Right in the middle of Kekaulike, I've probably walked by Chi Kong dozens of times in my life. Only recently did my wife ask for Look Funn, which led us to finding the Chi Kong Look Funn Factory. No longer will we ever skip this place during a Chinatown visit! You can see the aunties working hard in the back to make fresh Look Funn. It's not a fancy joint, so expect a wait if it's busy. Cash only, so make sure you got the green. The posted menu has bulk listing with no discount, but it's pretty simple: - Plain look funn $2/roll.- Specialty look funn $3/roll. (Charsiu, mushroom, dry shrimp) A simple menu update would help them out a lot. We opted for 2 of each specialty roll, for a total of $18. Aunty packed all six rolls into a plate lunch container, and the buggah was HEAVY. It's not cut, so we went home to slice it up. We didn't even finish half of it for lunch, and easily took the other half to a family dinner. I did experiment a bit, and the slices were very good pan fried. Worth trying if you don't mind the extra work. I'd also recommend making your own sauce to elevate the experience. Here's a simple one that worked wonders: 1/4 cup shoyu, 1 Tbsp vinegar, 1 Tbsp oyster sauce, 1 Tbsp chili crisp oil. Can mince garlic and chop green onion to taste. Ono. The charsiu was very fragrant and had good bits of meat. The mushroom was also very fragrant, in a different way. The dry shrimp was more subtle but still delicious. Honestly all bangers, and you should choose what sounds interesting to you.

03/02/25According to my last review, it's been 4 years... think it's gotten worse... prices higher, quality lower. Hardly char siu, only minced pieces and the funn is grainy. Look fun is $1 each... Remind me to not bother coming here.

What to have for lunch? We decided to get Look Funn.Remembering that Paul C had us try the look funn from Chi Kong Look Funn. The shop is located in the Kekaulike mall. After finding the shop I realized that I've bought Look Funnat this location under a different name. There was five ladies talking in the small shop. They notice that I was on my scooter. Making room for me to enter and waved me In. The young lady at the counter gave me my order and in a friendly and jovial way said " Happy Halloween ". Only then I realized the she had on a cute shirt with pumkinson it. Great service and the Char Sui and shimp Look Funn were delicious. Enjoy

I've always wanted to try this and finally bought 2 long pieces. Plain and mushroom were left, so I grabbed the last 2 mushroom. Staying at an AirBnB and was able to makeshift a sweet soy sauce for it, but it wasn't what I was hoping for. Normally these types of rice rolls should feel "smooth" but they were a bit mushy. Sadly, there wasn't a notable mushroom taste either and it felt like the rice flour might have been stale? These are made fresh daily but they tasted old. I'm sad that I didn't love these and may try cha Siu next time to see if I can upgrade the rating.

This is a look funn factory but they have a counter at the front that sells two of their variety of rice rolls AKA cheong funn or look funn. You can get the varieties with dried shrimp, char siu pork or just plain. They are sold so fresh and sometime you can feel the warmth of the rolls just out of the steamers. Prices are reasonable with a super easy to read pricing chart at the counter.

I learned today that "look funn" is the unique Hawaiian way of referring to a rice noodle roll (usually referred to as "chang fen" in Mandarin Chinese or "cheung fun" in Cantonese). I imagine part of the reason why this name is ubiquitous in Hawaii is because of this small, family owned shop that has been making "look funn" for over 70 years at this Chinatown location (see Jo Y's great review for a thorough history). "Look funn" is different from "chang fen" in that it's made of rice rather than wheat, so the noodle skin is much thicker, and the mix-ins are added directly to the batter, rather than being wrapped inside of the rice noodle roll. For $3 (cash only), you can get a HUGE look funn, definitely enough to split between 2 people if you want a taste. They roll it up in wax paper and put it in a bag for takeout. I recommend immediately bringing it home, plating it, slightly reheating it, then topping it with a homemade chang fen sauce (a mix of sugar, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and water) and fresh scallions. The noodle skin is hefty, well oiled, and has a great flavor. The mix-ins are just the supporting cast. I would also recommend grabbing some BBQ meat amd stir fried veggies from a local shop to pair with your look funn for a complete meal. YUM!

Back when I took my folks on excursions to Chinatown, my Dad introduced me to this place. My folks always got the shrimp and/or char siu cheung funn (look funn rolls). A few years ago, we discovered the mushroom cheung funn, and it is SO good, that I get the onos for it!The factory is in the Kekaulike Gardens courtyard, and it's just a doorway that you walk in and there's a counter and the nicest lady taking your order through the window. I think it's cash only...but I could be wrong--I've only paid with cash. My suggestion is to bring a zip top bag and napkins/wet wipes. Go hungry and get a bunch. Some to snack on while you walk around Chinatown, and some to take home to enjoy later. They're easy to reheat in the microwave.

Following Paul C.'s journey through Chinatown has made me curious about venturing. In the past, I rarely visited Chinatown except for manapua, roast duck &/or pork and char siu. I have heard of this long standing business for years; seeing other friends checking in. I actually had visited with my parents when I was a child and later as a young adult. I found it was difficult to communicate and caused me to not revisit. I finally made it! Things I learned is to visit early for the best chance to pick up all varieties. No worries because I got three varieties! Loved how the noodles are fresh and amazed they didn't get stuck together. I learned you can request chopped or not. I opted for leaving the noodles uncut. I looked up a sauce to pour over the steamed noodles for dinner. I used the plain noodles to make duck noodle the next day. The next day I stir fried the remaining cheung fun noodles with veggies to make a takeout worthy chow fun. I loved how nicely the woman packed up the noodles! Visiting Chi Kong led me on a journey to purchase veggies and a duck at nearby stalls. Btw, I scored some fresh moi! Yummos! I will definitely be back! Supporting these small businesses are so important as we are losing all those wonderful mom & pop stores! For those who are intimidated like I was, the next generation of owners/workers can speak English! Much thanks to Paul C. for my Chinatown journey! Next time, I will plan better and bring more shopping bags!
