, napkins, shoyu and hand sanitizer are self serve on the table. The servers were a few younger guys. There were a few tables. Initially with my first sushi roll I wasn't offered any wasabi or pickled ginger. Service got better after a table left. Later on after I got my second sushi roll, I was offered wasabi or pickled ginger, but by then I declined.I knew from looking at the Yelp pictures earlier that I wanted to try the 'Lava Flow Roll' (8 pieces): California roll topped with spicy ahi and green onion. This was super super delicious. And I totally recommend it. You can taste the freshness in the spicy ahi on top and they give a generous portion. I also sampled the 'Ika Geso Karaage/ deep fried Squid legs.' This was freshly fried. Hot and steamy, which I appreciated. Though some parts where slightly raw. I decided to chance it anyway because tentacles are my favorites. And then I debated on ordering another roll. I decided to go for the 'Sunset Roll' (8 pieces): shrimp tempura, cucumber + on top: spicy ahi, crab mayo, crispy tempura flakes. It sounded really good when I looked at the menu... but I'd say you should pass on this one. The shrimp tempura inside isn't freshly fried and by the time it makes its way into the roll, its pretty soggy and sad :( The toppings on top are interesting but they aren't the same volume as on the Lava Flow. I really should've just gotten another Lava Flow *face palm*.

I never even knew this shopping center existed here. Haha. I will drive far to go to Hawaii Kai's Costco but I never driven past it. So when my good friend texted me out of the blue asking if I was coming to her side of town any day soon. I was like, I'm at your Costco rn. Talk about perfect timing. She was craving udon and mentioned this place. As I Google mapped the location, I was surprised to see it was literally right down the street. Hana sushi is on the corner off of Keahole street near the Safeway. Lots of parking in the private lot, including right in front of the restaurant. It's a quite small eatery with a couple of booth tables, a few small tables and a sushi bar with about 4 seats. We were greeted by the hostess who sat us at a booth. To my surprise, she served us bottled water. Menu has a good variety of sushi, udon, tenpura and apps. My friend got her udon w/tenpura along with an order of crab mayo. I decided to try their spicy tuna bowl. Food came out quickly. My spicy tuna bowl comes with lightly seasoned rice, crunchy tenpura bits and spicy tuna of course. Now, it's not the local style spicy tuna poke. It's the Asian style of negi tuna with some "spicy" sauce. To me, it wasn't spicy at all though. Fish isn't the best quality but it was good. My friends udon and tenpura hit the spot for her. Steaming hot and the batter was light and crispy. All in all it was a good meal. Fast service, clean atmosphere and solid Japanese options for diners to enjoy.

Lovely little place. Fresh fish, good portions, fair prices. It's only of the only places I'll actually order sushi as takeout from a restaurant sometimes because it's close to home.

For some reason it's hard to find good, authentic Japanese food in Hawaii Kai. I always have to go into town to get it. There's definitely a restaurant opportunity for someone! I've driven past Hana Sushi a million times since it's in the Hawaii Kai shopping center which is near my residence. Plenty of parking is available in the shared lot. They're right next door to a liquor store and close to Safeway.I was craving sushi and I wasn't too hungry, so I just ordered their salmon skin roll to go. Big mistake. I'm not even sure that there was any salmon skin in the roll! I think there was a little bit of salmon, but the rest was filled with cucumbers, masago and radish sprouts. Five little pieces for $10.I can't comment on the service since I ordered my sushi roll to go, but the inside seemed clean and spacious with a nice sushi bar set up. In addition to sushi, they offer various rice bowls such as chirashi, poke, tonkatsu, etc. They also have fried foods like tempura, gyoza, etc.Perhaps I'd return in the future to try other dishes, but I don't think I'd order sushi from there again.

This small sushi place in the Safeway shopping strip mall in Hawaii Kai was a surprise. It was empty, one table left just as we came in and it was just us. Service was a little slow but adequate. Not sure if it were more crowded how they would handle it. We ordered the Zaru Soba Tempura set, the Udon soup with Tempura and the sushi combo B set. The tempura was crunchy and batter was not too thick. They give only 2 pieces of shrimp with fried vegetables. The sushi was fresh and tasty but a little pricey at $36 but pieces were good. My favorite was the toro. This is a convenient place since it is right by Safeway and Long's.

Thank you Smee W. for your review and reminding me that this sushi place was still here :)We used to dine here prior to the pandemic. Pleased to see they follow protocols with checking our vaccination card and ID's, taking our temperature, and seating us at a socially distant booth from other patrons.Starting with the agedashi tofu, this was hot and fresh. Loved the crunchy coating and the tofu was spot on. Sincerely appreciate the dipping sauce on the side to keep the edges crunchy. We had the Hamachi roll and the sushi platter. Everything was perfect, fish was fresh fresh. No complaints at all. Thank you also for the hot matcha tea! Love all the free parking out front too :)Great food, awesome service, and the place is clean. Will certainly return!

Very generous portions for shrimp & vegetable tempura entree. Pork tonkatsu bowl nothing special. Decent portion but a little dry & not tender. Guess I have been spoiled by other tonkatsu places in town.
