Sunday February 16, 2025 the 6 of us decided to come here after the craft fair at the Blaisdell Center. We had to wait a half hour as we didn't have a reservation and the place was crowded. We ordered and the food came out after awhile. The Misoyaki Butterfish was a really big piece! The Shrimp Tempura only had 1?? That was really disappointing! Normally, most places is at least 2 to 3 pieces. The ambiance is casual which is nice.

Ate the holiday special. The butterfish was very fishy smelling and as fishy tasting. I ate a couple of bites, but now I am nauseated and feel like I'm going to throw up. A strong fishy smell indicates that the fish is going bad.I was offered a replacement, but I didn't want to eat anything after the butterfish. I was told that they would take this dish off the bill. It was a $10 discount off the total price of the meal. A $10 discount is not worth feeling sick to my stomach. In the future I would plan to eat at home.

We come to this location every New Year since that's where the most senior members of the fam want to eat. This review is for two separate days since some of us returned two days later. They do more take out (great looking trays of shrimp tempura attractively heaped into a pyramid, covered with a plastic dome that has cut out in the middle so the tails can stick out. If I ever need to order shrimp tempura as take out, I would definitely consider getting theirs!Back to our dine in experience. Restaurant dine in is more leisurely since it's not as crowded due to all the take out orders. Service is pretty good. Food is still good. Local culture dictates you need to arrive before the restaurant opens for dine in at 11 so it's crowded and hot outside. It is what it is. You can check in before 11 and they'll call you when ready. Because take out orders can be picked up before 11, it gets confusing to those who aren't familiar with the routine for this holiday and folks think they can go in before 11, then get sent back out until called, but at least they're checked in. There are 2 small benches outside for those who can't stand for long periods of time. Our server came soon enough and took our order. Three of us requested no green onions in our soup and meals. Soup came out correct, but not the asst. poke don or spicy ahi don. Oh well. Miso soup was good. Not too salty, enough wakame and tofu. Salad is the usual greens, shredded carrots, cucumber slices, imitation crab leg, and Gyotaku Japanese dressing, nice and cold and good. Senior misoyaki butterfish was very good. Senior teriyaki salmon was good. One person always asks for salad dressing and teriyaki sauce to be served on the side and they always accommodate. Another had the senior teri beef and ate it all. L One person gets the lunch box bento of sushi and tempura with two chicken (says they don't serve it on holidays so I may be mistaken on what was actually ordered but that's what the items were. He always orders this annually so it must be good. Another got the tonkatsu/tempura combo and ate it all. One got the assorted fish poke bowl and the last the spicy ahi. Each of them had to pick out all the green onions... Bus boys constantly refilled water and hot tea, and cleared bowls and dishes promptly. Then two days later hubby and I returned for a lunch meeting where the meal was customized. It was somewhat like a senior meal but some add ons. First there was the usual miso soup and salad, which are always good. Then a senior like serving of teri chicken and a bowl of rice PLUS a serving of nishime instead of little cube of tofu - yum! Last we had a dessert of two small colored mochi with an. No idea what the special lunch cost, but the organizer did say it was for off hours (2:30-4:00), upstairs in their private section, and the food was customized to his request. Service was excellent also. Overall, both the holiday lunch and meeting lunch was great. Service was faster than the Pearl City location that we visited the week prior.

An island family favorite! Excellent values for kids and senior citizens. I highly recommend their early bird special: choice of 8 main entrees and tempura, California roll, miso soup. I ordered their chicken karaage (boneless Japanese fried chicken).

Lunch with a friend...Thank you Terry for the suggestion as I've received many flyers offers for both dine in and take out services and always kept them in mind since it's in a convenient area of McCully with lots of free parking.Gyotaku Japanese restaurant is enjoyed by many locals and for great reasons and luckily upon arrival we didn't have to wait long to be seated regardless of the seeming full restaurant which was a lively vibe. We got a nice corner seating and as I scanned their menu seeing such great variety with everything from salads to teishoku including a "Senior Menu" which is available all day every day...love and since we made it perfectly in time for their lunch specials which was just hard to resist it's reasonable price.I got the Yakitori Donburi, and first of all let me tell you that it came in a large saimin bowl...super huge portion so not what I expected ordering from the lunch special selection. Lots of tender chicken seasoned just right and just know that it also comes with salad and miso soup.Service was nice as they keep checking up on us and kept my water full, it's just nice to find a place that offers such variety choices of items that includes salad and soup which was just a refreshing break.Thank you!

NEW GO TO!! This restaurant is very homey and felt so comforting to go to with family / friends. We were seated immediately which felt nice since it was a busy Saturday night. There is two stories and we sat on the second story. I got the tonkatsu curry and the tonkatsu was so good n crispy. We also had the sushi roll and it was huge! So worth it. The service was so nice and helpful.

I don't know if this building is a gold mine or just the restaurant is great, but every time a restaurant comes in here the food is great and service is also on point. I remember it being suehiro back in the day which was also a japanese restaurant and so good. This is no exception, the sushi, bento boxes, miso soup, kids meal all was so good. The portions are normal size, and the food is fresh. Service was very quick and attentitve, bathrooms clean. Have come back here many many times.

Good for large groups with an advanced reservation. There are private & semi-private areas.Service is efficient. Menu has varied choices. Food is fine. Pies have too much gelatin & too little flavor.
