Comedy U

Fantastic and necessary venue that supports Hawaii's comedians! Hawaii has an amazingly vibrant comedy scene and Comedy U develops talent.

I wanted to visit a comedy club, and I decided to go to one while we're on our vacation in Hawaii. I found this place on Yelp, and I got tickets for my sis and I. We went on a Wednesday night, and we had some laughs. The comedians were pretty funny in some moments. We also got some chips/dips to share plus a couple of sodas. The space was pretty intimate and cool. It was nice to try out a comedy club there in Oahu, but there are definitely better ones in CA.

My boyfriend loved the jokes. Some of them were more geared towards locals but we were able to enjoy them nonetheless. It was our first experience at a comedy club and was worth it.

Comedy U is on Wednesday nights at Anna O'Brien's (see my review on Anna O'Brien's for a description on the venue). I found out about this through Groupon, which had two tickets for price of one. The cover is typically $7/person. This was my first time at Comedy U and at Anna O'Brien's. I have heard about Jose Dynamite, a local comedy talent. He sometimes hosts the show and introduces the various comedians to come up. This night was special. It was their Three Year Anniversary show. The venue is kind of cozy, if you sit at the very front, you're pretty close to the stage. I had a grand time. The show started about 8:30pm and it was just back-to-back acts. Almost non-stop. For about three hours. I loved the variety and the chance to see so many different styles of stand up comedy. There were acts from the other islands, as well as from Seattle! All types - some laugh-out-loud, some haha-in-your-head, some you gotta think, some just eh. But everybody is different and can appreciate certain kinds of humor depending on who you are. Some acts were very R-Rated. Do not bring your kids here. Even if they somehow got past the front entrance where they check ID. There were comics from various experience levels. You just never know when you come across a gem right?I really appreciate live shows and local talent. This is a great way to support them. I definitely intend to come back for another one of their Comedy U shows. Not sure what to expect for a regular Comedy U night, but I'll soon find out and let you know!

Every week, Comedy U puts on a great show of local and touring comedians. There is a wide variety of talent who performs, and it is WELL worth the price of $5 ($7 if you are not a student or military).I often perform here for open mics, and have performed on the featured show multiple times. It's a great time, and the drinks are adequately priced. You can get a beer for $3, so that's good.You should definitely follow them on Facebook for the most up to date information, such as who will be performing, and if there is a special format, such as a contest, national headliner, or regular features show.

Honestly, my favorite place to watch live comedy. I would probably say the best comedy club on the island. It's affordable! Only $10 and $7 for military/students! The guys who run it are very nice and hospitable. They'll escort you to a seat. Tip: If you enter your phone number, you can get a free drink token after a third visit! Normally you wouldn't expect Hawaii out of all places to be a stand-up comedy capital, but you'll be pleasantly surprised to find out that a lot of comedic talent resides here. Some big names have even dropped by for a surprise set (Hannibal Buress, Iliza Shlesinger). Comedy U also makes sure to change up the shows at least several times a year. They'll have roast battles and comedy competitions to name a few. After a show, you can even sign up for an open mic if you want to try your hand at comedy. The promoters and the comedians are very supportive and will gladly give you advice if you ask. And who knows? Maybe one day you'll be performing here too.

Attended comedy u @ square barrels....HAD A BLAST. The comics where diverse, colorful and unapologetic with their comedy (the way it should be). I have not laughed this hard or loud in a very long time. It was therapy! I will be looking forward to my next class at comedy u.

Comedians were not the best. Just a lot of cursing, vulgarity, and disrespect. Crowd seemed to be very uncomfortable at times. There's a reason it only cost $7.

I've always had a great time at Comedy U! Jose Dynamite is a fantastic host and the talent he brings together to put on these shows is amazing. My friends and I are grateful for what Jose does to bring light to this uplifting community of comedians.

Great show at the Blue Note Hawaii! Loved our host Jhonny and most of the comedians had a good connection with the crowd, mixed with visitors and locals. Drinks and food are a little expensive, though.
