Nadine C. "Shopping and dining in Kailua, Oahu,Hawaii...Located on busy Kailua Road - on the Windward side of the island - Kailua Shopping Center is across the street from Kailua Town Center. It's easy to confuse... just remember that Kailua Shopping Center has Times Supermarket as one anchor and Lanikai Juice as the other anchor. Another good landmark is BookEnds because their sign is the tallest and largest of all of the businesses. In-between the anchors, the popular eateries are Donut King, Mexico Lindo, Paniolo's, Aloha Salads, India Cafe, Island Snow, Morning Brew, and newcomer, Mala Market (second location).Current shopping options include: Coco's Trading Post, Dogtown Bakery, Stussy, SoHa KEIKI, Lanikai Bath and Body, Windward Jewelers, and Classic Waves. If you need some services, AT&T, Kailua Nail Care, and Cornerstone Community Chiropractic are here. There's a convenient restroom in the corner (by Dogtown Bakery) and free parking all around. When you're in Kailua, stop by this open-air strip mall and enjoy the relaxed vibe!"

The old one was getting replaced by something new, bigger and better.Today that is continuing. Ramen Ya just moved in. Longs has been here. Jamba Juice gets a good amount of business. And, so does Coffee Bean. Ewa Seed gets the after school crowd to cool off. Subway is good. Genki Sushi gives a nice option for stomach cravings. So does L&L,There is lots of parking. It does get busy by Taste of Hong Kong but there's parking by Longs. That could change when Applebee's opens up very shortly. It's a good working center servicing the immediate needs of the community."

Lyla D. "My family and I have been coming and going to this Chinatown Cultural Plaza since it was designed and built in 1974. This cultural plaza has been and still is a center and point of action of Honolulu's Chinese community. A well-organized and popular event that is held here is the celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year. For 2 days, multiple vendors from Chinatown as well as all of the tenants "open their doors" to the festivities such as the Chinese Lion Dance, Chinese cooking demonstrations and food stalls, lunar new year souvenirs and apparel stalls and live entertainment. In addition, Chinese artwork, calligraphy demonstrations and music stalls are scattered about the plaza. During the course of the year, we're usually here to dine at some our favorite Chinese restaurants such as Lee Ho Fook, Legend Seafood, Taipan, Won Kee and Fook Lam. Over the years, we've seen many of the original tenants leave only to be replaced by some smaller business or just remain vacant. Um, does anyone remember Doong Kong Lau (Hakka), Fat Siu Lau Chop Suey, Empress or Forum restaurants? There have been a couple of high-end Chinese jewelry shops in this plaza but I think only 1 remains. I can't say that I've ever done business at any of these shops but every so often, I've ogled the 24K bangles as I pass by.I've shopped in the Chinese stationery shop for Chinese Good Luck envelopes (lai see-Cantonese or hongbao-Mandarin) and even got some Chinese opera and movie Blu-Ray discs for my father before he passed away. The shop owners are pretty friendly but understand that English isn't their primary or first language so there might be a bit of language barrier.BACKGROUND:Honolulu's Chinatown Cultural Plaza was designed and built with combined efforts of six societies and organizations to the Chinese Community. Chee Kung Tong, Kuo Min Tang, Leong Doo, Lung Doo, Dr. Sun Yat-sen School and Mun Lun School shared a vision to perpetuate the Chinese culture and tradition in the community, and to provide a gathering place where people of all cultures and heritage can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Chinatown. How quickly the years have gone by as you can see the environmental wear and tear and perhaps inexpensive construction materials and workmanship. We wish that the property managers would stress better maintenance as there are many good casual dining spots here and Chinese cultural events that many residents and vIsitors come to enjoy here."

There are three or more levels to walk. The street level is safe during daylight hours. The mall level has more foot traffic so it's pretty safe to walk here during store hours. The top level is designed a bit awkward for walking as there are many bends and curves on the top level. Usually there are quite a few people, elders, retirees, young ones and employees on the mall level. Lower levels are okay but go with a walking buddy. Lots of window shopping and if you need a quick cool down, walk into a store. Pick up a beverage or snack at one of the many food courts. Many public and store restrooms are available at AMC. Ed L. "The Kalama Valley Shopping Center is in transition. Looking at it as a first time visitor, it has seen better days for sure. Deserted and most likely forgotten, this once vibrant hub of economic activity in this portion of East Oahu has been vastly erased from the community's consciousness for a while. Normally, I would frequent Koko Marina shopping center or the Hawaii Kai Towne center in my outings to Hawaii Kai, but I felt compelled seek this place out just to see Kalama valley, the surrounding neighborhood, and the larger community. I was here on July 4, but clearly the shopping center was not at all a thriving engine of commerce in this area.Located on Kealahou Street, this derelict shopping center is nearby to the Koko Head Botanical gardens, which I included on this day trip to Kalama Valley before heading to Sandy Beach for much needed R&R before returning to work on the day after the 4th of July. Yep, gotta work on a Friday, especially when there's a crapload list I need to get done or I get busted. Anyhow, also nearby are some community parks for sports, and a cute little golf course. Kalama Valley Shopping Center reminds me a little like Aina Hina Shopping Center, but wow, I didn't know it was this bad out here. There is a private parking lot, but as you can imagine, it's virtually empty. Pretty sure it's lone active tenant, Thai Valley Cuisine isn't filling it up packed on the daily, but its good. If you are like me, TheBus route #23 passes by this shell of a shopping haven, but I think that the Thai Valley Cuisine is pretty good. (See review). Not sure what else to say about the Kalama Valley shopping center, since there's not much to review about a shopping village that's lost it's mojo. I should do some research as to why this shopping center is the way it is. Hoping that there is a revitalization plan in the works, just so it will be a better visit the next time around. This mall is like your basic community strip mall that can be a decent vestige of community pride when the investment is there and the community is behind this instead of venturing out to Koko Marina and Hawaii Kai Towne center for their everyday living and entertainment options. There wasn't much in the way of chairs and seating areas around this strip mall. There is restroom facilities here, but under lock and key. Looks like the upkeep isn't particularly good and it probably had lead to the shopping center's decline, among other issues. As mentioned before, I have faith that this shopping village can overcome its challenges and be a spotlight of economic prosperity that the entire community can enjoy. Just not recently, I'm afraid. Just gotta believe and I'll be coming back when that time has come. I do like the architecture that this shopping center sports. Reminds me of the Kona-Keahole International Airport, where the roofs are pyramid in shape.Support local!Unrated."

Niu Valley Center

Niu Valley Center

★★★☆☆ 3.3 (3) • $$

Ed L. "Whenever you head to Hawaii Kai from downtown Honolulu or Ala Moana on the island, chances are you will pass through the quaint area of Niu Valley. This small shopping mall sits between Aina Haina shopping center in Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai Towne Center & Koko Marina center in Hawaii Kai.It's a quaint little strip mall, anchored by a church, 7-Eleven convience store, and the Jack in the Box along Kalanianaole Highway. You may miss it if you're not looking for it, but it is a shopping hub, that's basically a food / restaurant stop for anyone and everyone who needs to stop here and pick up daily necessities. With that said, the Niu Valley shopping center isn't really a shopping center, just a collection of restaurants that come together to bring the community some variety in between Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai just so you don't have to travel too far into town to get what you need. I've come here twice already in the year 2020 just to check things out in the area. I noticed a couple of new additions in 2020 April, especially a new Vietnamese restaurant called "Pho Time" as well as two Japanese restaurants, called Café Asia and Gyotaku. Jack in the Box fast food restaurant has been around the property as far as I can remember - as well as the King's Chapel church. The 7-Eleven conveience store has been around for a solid number of years too. If you pass this strip mall, you're missing on a lot of potentially good eats here in east Oahu. The overall experience here at the Niu Valley shopping center can be described as underwhelming at best. While the shopping center is very much open air, it does lack that certain appeal when it comes to closed air conditioned shopping mall venues like Pearlridge shopping center and Kahala Mall, to name a few on the island. I arrived here around 1pm on separate occassions on April 2020 searching for cheap eats. The first time I discovered for the first time - Pho Time, which I assumed is relatively brand new or at least 6 months new. I can be sure that I'll be back to try this place when this pandemic is contained. Both experiences here on a Sunday afternoon seemed to be dead at best, but at least there was a few people roaming about and there was parked cars and a line of cars snaking through the Jack in the Box drive thru lane. Signs of life here on a weekend is nice, especially during a crisis. It was still quiet though, albeit eerie to see. Everything was take out only, but at least the restaurants were open. Just can't sit down and dine in though. Even the King's Church was closed for services. I'm sure it's like that across the island. You probably woudn't think it is a shopping center if you were crusing on by Kalanianaole Highway, but it's here open for your business. Come on by if you are in the area. The good thing about Niu Valley shopping center is that there is plenty of parking stalls here. Plenty for y'all to go shopping and your take out meals during this phase of year 2020. Since services for King's Church won't be held for a while, you can come here on the way home or on the way to work to pick up lunches or dinners whenever you can during this "stay-at-home" quarantine we have in place since March 25, 2020. I'm so grateful that many restaurants are open for take-out to help the community through this tough uncertain time we all are facing. I guess what makes us stronger will help us carry through this ordeal and onward to better days ahead. For me though, the shopping center doesn't feel like a real mall. Just a couple of buildings that is home to a few restaurants and a big parking lot, along with a church within a residential area and Kalanianaole Highway. While not a contemporary shopping center that you know and love like Ala Moana or even Hawaii Kai Towne Center, Niu Valley shopping center serves the community surrounding it without having to travel too far for basic stuff for everyday living. I know I spent about an hour here buying my meals while I was here and checking out the restaurants I plan on coming back to when this pandemic is more under control and we can do siit down dining again.4.0 stars for the overall experience. 3.0 stars for the asthetic appeal, but the community needs are there. I am glad that there is a Vietnamese restaurant I can come to that I haven't tried yet near home.Support local!B"

I love heading over to the Pali to do some "chillaxin" and lay out on that nice and silky-soft sandy beach Dr. Beach rated so highly in his annual beach health report. This no longer holds true for this cute and quaint sleepy town. Recent changes in the area is making the place look a lot more like (IMHO) Waikiki town wanna-be. It's almost like a slumbering giant slowly waking up now. However, if they can maintain a different identity than Waikiki, I am all for that. Perhaps it will end up being more like Hawaii Kai - commercialized but no high rises. Let's hope so.This revitalized center is nice, new and exciting for those who enjoys a vibrant scene. There are lots of energy here and the vibes are so upbeat as more new shops and eateries continued to pop up in the KTC and all over the nearby places. You can already tell the soon-to-be-opened Target store will make the area busier (and hopefully not too overly congested). In the mean time, Whole Foods Market, CPK, Longs Drugs and Pier One have already gained many repeat customers. What makes it nice and refreshing is that KTC scored one of their larger and more appropriate anchor tenants: Whole Foods Market. This high-end grocer is perfect for Kailua since it fits the demographics so well. And of course, I love the entire concept of WFM. For years, I classified Kailua's dining scene as a "culinary spot" they are not! WFM has a neat bar-and-pizza counter made for a perfect spot to enjoy a smooth glass of Cabernet Sauvignon or a frosty glass of icy cold local beer at the end of the day. Now, nicer restaurants and eateries are there to stay. It is such an easy place to frequent. Parking is ample and open. In addition, KTC also holds a weekly farmers market on Thursday nights. The amount of incredible gourmet foods and fresh local produce available at the farmers market is awesome. I really enjoyed hanging out there for the entertainment and the food. When I am lucky enough, I make it in time to WFM's happy hours. Life is good. After a good meal, I can still run my errands at Longs Drugs located next door. One of the best things about the shopping center is it's location as it's near bus routes, schools, the library, and within walking distance for some residents. For the residents that do walk, however, they sometimes "borrow" the shopping carts from Longs or Safeway to transport their goods home. And for residents that are brave enough to attempt to cross busy street that is Ala Lilikoi from the apartments across, one word of advice: RUN!........or at least walk fast as you've chosen to cross one of the busiest streets in Salt Lake not using a crosswalk.Bottom Line: The community shopping center trying it's best to fulfill the needs of the community."

Irene M. "The maze in Mililani...One of the most confusing designs of the traffic flow is found here in Mililani. Lots of great biz are found here in the Gateway at Mililani Mauka which is found right at the freeway entrance/exits with McDonald's being the prominent building viewable. There is Hele along with Starbucks and McDonald's that does draw in many for the drive thru convenience and does make it a challenge navigating between others while some parking area are for specific biz.The impressive selections of shops, restaurants and personal services are found here which I do love just be mindful of the drive thru lines that some may be patiently waiting it's not the greatest place if you're in a rush and aren't familiar with the layout.Thank you!"

Irene M. "Shops, services and more...Kunia Shopping Center is a collection of business offering various types of services including banks, Pet Hospital, Accupuncute and Massage which all sounds like the place to go on this visit as I was leaving Walmart I remembered that there was a Starbucks here as well and had to visit for a much needed coffee break. It seems like there's a lot of parking though with many other tenants it can get quite full though if you don't mind you can always find one with a bit of patience. Great area that right after the Kunia exit coming in from town is a great convenience and a time saver that i see many come to this area for various shops for service.Thank you!Thank you!"

Irene M. "Hungry, thirsty or just tired...Airport Commercial Center is a great place to settle many issues as the variety of merchants here along with a huge parking spaces making it easy to do so.In this day I had an super early appointment for an auto repair...6:30am at nearby New City so breakfast wasn't an option so I was pleasantly surprised that it was done an hour earlier than promised so I did a Yelp search and was happy to fine Joe's Grill Express has breakfast and thought it was an easy drive with parking. With a few other familiar choice like Subway, Bale, Aloha Sushi, Mini Garden Express, Nimitz Mart, Nimitz BBQ, Papa's Deli and Aloha Green there is a great amount of choices here including the location and convenience.Thank you!"

Maile K. "The driveway to the building is right after the crosswalk on the left. I had to go around the block because I missed it the first time, as the building itself is set back from the street. Mind the rate schedule when you drive in. I had to pay $18 for two hours of parking. Good thing I had my debit card. The machine takes cash & coins and credit cards. Watch for pedestrians as they don't watch for you."

Angel H. "This is the main shopping center in the heart Waikiki along with the International Marketplace. This center has mostly hight end luxury shops. Tiffany, Harry Winston, Fendi, Hermes, Saint Laurent, etc. all are located in this center. This center also has some of the best dining options. They have a great mix of casual dining in the food court. Try L&L Barbecue and Kulu Kulu Bakery if you need a quick bite. They also have very good sit down restaurants. P.F. Chang, Cheesecake Factory, Noi Thai, Wolfgang's Steakhouse, Doraku and Tim Ho Wan to name a few. The customer service center closes at 8pm. If you need to go there for any reason or to get validation for parking make sure you go before 8."
