You'll need to walk down a slope to get to the pavilion banquet room. It is a smaller room, but it looked liked it fit around 20 tables that could fit up to 10 guests on rectangular table. I've haven't been to the pavilion banquet room before and the last time I was in the main banquet room was over two decades ago.The staff served us the food at the buffet line. My friends were allowed to bring in outside food like lechon and Filipino desserts that were available at a table separate from the buffet line and it was self serve. There's lots of parking on three levels in the parking lot. It's a really nice place to throw parties."

Lyla D. "The Ke'Alohi Golf Course (Par 3) is Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam's baby sister to its 18-hole championship course, Mamala Bay. Ke'Alohi Par 3 is just 9-holes that measures 1435 yards or 2870 yards for 18-holes. It plays as a par 27 for men and a par 29 for women. The holes range from 100 to 200 yards so as you might imagine, you don't need a full set of clubs. When we come here to practice, we usually bring just 3 clubs and focus on our short game. We like that this course can be played at night until 10:00 pm under field lights and you're kept cool by the evening breezes with no worries about getting sunburned. Green fees are very inexpensive and range from $6 to $11, dependent upon your military or civilian status. For the inexpensive fee, don't be looking for a well-manicured or lush course with water features or fancy course layout. However, like with all golf courses, proper attire and etiquette is important. This course attracts many experienced and beginner golfers...patience is key while the pace of play can sometimes get bogged down. For those more experience players, might I suggest that you search your memories of when you began golfing and for the beginners, please understand that golf is a SPORT that has rules and a time frame. With that in mind, let's all just go out to have fun!Rating 3.5 rounding up to 4 stars for the flexibility of hours of operation and friendly staff.#373"

Kingston W. "I was in my apartment watching TV and I saw an ad promoting the idea that Ala Wai Golf Course should be converted into a botanic garden. * What? *My timeshare is across the channel, so I decided to go take a look around. I did not play. I took a walk on the golf path along the first nine holes.Ala Wai GC is a municipal 18-hole, par-70 golf course located in Honolulu. The course is relatively flat. The greens and fairways are Bermuda grass. There are three sets of tees for various skill levels. There are great views of Diamond Head and the Koolau Mountain Range. The Ala Wai Canal separates this golf course from Waikiki. The complex has a putting green, driving range, starter's office, café and pro shop. (The pro shop was looking for a new concessionaire at the time of my visit.) The two-story clubhouse includes offices, lockers, storage, and a second-floor community recreation room. There's ample free parking. I visited early in the morning and observed a large number of people preparing to play. Hawaii tourism is still recovering from the pandemic; but it is said that Ala Wai GC is the busiest course in the U.S. At its peak, Ala Wai CG hosted 180,000 rounds of golf a year--and average of 500 a day. This leads to some of the complaints that I have read online--but I'd like to offer a reality check:"It's too expensive". This is a municipal course. And there are two sets of fees: one for local residents with state ID, and another rate for visitors. Are people complaining because it's not as nice as a private or public course? Are they complaining because they were tourist and paid the higher fees?"It's hard to get a tee time". It's recommended that you go online and make a reservation--especially if you're coming in as a tourist. If you're playing solo, you can take your chances, go to the starter's office, and sign up on the standby list."You can't play a leisurely game". That's probably true. When really busy, they start games every 10 minutes. The marshals keep things moving. How busy it is depends on the day--it's hit or miss. You can rent clubs on site. And as I walked about Waikiki, I noticed there are quite a few shops that sell and rent golf equipment. While I like the idea of playing this course, I don't think I would do well in a fast tempo environment. As for the "botanic garden" proposal, developers have coveted the 150-acres since before the course opened in 1931. Various proposals to redevelop a portion or the whole site have come and gone. Besides, the state of Hawaii owns the land; the city simply administers the site. (But local residents should stay vigilant.)"

If you aren't a people person you can buy a small or large bucket of balls for the driving range from a machine. There is a bar and a restaurant on premises and you can even order food and drinks from your cart! Competitively priced. The golf carts are sensitive so beware and make sure that everyone is inside the cart and seated before even thinking about touching the gas. The cart comes with a screen that shows you the information for each hole. You can also do a "flyover" so you can see the details and line up your plan if attack. You can add your party and keep score on it as well or use the paper and pencil that they provide you as well."

The course is complete with an amazing pro shop that sells everything you need, driving range that is perfect for practicing driving and chipping, putting green and 604 Mangiamo Italian Restaurant on the second floor. It's definitely one of the best golf courses in the DoD and a fun course to play and you can't beat the prices. The course can be challenging at times, focus on one shot at a time. You need to have a DoD or military ID card to play or have someone sponsor you in order to play. This review for the Sony Open in Hawaii is being written by someone uninterested in golf (but that seems to be pretty common at this event)! The Sony Open is an annual golf tournament at Waialae Country Club, situated right off the beach in Kahala. It's easy to get to the tournament; they provide free shuttle service to/from Waikiki, and also from two parks in the neighborhood with ample free parking. If you're so inclined, it's easy to ride share or walk here from many bus stops in the neighborhood. Tickets are available online before the event including: general, VIP, and entrance to various tents with food and drinks included. I've been fortunate to be gifted complimentary tickets every year from a friend who plays in the charity tournament. Military/family is always free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate for a surcharge. For spectators, it's worth coming. If you love golf or just want a day outside, this is the perfect event. The course is roped off, but it's easy to walk around and through various areas during play. Basically everything is open to explore, see the players up close, and enjoy food and drink. Toward the middle of the course you'll find a tent village with local merchants, restaurants, food trucks, and bars selling their wares. Beer is available and allowed everywhere on the course, hard liquor is confined to the restaurant areas. Prices are a little on the high side, but comparable with other outdoor events. For football fans, there's even an AC tent with the games on including a beer bar (access is $50 extra per day). Restrooms are plentiful; they have options of port-a-potties and full restroom trailers with AC and running water.Volunteers are everywhere and are friendly and helpful if you need. We loved checking out the Sony 20 Years of the Open tent this year, which showcased gadgets, movies, and the winners for each of the last twenty years of competition. Be sure to check out the pro shop, which is fully stocked with by Sony Open and Waialae Country Club merchandise and souvenirs."

All times have been during the pandemic and one of main reasons why I golfed there. There's not many trees there. The 3rd and 4th holes have some that may come into play but mostly the type of bushes that grow along the seashore. The greens are not the best and some are better than others but none were slow. Some have these clover like weeds but are tiny and flat. The staff there was very friendly everytime. I give this course 5 stars because it's the cheapest place to golf. You can get a tee time almost any day and time even in these trying times. The fairways are very well maintained but it can get very windy there. The windiest round I ever played was at Kahuku. Since they are currently closed for the winter, they flew in the chef here to prepare traditional Korean dishes!Although, very different from the last pop up with the bone broth soup, this pop up will cater to all palates. There's kalbi, Mandoo & kimchee soup, spicy pork and a beef sukiyaki type dish. All meals are set for two and come with unlimited banchan (sides). Our wonderful waitress, Neesa (sp?) got us situated with the menu and described the dishes. Since my friend doesn't eat pork, we decided to get the bulgogi dish, which is like a sukiyaki bowl! After taking our order, she brought out a portable stove top and our banchans and rice. Shortly following was our hot pot. Which is this massive bowl filled with goodies. She explained to us to try and move the meats and veggies around the ring since the middle gets hot and underneath is actually noodles. If we had left it, the noodles would've gotten all burned and stuck. What I found helped us to push everything around and actually cook the meat in the middle. Like a little grill. The meat was well marinated and so soft!!! Lots of Alii and enoki mushrooms, green onions, bean sprouts and glass noodles. All drenched in a nice shoyu sugar type broth. It was perfect for this chilly day! The banchans I believe change daily or weekly. Todays were odeng (fish cake), kimchee, green onion w/miso & root in gochujang. All delicious and so comforting. Will most definitely come back to try that Mandoo kimchee stew & spicy pork!!! Go and check them about before chef heads back to korea at the end of February. It's worth the far drive!!"

Perfect cuts no dead spots great sand in the bunkers a well architected course. This course could be a four when all the bunkers and greens are in perfect condition. I rate this at a a three which is pretty good. The greens were punched about 4 weeks ago and in very good shape. A little Woolley but compared to many of the muni courses much better. The fairways are in good shape for the most part and the bunkers are greatly improved considering not maintained during COVID. The layout is average with the 10th hole and green an example of a drunk bulldozer driver carving out the hole. The fairways all slope to the right on this par five then you come to the hole that is greatly sloped to the left with bunkers on the right. Just a little screwy.Of course this course has the best and I do mean the best ocean views on 13 an 14 on Oahu and are rated the best on all US military courses so a must play just for them. The little cafe is great for breakfast or lunch. You must take your own ice or refreshments out since there is only jugs of cold water dispensers available during play. Though private coolers etc are disallowed they don't enforce it. The 9th hole Halfway house is still closed. Again you'll need to bring anything you need on the course. And if you spray you shots you will need plenty of amo as the rough is really rough. And the ocean holes all have marked hazard stakes but the ones with green tops are considered sensitive areas and you are not allowed to enter. Years ago they found buried human remains there. So for the sake of respect stay out. Overall I enjoy the course have been playing it for about 30 plus years. So I've seen really great conditions to very poor. Right now it's pretty good. But once the rains start hitting it the second hole in particular becomes a 6 to 1 inch deep lake through much of the fairway. I'm retired military so easy to get on and through the gate. Access is hard or challenging without a military sponsor. And in predictable because the US Military does reduce or stop all non DoD access at times."

My favorite thing about this course is that an active runway shared by commercial jets and military aircraft wrap around the golf course. So when you're on the #6 hole, jets taxiing can see golfers as they are about to tee off. It's so cool. But one thing I get excited for is on the back 9 where you get a good view of the takeoff runway where pairs of F-22 Raptors are taking off. This 18-hole course has two tee boxes Men's and Women's that play to 5,976 yards and 5,551 yards, respectively. At current time, this course does not have a "pro shop" or restaurant. There is a golf specialty store stocked with new and "experienced" golf equipment called "Roots and Relics". The course's flat layout makes it easy to play for golfers of all-skill levels. This course was named after an American professional golfer, Theodore "Ted" Makalena, who was born and raised in Hawaii and the first Hawaii born professional to win the Hawaiian Open (now Sony Open in Hawaii) at the Waialae Country Club. This was his only professional win that occurred on October 30, 1966 where he beat professionals Billy Casper and Gay Brewer. He unfortunately died at an early age (34 years old) after a swimming accident just two years after this historic win. As you travel down Waipio Point Access Road enroute to the course, you'll see the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility. This facility is home to Pearl Harbor's "Ghost Fleet". Because this facility is a graveyard for ships, its close proximity to the sparse fairways can give you a feeling of eeriness and distraction.I find it a bit odd that this bare bones golf facility is named to honor a former popular Hawaiian athlete. This will allow you to use their facilities that generally includes their sports, fitness, and dining facilities. Oahu Country Club (OCC) was founded in the early 1900's and first started out as a 9-hole links in 1907 and extended to the full 18-hole course in 1913. Located in Nuuanu Valley just off Pali Hwy, this course is surrounded by luscious green mountains and can also view the Pacific Ocean.I first came to OCC for a company Christmas party many years ago. Country clubs are known for their prestigious, high standards where they have a dress code. I recall needing to dress up and our branch manager requested the men to wear a long sleeve shirt and coat.Recently, I came back to OCC to celebrate a colleague's surprise retirement party. I was shocked and honored to have received an invite as I only worked with her for a few years. Her husband sent out invites and coordinated with us via text and her daughter sent us a postcard to save the date.Driving into OCC was a very pleasant experience. It was misty with a slight drizzle and the grounds were wet. For visitors, you need to park at the lower level as the ground level stalls are marked as reserved. We had a private room that sat about 40 people that overlooked one of the putting greens. It was still drizzling, and I was able to catch a glimpse of a rainbow. This function was well-organized where we had to submit our meal order ahead of time. We were given salmon/shrimp or steak, where I selected steak. There were 2 servers who took care of us for the evening. They were professionally dress in all black attire. We were also provided appetizers of shrimp, fish and vegetable tempura with dipping sauce on the side. I selected fish and pumpkin tempura, which were both delicious. I was impressed with the tempura dipping sauce - flavor was spot on.Next, the green salad was served to us, and it was fresh and refreshing. I enjoyed their house dressing that was an Oriental, sesame based creamy dressing. The salmon/shrimp dinners were first delivered and then came the steak dinners. For those who selected steak, we were given a card to place in front of us during check-in. This allowed efficiency and the staff didn't need to ask which entrée we selected. My steak dinner was massive and impressive. It was charcoaled grilled until perfection and it was executed so well - - from the seasoning to cooking. To my delight, it was still red in between and the steak really reminded me of dining at a high-end restaurant. Yes, the steak was that good. It was accompanied with scalloped potatoes and asparagus spears. For dessert, we were served the OCC bread pudding, which was rich and delicious. I loved the creamy vanilla sauce on top. By this time, I was tapped out so after taking a few bites, I asked for a box to take home as breakfast for the next morning.Service was outstanding the staff were attentive to our needs. The only set back that I witnessed was their audio system. The guest spoke from the podium and the portable microphone resembled those outdated ones I recall back in the 80's-90's. It didn't work so the guest removed his face mask and spoke loudly so all could hear. Overall, another memorable experience at OCC where it's an honor to be invited to participate. I don't golf but do appreciate the finer things in life. I had a great time at OCC where I enjoyed their facility, delicious meal, and service. It would be an honor for a return visit, and I wouldn't hesitate to RSVP to another event at OCC."
