Twisted Mac

Violet H. "I thought I was supporting a new local business, but the receipt shows that this is actually an arm of Romano's Macaroni Grill. The name describes the offerings - various takes on mac and cheese. I tried the toasted ravioli, the regular mac and cheese (there was a 2-for-1 special on this on Uber Eats), the cheeseburger mac and cheese, and BBQ mac and cheese. Let's take each one separately. The toasted ravioli came with marinara sauce, but even with, it was rather meh. I lived in St. Louis many years ago and they have awesome toasted ravioli. This was nothing like those. Now I did expect them to taste different because the St. Louis ones have a meat filling and these are filled with ricotta. These were not breaded and were not drained before being put into the container so the bottoms were pretty greasy. Tops were crunchy, though.Suggestion: Stir your mac and cheese before chowing down.My favorite was the BBQ mac and cheese version. It was listed as "spicy" and it is, but it won't make you sweat. You'll mostly feel it in the back of your throat. It's a little sweet. I asked for the peppers to be left off, but either the request was missed or ignored, or didn't come through. This one has the best favor, IMHO.The regular mac and cheese was also pretty good. Could be a good choice for kiddos. Of my three choices, this one was the creamiest. The cheeseburger take was okay, but nothing special. Oddly, I could pay for several kinds of extras (i.e., steak, chicken - for all the mac and cheese selections) but extra ground beef was not an option. Beware: The cost for some of those options can be quite high. You can get extra sauce or vegan cream, too.The order came with plenty of parmesan and I tried some here and there, but it really didn't change things much. There are three sizes to the mac and cheese offerings: 1. Single2. Family3. PartyThere were a couple of salads, another appetizer, a few other main choices (including a vegetarian option), and some good-looking desserts. The desserts were expensive. The only beverages (at least on Uber Eats) were Acqua Panna or San Pellegrino. I would have gone for a diet soda but in the absence of anything but fancy water, I opted for free tap water from my kitchen sink.Craving pasta? Need a carb infusion? This is a good choice if you pick wisely."

Brennan T. "Five stars for service, but two stars for food. The family that runs Verbano is so nice, and the service was wonderful. Like, if every restaurant had service like this, there would be few complaints. The aunty and uncle are super friendly! Sadly, the food is pretty mediocre. The sausage was hard, and the peppers were not even cooked. My 2nd generation Italian friend said the puttanesca was not puttanesca, but the chicken was cooked well and was moist. My chicken lasagna was good, but nothing to write home about. We were grateful that Verbano has gluten-free pasta (penne), which is why we went there for my friend who is severely allergic to gluten. Italian food is often super expensive, but Verbano is typically under $20/entree. Prob still a bit high for the quality of the food. The space was clean, so no complaints there. Parking is either in a paid private lot or on the street."

It has thin layers of pasta made it with the layers of cheese. The pasta carbonara was amazing and yummy yum yum. Oh the lobster bisque was over the top but the sale was just average. The tiramisu was more cakey than creamy. The orange crème brûlée was very cold and flavored like orange. It expensive and I think that it is delicious but it would need to be a reason of a special occasion to go not just to have dinner."

LT L. "So...you start by ordering your food at the cashiers/hostess desk. After ordering you take your table number and silverware to the open table of your choosing. For the three meals and one iced latte we paid around $68 total, before tip. I didn't tip until after the meal, and why would you, no service has been rendered. We did tip after the meal. The music is about average, I could hold a conversation with my daughters if they weren't stuck on their phones. It took several minutes to get the water and iced latte we ordered. The food came out a little after the drinks. Everything tasted good, I really enjoyed the bulgogi eggs benedict, I thought the hollandaise was a touch bland but overall good. The potatoes weren't anything special, so if that's something you weigh your breakfast decisions on you might consider trying something besides the potatoes. My girls liked their respective versions of French toast. The guava French toast had a nice flavor but not overly sweet. Overall we would come back to Kayak Cafe. We usually go around the corner to Aloha Kitchen but the line was over an hour and I wanted to eat sooner. Mahalo Kayak Cafe, see you again in the future!"

All food made fresh, so food can take 15-30 minutes (call the order ahead and no wait!). Our family LOVES the mozzarella stick (which is absolutely HUGE), the meatball, spaghetti, and various pizzas. I've also tried the calzone, which was delicious but definitely a new experience for me (cheese inside only). Prices are very reasonable. Bring CASH and save a few bucks. They park in Waimanalo. Parking is right beside the truck, off the highway. Locals and tourists alike come here. Only open a few days/week, so don't miss your chance to try! My family and I will keep coming back! ENJOY!!!"

This was my 3rd order, the first order was way beyond expectations, second time it was not quite the same feeling, but I could not get the first visit out of my head, and ordered again. The sub was hot with all the cheese and fresh vegetables (peppers/onions) that I missed on the second order. I can't say enough good things about this place. For sides we had twice baked potato, creamed spinach and garlic potatoes. For appetizers we had the small seafood platter and crab cakes. The appetizers were good. The entrees were ok we didn't think it was anything special especially for the price . I would have to say the desserts were the best. We ordered panacotta, tiramisu and tart. The shop is small, located among the many other eateries in the hall, and offers Italian takeout. Their menu isn't extensive but it's enough to scratch that itch if you're been on a carb diet for a long time and need a cheat lunch. I ordered the linguine with sausage and meat ball sauce with veggies. The plate was a "mini" but the portions are very generous. At $10, I was surprised at the heftiness of my lunch while walking back to my office. All the food is precooked, so again, don't expect gourmet, but it was tasty overall. I'd say the taste to volume to value ratio was pretty good.Service is A+ and the lady behind the counter was very pleasant and courteous."

They shine for a while and just as quickly as they appeared, poof, gone. Chinese pizza, Japanese hotdogs, Korean burritos. Now Vietnamese / Italian.Intro aside, this is a fun fusion. Strong flavors, umami supercharging and the unique effect when you'd say "that taste strange" is dismissed as "experimentation".For starters, the scallop Carpaccio shines. Earthiness of the crushed pistachio nuts plays up the nuttiness of the browned butter that in turn make the sweet oceanic taste of the scallop shine all tempered with a burst of citrus.Do not pass on the Hokkaido milk rolls. Pillowy soft with a good balance of sweet and savory. The black garlic (not to be confused with burnt garlic) butter, adding another dimension. For pasta, the "Dan Mien Vietnam-Atriciana", their take on the classic Roman amatriciana, replaces the guanciale with lap xuong sausage and Italian pasta with egg noodles packs a flavor punch. Sweet, rich, cheesy, who doesn't like that? All is not perfect. The grilled kampachi is presented beautifully with perfectly crisped skin but the fish itself, overcooked and slightly dry. The "Char Siu Pork" featuring a kurobuta rib chop, while perfectly cooked, lacked the expected roasted meat, burnt maltose and umami notes of fermented tofu that you crave from freshly made char siu.Small but well chosen Italian focused wine list. Good selection of spirits including a nice selection of amaro to close the meal.Bohemian chic decor.Friendly, competent service.A fun dining experience that is best suited for good spirited foodies who love to make comments at the table as they sample this and that. Located in the Alohilani Resor lobby, this restaurant is right next to the aquarium and has a really cute ambiance. We started with the caponata, chicken liver pate, and tempura octopus. I don't think the caponata or pate were really my taste, but the tempura octopus was good. I think the tempura batter had nori mixed in and the octopus itself was pretty tender. Aunt ordered the uni pasta, which was kinda watery. I think it would've been a bit better had the sauce been thinker. I ordered the gnocchi which came with a meat sauce and zucchini. The gnocchi was delicious and the sauce complemented it well. Service was quick and friendly and for a Sunday early dinner, the place was not packed at all. Keola K. "Wow! Amazing! Deliciooooooosoooioooo! Are words that kept reappearing in my mind as I took a bite of all items we had for dinner!!!Funny story sort of related that in hindsight was a huge mistake........ My wife loves Italian food, so for an anniversary many years ago, La Cucina was on short list of new Italian spots to try. As you can guess, she ended choosing another spot. It's now safe to say, La Cucina blows that place out of the water!!! This place is racing to the top of my list for best Italian restaurants....not just on this island.....but any I can remember even on our travels. Why you stay.......the FOOD is amazing. Here's a quick hit list of our first bites here:Salad......fresh greens and tomatoes packing a punch of flavor thanks to the olive oil vinaigrette that was vibrant and tart Mushroom crostini......crunchy, umami, buttery, rich. Pastas - All made fresh. We tried 4 of them: 1. Crab, 2. Sausage, 3. Bolognese, and 4. Spaghetti Aglio Olio. They all pack so much flavor, the sauce just marries with the pasta in every bite. They were all wonderful, and to highlight how good they were....I'll just talon about the most simplest one. Spaghetti Aglio Olio is a simple pasta with minimal ingredients that include Garlic, olive oil, capers, parsley, Pecorino Romano, and a touch of red chili flakes. As I already stated for all, each bite had so much flavor......large punch of garlic, quick hits of tart and tangy from the capers, a zig and a zag of heat for the chili, in which the olive oil is the glue to all the flavor. That leads me to the Veal Picatta, which paired perfectly with the Aglio Olio. Rich, creamy, and zesty sauce all over the veal. The veal was so sofr and tender. Amazing! The host/server was friendly, polite, and very attentive. The restaurant is cool and hip, it is on the smaller side, so get there early so you can get a seat. We just beat the crowd....once it got crowded the place got loud from all the talking and laughter. Every party seemed to be enjoying and have a great dinner. The best part is the restaurant is run by only a wife (host) and husband (chef) tag team and a helper in the kitchen. You can tell they take pride in their restaurant and food. In seeing some other reviews about wait time, is probably the opposite end of that spectrum.....you only have a single person cooking, so in response to that........:wonderful things comes to those people who are patient ;-) haha."

We ended up ordering a generous spread, and every dish was spot on--my stomach was definitely put to the test!We started with the Padron shisito peppers, which were good but a bit too salty for my taste. The Pulpo was outstanding, and the Melanzane dip--a unique blend of eggplant and mozzarella--was like nothing I've ever had before, absolutely mouth-watering and definitely a must-try. My friend also swore by the lamb chops, saying they were some of the best he's ever had.For my entrée, I opted for the carbonara with portabella fritto. Unlike the traditional version, this dish had a delightful twist of mushroom flavor, and the portabella fritto itself was incredible--thinly sliced mushrooms that were crispy yet soft, almost chip-like in texture. It's hard to put into words, but it really brought the dish together. We wrapped up the meal with cheesecake, which--admittedly, I'm a bit biased about--was fantastic, especially with the subtle addition of apple.A neat bonus is the building's history; the restaurant appears to have been a bank, which you can tell by the vault tucked away at the back. The decor is thoughtfully done, and even the bathrooms boast modern touches like bidets that add to the overall ambiance. Service was attentive without being overbearing, making for a smooth dining experience.Quick tip for anyone planning a visit: it's valet parking only.
