H&R Nurseries, located on a back road in Wainmanalo, specializes in unique hybrids - not clones or the mass produced orchids that you find at your super market from Thailand or Taiwan. This is their niche which has allowed them to successfully survive against foreign, lower cost producers. Sadly, the nursery has condensed in size but is very organized and well kept. This makes it easier to control for pests and therefore agriculturally approved for shipping to the mainland or elsewhere.Harry and Roy have a variety of hybridized dendrobiums and cattleyas, thus if you're a connoisseur or just looking for that unique plant, this is your place. The two are so knowledgeable and are well known in the Orchid forums. Excellent speakers who always have a good story....check them out!

I was enormously pleased and impressed with H+R Nurseries. I heard about this nursery from the son of one of the owners. He detailed the care and unusual nature of the types of orchids cultivated. He generously offered to send some. I was so excited to actually see them in person: It was such a loving gesture. The orchids live in Hawaii and we live near San Francisco so I was concerned about shipping. I didn't need to be: The orchids arrived promptly very carefully packaged with cotton batting to protect the blooms. The variety was breathtaking from delicate tiny green buds (later blossoming to white bouquets) to vivid purple orchids. As I learned, the orchids are unique hybrids and it shows in their wonderful displays. They are adorning my kitchen. My husband has been sick with a terminal illness and they brightened up both our home and our spirits. Thank you H + R Nurseries!

The Orchid industry in Hawaii has been hit hard by globalization. Taiwan can offer orchids pennies to the dollar. There have been a few law suits against the US Dept of Agriculture by the local Orchid Industry, but they were all lost. H & R Nurseries is a nursery that doesn't quite have to worry about this all too much as their clientele is not your typical buying-generic-orchids-for-a-pretty-centerpiece customer; they specialize hybrids and species rather than Orchid clones. Nationwide and in Japan, they've really garnered collectors of rare Orchids.3 times a year, they dramatically mix up their inventory list- which is quite productive considering that most nurseries will update their inventory once every 5 years if you're lucky (Orchids take about 3 years to go from seed to sellable plant). The species they specialize most in is Cattleya family, particularly Cattleya Amethystoglossa. Their Amethystoglossa's are notorious for gathering many AOS (American Orchid Society) awards. Their hybrids are also of high quality, most of which also win awards.I recommend going onto flickr.com and doing a search for "H&R orchids"Their prices for species are a little steep, but that's just the price you have to pay if you want one-of-a-kind rather than generic.Random pet peeve about a lot of orchid nurseries, many of them are unorganized and unlabeled. H&R is so amazingly organized, they have seperate sections for Hybrids, Species, and Clones. Every one of their plant are tagged. And the sections are arranged in alphabetical order. For a true orchid lover, this is without a doubt the best place on the island to acquire orchids.

Not open on weekends and closes very early (3:30pm closes) and opens during rush hour traffic trying to get back to town (7:30pm). The days and times makes it very difficult to get out there and get back to town. This place have different varieties and some very rare ones compared to the other orchid nurseries. Really worth a visit and the prices are reasonable. I do want to note, some orchids need some touching up, pruning, and some extra care, but for me that is easy and in it for the rarity of orchids at this location. They primarily have Cattleyas, Dendrobiums, and Encyclia. They also had a Paph Rothschild that was tempting to buy. I do want to mention that their website has a downloadable pdf posting of all the availability orchids and a separate link for pics of orchids. This is great because I can see what they are and figure out what I want before I go their. They update the posting list I believe every year. They will be posting their new plant list in a few weeks. The person who runs the place is Harriet. Hopefully I spelt her name correctly but very nice person who was very helpful finding my plants I was looking for and gave me good advice and information on the Cattleyas I got from her.

As far as orchid nurseries go this is by far the best and well taken care of in my humble opinion. Very little weeds for such a large nurseries. Lots of community pots and very reasonable prices. Great hybrids and species. If your looking for unique, well grown plants this is your nursery. The other negative comments about H&R should be considered but shouldnt chase you away from a great place. They are orchid growers not babysitters. 5 stars for a huge selection of well grown orchids!!! Cant express how impressed i was with this nursery. Its a must go to for sure!!

I hated this place. I don't know how anyone could give this a good rating. The selection is poor, and worse, the lady running the place has horrible service. She treats you like a child, constantly following you and nagging. Go to Koba's Nursery instead.

Exotic variety of orchids for the connoisseur (not for those shopping for showy supermarket orchids as probably those who gave a negative review). Met by friendly, gracious Kathleen. I was overwhelmed by choices. Then Roy Takunaga, orchid breeder extraordinaire arrived. He advised me on what hybrids would do well in Northern California. He patiently answered questions and educated me on what to do to get orchids to rebloom. He had grown some of the orchids from seed. Amazing educator and grower. H&R ship to the mainland and foreign customers and also exhibit at major orchid shows on the mainland. This is the place for those enthralled with growing orchids!!

After visiting other nurseries in the area, I would say this is by far the worst. The lady who works here has the worst customer service I have ever seen. Curt and rude, she treated us like idiots and made us wait on her. I would highly suggest you do not come here.

I just concluded business with H & R, and I can say that I have never met a more friendly and helpful staff anywhere. I placed my order in early Jan 15, but suddenly the northeast was turned into Siberia. They help my plants and kept frequent communication open. Finally the fridge temps broke in mid March and I was able to take my shipment. They arrived healthy and in beautiful shape. Love them. Mahalo nui loa and Aloha !!! From Pennsylvania.

Just updating to add that their website no longer has the weird advertisement issue I mentioned, but the nursery and the people there continue to be awesome!
