Donnie's BarbeQue Smokehouse

There are not many real bbq places on the island that isn't a fusion of some sort. This place is a southern bbq joint at the Honolulu Harbor Night Market. The family running it was super nice. I got smoked pork belly with a side of collard greens and mac n cheese. I will agree with the other reviews that my sides were a little bland. I just needed more salt; however it was cooked well. The pork belly was really good. I dipped it in the bbq sauce and it was perfect. I actually split this into 2 meals and once I added the salt to the sides, it was so much better.

What a spectacular show Donnie's display with it's enormous bareque cooker that tags along wherever this truck goes, you can see something's cooking and it's all just incredible to see.Hopefully it would be a regular thing to see them here at the Night Market at Ala Moana Shopping Center held bi-monthly on the second and last Friday nights is just so exciting as there are more night events for those who aren't able to attend ones during the day.Serving up items making any carnivore drool with everything from rack of ribs, smoked pork belly, pulled pork sandwich and even smoked turkey drumstick wow!! Tonight it was their Beef Brisket Sandwich Plate for $25Their plate consists of the item plus a choice of two sides...- Potato Salad- Mac and Cheese- Collard Greens- BBQ Beans- ColeslawNot feeling adventurous I got the potato salad and Mac and cheese...yum how can you not lol!! The potato salad is that not the Mac salad here in the 808 not my favorite as it has pickles but it was okay though sadly for the homemade Mac and cheese....DRY!Okay my sandwich my Beef Brisket Sandwich...not noted so I'm not sure if it's smoked it didn't taste like it's smoked but it lacked flavor. It does seem to look like it's kept in either it's cooked drippings or a light sauce but it was really reeeeeeally dry and wished it had some kind of sauce as I ended up discarding the bun (useless no flavor) and just ate the brisket which could've been amazing but it was so dry.

I'm from the south so I wanted to like this really bad. However this isn't it. The ribs were tough. The sauce was store bought, the collard greens were bland and didn't have any pork (or vinegar/sugar/heat), and the mac and cheese was also super bland. They tasted like generic shells and cheese (not even the deluxe kind) with some bread crumbs on top. Two stars because the couple running the truck was super nice.
