Great food/service. Usually food comes out quickly. Kids eat free on Tuesday nights. Early bird specials from 4-6. They have happy hour as well. Sushi is always fresh! One of our favorite places.

Haven't been here for a while. My husband ordered the Combination Bento 3. The 3 choices of entree he chose was the Chicken Katsu, Teri Chicken and Karaage Chicken for $34.95. He wanted to choose the Tenpura where the picture showed only 1 shrimp and confirmed...yes, only 1. For me, I ordered the Chicken Katsu & Shrimp Tenpura for $28.45. The food also comes with toss salad, miso soup and rice. The food is pricey but it was tasty. I didn't think about it the last time because I ordered the Oriental Chicken Salad but today, I was craving shrimp and chose the Tenpura knowing what I would get. The one big question I have is, "1 shrimp?" I've been to a lot of different Japanese restaurants and never came across one that serves 1 shrimp...it's usually 2. I can go to any restaurants/takeout drive in's and order chicken katsu, teri chicken and all the other choices but to get the traditional tenpura, you have to go to a Japanese restaurant. Disappointing...If I feel like eating a good Oriental Chicken Salad, I'll come back.

Hair under our Godzilla roll. All of our steaks were cooked under temp, but nicely seasoned. Everything came out medium rare/rare, when we asked for medium.Ninja Roll has good flavor. Godzilla roll was more avocado than anything. Miso Butterfish 10/10, also quite big compared to most other places. Tempura was okay. Nothing really shined in our dinner beside the miso butterfish. Wouldn't come back on our own, only if invited for a birthday or family gathering.

Gyotaku Japanese Restaurant is a family style restaurant that serves a variety of Japanese dishes from bentos to sushi. I had mixed feelings about Gyotaku. I grew up on Oahu and this was a restaurant I came to with my family when I was a kid. I had good memories eating here with my family. The food was always good.I came back to Oahu for the first time in 18 years and I'm pretty sure the decor on the walls, the carpets, the chairs and tables were the same exact ones from 18 -25 years ago. I remember them. There was a model of the Missouri in the front desk area- I remember that from 20 years ago as well. It was super dated and hasnt updated in nearly 20 years. The plates and cups were plastic and beat up-doesnt feel appropriate for food that costs $35 per person. The price was expensive at easily $30-$40 per person. The food itself was pretty good-I have no complaints there. Solid Japanese food.Service was average to good. Friendly server and bussers.3 stars for good food. -2 stars for the outrageously outdated interior and beat up tables, chairs, plates etc, and high price.

Service is slow, our food took over 1 hour. There were about 3 tables with a handful of people on each table. But still service was slow so our elder guests were not happy.

Haven't been in ages but came for a birthday party a couple of days ago. It seemed like we had only one server for a party of 25 but he did a great job. We had the separate room that was right next to the entrance. Food was good but was kind of slow. The soup and salad came out right away but the entree took a while considering that we pre ordered our meals. Not a deal breaker though I know it was a large group. I don't think I would go out of my way to come here but the food was good.

We made a reservation for our family of 5. But they weren't super busy so we were seated immediately. Food didn't take long to come out and the staff were very friendly. My son got the tonkatsu and loved it. My youngest enjoyed the chicken katsu and the hubby got the curry katsu. I got the assorted poke bowl with tempura option. Everything was delicious! I liked the variety of options that were available. Our meals were all served with miso soup and salad. They offer some tea if you want tea as well. Plenty of parking underneath the restaurant so don't let the narrow parking lot detour you. The only negative thing I would say is it was very expensive, however, that seems to be the theme at most restaurants these days.

A couple of years since I did a review. Went to dinner and tried the early bird special (from 4:30 - 6:00 Wed, Thurs, Fri). Hubby had the boneless Teri short ribs and I had the maguro sashimi. Each was an additional $2.50 over the $18.99 price). The early bird special comes with 3 pieces shrimp tempura and assorted veggie tempura (eggplant, sweet potato, string beans.), miso soup and California sushi roll. Not a bad deal. We waited a while to be seated even with reservations. Then we waited awhile for our server to come take our order (bus boy brought water in the meanwhile). Then we waited a while for our meal. My tempura was cold... (They do have a sign saying they are hiring...) Hubby said his tempura was hot... It's not ok to make the orders for the same table separately and have one order cold... Tempura needs to be hot. Otherwise food was ok. My sashimi was fresh and good. Hubby liked his teri short ribs, the prices were tasty and tender. Hubby and I both agreed a bowl of plain rice would have been better than the California sushi with our sashimi and short ribs. Probably won't be back for a while on our own since I really don't like cold tempura...Even good tempura isn't good when cold.

Got the pork, tofu, and sashimi teishoku. The broth was really good (savory, packed with flavor, warm, and light all at once) and provided flavor to the rest of the items in the bowl. Sashimi was average so the main highlight of the dish was the pork and tofu bowl with mixed vegetables inside. My dad got the senior misoyaki Butterfish combo and my mom got the Dragon Ahi poke bowl which she said was bursting with flavor and one of the best poke bowls she has ever had mainly due to the sauce on top. I rated it a 3 stars for a few reasons. Gyutaku is really expensive as you going to pay about $30-40 per person. The only good deals you'll get for food is if you get the senior special or come for their day to day special. Also it gets pretty busy, especially during dinner time, so servers may take a while to get to you and people may wait a while to be seated. I suggest making a reservation beforehand if you intend to dine here. There is a parking lot below the restaurant and a second level outside of the restaurant, but the parking stalls can sometimes be tight. Had better Japanese food elsewhere for cheaper but their food is pretty good
