Breanna D. "Monthly fees are reasonable... (about $65/month/class), classes once a week for one hour for most options.... but you must factor in total costs of everything else required to attend. Required performances every 6 months... or there is a high possibility of being kicked out of the class. Few "non-performing" class options. This is the notice you receive prior to the performance signup cut off:Cost:  $50 Performance Fee, $85-$105 Costume, Hip Hop shoes $65 (same style as last year) and $25-$35 Tickets plus tax*When calculating total costs please factor in monthly tuition, dance shoes, tights, make-up, hair, other optional costs such as dance portraits and show shirts.(Ya--- you have to pay for your own tickets to watch your child)Parent Participation:  We require parents to participate backstage in 5 hour shifts during the show.  If you cannot help during show dates, please indicate that when you sign the contract so we can give you a different volunteer assignment leading up to the show dates.  (Ummm.... I'm paying you and you are requiring me to work for you? Nope.)Also, for each of the classes (age groups) you need a specific color of uniform; leotard for ballet or jazz, tshirt for hip hop, etc. This is not what is worn in a performance and not part of that costume fee. The shoes and uniform for regular weekly classes adds up quickly... and can only be purchased through PDD (as it has their logo on the merchandise). They need to adjust prices and be more flexible on where outfits are purchased from (allow students to buy any type of leotard, tights, shoes within regulation from any seller/store). Dont require colors for age groups.... and $65 for hip hop shoes for a performance for a child is ridiculous.Only positive: teachers are friendly and my daughter enjoys her classes. But the cost brings the rating way down..... I cant afford for my daughter to have this hobby."

Angela M. "The Honolulu Zouk community of dancers is amazing. You can go in as an absolute beginner or as a trained dancer and they will have a class to challenge and inspire you. Kimberly Loo, the head mistress of zouk in Honolulu, is an extraordinary dancer trained in everything from ballet to contemporary to samba to a billion partner dances and BOY can she dance. She will dance your cheeks off. Face and butt. And that doesn't really make sense, but when you witness her movement you'll understand.Kim also has a core group of amazing instructors including Mahina, who is my role model for females who lead. I want to be Mahina when I grow up. If you have zero experience dancing, or have never danced with a partner, there's beginner level classes where you'll feel welcome and supported. They also ship in jaw-dropping guest instructors from around the globe several times a year, bringing the best in zouk right to your front door at a very reasonable price. If you don't like to touch people or be touched, this is not the dance for you. If you love connection and flow and an inclusive, open-minded community, try it! They also have beginning adult ballet and non-partnered choreography classes. And if you are interested in performing? Honolulu Zouk offers LOADS of performance opportunities. Loads. Ranging from festivals to studio performances to Ala Moana centerstage and more. They have Sunday evening classes at Polearity Studio at the edge of Chinatown and also offer several classes throughout the week at various locations. Their basic classes are, I believe, $100 for a 10 class card or $15 drop-in, they offer student discounts, and package deals for visiting instructors. I feel I have been extremely useful with this review. The end."

In fact, here's a discount!"Me: "My hero!"Because the world has been a mean bully for so long, it has been 5 years since I've stepped foot in a dance studio, and 10 years since I've stepped foot in a ballet studio. I was a little bit rusty. That's ok though. There are two classes here for beginning and intermediate adult classes. The beginning class really is for someone who has never danced before. However, I benefitted from taking one to remind myself of the basic technique. The intermediate class more or less contains retired dancers like myself and those who have started dancing and have been taking classes for about a year. The studio is located on the first floor of the building across the street from the police station. There is plenty of parking available at the roof of the building, but the garage is a little difficult to maneuver. They have changing rooms and restrooms with water fountains and a small kitchenette area if you are trying to fit this class into your busy schedule. If you don't have the right clothing, they are pretty lax about letting you take the class regardless. If you show up to a daytime class though, they have a store open to buy clothes/shoes. They have three clean well equipped studios with pianos, portable barres, and spring floors. Us adults don't have a lot of options where we want to dance, but this is by far the best option I've found in my 3 years living on the island. It doesn't hurt to just drop in and try a class or two."

Give you a new purpose in life?Join Kim's Heels Class Hawaii at the Aloha Dancesports Center! I've been going to her heels dance classes since 2018 and her classes are always so encouraging and fun! Before pandemic, I use to attend her beg/int heels, beg jazz, beg hip hop, and neo burlesque classes. Now during pandemic 2021, Kim only offers beginner hip hop class, beginner R&B, intro heels, beginner heels, and intermediate heels for now. You can follow her pages on Instagram @heelsclasshawaii @beghiphophawaii for the latest updates and class videos. These classes are for adults in all different levels of dancing, from no experience to with expert experience!Parking is located in front of the Ohana Hale Market Place, only an 1 minute walk across from the studio. The door is located behind the building and it will say Aloha DanceSport Center, right next to this pet food store called 'Naturally pet'. I went inside one time and was greeted by at least 5 dogs and 2 cats (great customer service haha) I think I was talking to the store owner and said he owns like 12 dogs in there. How the class process goes is that you first message Kim through her Instagram pages to reserve a spot of the class you want, once Kim approves then you can send payment. When class day comes, you come in and stretch on your own then she will begin class and start breaking down the choreography step by step. DONT FORGET TO BRING YOUR WATER AND KNEE PADS (for heels class)! Also a sweat towel because it can get hot too haha.Note: Im a VERY slow learner but with the help of Kim breaking down and repeating the choreo over and over. It helps build your muscle memory faster throughout the hour! I hope to see you guys in class and don't be shy to say hi to me!(If you're planning to take Heels class on a regular, invest on buying Burju shoes! Don't get me wrong, Zumba can be fun, but Tiare Fit is a nice blend of Polynesian and Hip Hop dancing, with easy to learn routines that give you a great work out. It's similar to hot hula but with more of a Tahitian flare, so you really work your legs and abs. I never thought I would try Tahitian at all, but this place makes it so enjoyable, with its mix of music styles and dance moves. My friend tried to get me to come for one year and she finally convinced me. I do not regret one bit of it. I tend to be on the anti-social side until I get to know you, but these girls have definitely become part of my family. There is no judgement no matter how good or bad you are at dancing. Everyone is there to support each other and have a good time and a great work out. The atmosphere is so positive, you can never leave angry, only inspired."

Angela M. "I do not currently take dance classes.I do not currently have my children enrolled in classes.HOWEVER.If I were to do either of those two things, which are probably going to happen in the not-too-distant future, I would absolutely 1000% choose 24-VII studios as they are incredible.I have a dance degree (was an EXCELLENT idea back when I lived at home and my dad cooked my food for me and paid my phone bill) and several years of choreography/teaching under the old belt. Therefore I feel I am an astute judge of quality. I have also watched a lot of youtube. BAM. Dance expert.24-VII danceforce has their shiz together. I attend the dance concerts just for fun because they are AWESOME. Choreography is on point, dancers are well trained, performance quality is out of this world, and it is a glorious experience every time. "You love dance, aren't all dance concerts glorious?"NO. No they are not. Yes, there are other studios on the island that are decent. But there are also other dance studios that are just... weak sauce. And sitting through a performance by one to those studios is like having your eyeballs stabbed with hot pokers and you feel like "Why? WHY DOESN'T ANYONE SEE HOW PAINFULLY BAD THIS CHOREOGRAPHY IS?!!!" WHY??!!!! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?!!!"But I digress. The students training at this studio are clearly expected to work hard and pour their whole hearts into their dance. The bar is very high, which is as it should be. You could send your child to a warm, fuzzy, low-key studio where he/she will feel like winner because everyone is a winner in their tepid, mediocre routines. OR you could send them here and they will actually end up good. Really good. Even great. And what's the point in doing something if you don't want to be great?Fun?You know what's fun?Being great.Don't get me wrong, I know several parents with small children at 24-VII who are having a blast. I've also heard other parents complain about "the environment" to justify why their kid is enrolled at some subpar studio. What about the environment? You mean the excellence? Is that what you don't like? Afraid of your kid having competition because he/she might, gasp, not be the best? Please. This review is turning out more negative than I intended it to. I think I have low blood sugar. At any rate, I have incredible respect for 24-VII. In fact, I have a secret dream to rebuild my dance chops and dance with them someday. I figure if I put on enough makeup and stand in the back, I'll blend and no one will be all "Good Gods, who is that middle-aged woman dancing with those young things?!!"Lots. Lots of makeup. And maybe it would help if I had abs. And, like, a masquerade mask.I need to stop writing.24-VII is awesome and anyone serious about dance should train there and their concerts are the best. Yes."

Seriously though that class is a full body workout and super fun! I recommend it to EVERYONE!Parking - street or structure parking. Someone wrote a review about parking and thank you for that cause if not we wouldn't been lost. Since the class is from 7-8:15pm we ended up paying $2.50, cash only! So don't forget to bring $$$!! You're in Chinatown after all!! To get into the studio, YOU HAVE TO CALL! My friend and I was so confused we almost walked around the building 2x but then she found their IG and called. They lock the doors cause y'all know how it be out in the streets, late at night there. So make sure you call to let them know you're downstairs then they'll let you in. They also have a special key card for that floor so literally only people going to that floor have access. They also have a pole dancing class too so maybe that's why... anywhoooo, When we called the guy was super nice! He let us up the elevator and told us we were doing the right thing and called. Let us up, took our temp, filled out some paperwork. We washed our hands and we made our way to the floor. The instructor came and then class started. The instructor started off by introductions, which was nice!!!!! Since it was my first time I was a bit shy BUT my friend and I take a heels class that's a bit more intimate so that kinda broke me out of my dance shyness. This twerk class is more like, we in the club, socially distanced AND since it's all females, this was even better!!!! Everyone was literally shaking their asses, not giving a rats about anything. No judgments about nothing AND hyping each other up. Also, if you needed help, the instructor came and showed you how to do it. I think my fave part was the warm up cause you really get to stretch and feel the music! I honestly loved this class so much and honey for the price, $13 is such a gooooooood price, you bet I'll be there next week baby!!!! ;) Also, might I just add the instructors booty is goals and it's so intimidating!!!!! You can just imagine yours doing the same thing, even if it's not LOL!! Also, you think you're not doing the moves but because you don't have the same butt shape and thickness, it doesn't feel it. However, it definitely is. I love that you learn twerk moves, but at the same time in the end they actually choreograph a dance for you to a twerk song!! I did research and more research and found Boogie Down Productions. It seems to be one of the few classes for adult beginners/intermediate dancers. In my head I'm advanced, but my body is like "no child, you is a beginner."I made good on my word and have been going to hip hop dance classes at Boogie Down Productions. Its an hour class and it goes by like it is 15 minutes. It seems we've got a little dedicated cohort so you'll also meet some new friends. This is a dance class where you learn choreography, but there are other exercise dance classes they offer, as well as, a number of different styles of dance offered. It's easy to drop in, we learn a new dance every week, so you don't have to worry that you won't know what's going on. I'm still figuring out parking, as it isn't the easiest place to find street parking, but I believe it I come right before class gets out parking will open up from the class right before. If you love to dance, I highly recommend just dropping in for a class. These classes are one of the best if not THE best learning classes I have ever seen, and I have been around dancing for 15 years taking classes in many different genres from top teachers globally. If you want to learn to dance, Tunui's is the place. The teacher is extremely experienced and knowledgeable, extremely patient and supportive, and is an amazing teacher and an amazing dancer. The halao is very nice. The dancers have a high level of skill and win competitions, locally and nationally. And, learning is fun here. It is light and joyful and jovial, and everyone has fun. I joke and say that Tunui can teach chairs to dance, but honestly, I wouldn't doubt it. I came in as an older dancer, stiff, without proper technique, and in some years in his classes. I can make proper movements now.I also see visitors who come in for 1-2 months to Honolulu specifically to study with Tunui and their dance tremendously improves. Just the experience of being in the middle of a group of really fantastic dancers and soaking that in is so memorable and helps you to dance better. Tunui's dancers are precise. If you watch the movement carefully, there is no sloppiness, the movement is very crispy clean and elegant. It is an amazing accomplishment.I forgot to mention: halao performs and competes, for people who want that, you will practice and learn competition solos. Also Tunui is famous for his costuming. The classes teach everything you need to know to dance better and to perform - posturing, acting, feeling, telling a story with the movement, tricks for performing solo competitions, and of course, training to be a member of a halao and perform as "one". Most wonderful place to learn and even venture into more performing and even professional dance career. Quite a few dancers turn professionals."

I've taken aerial yoga a few times at different studios, but it's been awhile. I checked in with a very nice front desk receptionist and went upstairs to class. I completely didn't read the class description properly and upon arrival realized that I was not actually taking aerial yoga, but instead a silks class where you learn different footholds and positions. Totally cool but a seriously difficult workout! I learned a bunch of new things I'd never tried before and broke out into a sweat trying each new position. Just learning how to wrap the silks around my foot literally made my brain hurt. It was like doing complex math for an hour! The instructor remarked that my body would hurt for the next few days and boy, do I believe her!I decided the take the next class which was an actual aerial yoga class. I double checked lol! This was totally what the doctor ordered as it was the perfect way to stretch out my body after using all the muscles I rarely engage in my regular gym and yoga practice. Chris was my instructor and I absolutely loved his clear instructions, warmth and positivity! The class went by so quickly that I wished it was 90 minutes instead of 60. The stretching was AMAZING and as I enveloped myself in the silk hammock for savasannah I knew this was the perfect way to start my next year around the sun! Totally looking forward to taking BOTH aerial classes in the future and challenging my body to always try new things and have fun!"

She was very quick with responding to my inquiries and I was able to arrange a private class for my friend and me at Magic Island. Hula on the beach...can there be anything more awesomely Hawaii than that? The meeting location was clearly indicated so it was easy to find and Sarah was even early for our lesson. She was great about offering suggestions on where to hold the class (comfort, view, etc.) and had the lyrics to all three of the songs I had inquired about printed up for us too.For the next hour, my friend and I got a dance tailored to our dancing experience/ability (I have danced on and off since I was 5 yrs old and my friend had NEVER done hula in her life) and I can't believe that we were taught an entire song in only an hour! We got the video recording add-on and Sarah provided a tripod that works with cameras and phones so it was easy to record the dance. The video is going to be so handy to review when I get back home :)I can't recommend this enough, especially since this will be much better souvenir of your vacation than a tiki doll or a pineapple mug :-P"

Jamie M. "This review is a bit tardy, but I am finally coming around to giving some well-deserved praise. We found this place through Yelp when we were scouting a dance instructor for our wedding first dance. I have to hand it to my fellow Yelpers for the stellar recommendation; Ed was great. He is clearly passionate about what he does, and he and his wife Juliet are very accommodating. We have very busy schedules, and they rescheduled our sessions multiple times and met us in the evenings after work and even on weekends. We would be exhausted and many times did not even feel like going to dance lessons, but then we would end up having so much fun. Afterwards, we were always glad that we went. At times, it was very stress-relieving and even calming to go in. This is largely due to the fact that Ed and Juliet are such nice people, and they make dancing fun. Just to provide some context, we attended private dance lessons about once a week for a couple of months before our wedding. We had no real prior dancing experience. I usually feel really uncomfortable dancing. But Ed was very patient and went through basic dance steps just to get us more used to things. After we finally picked a first dance song, he practiced everything from the entrance through to the end of the dance. He tailored the moves to us and our song. There were many times that we just changed things so that they just felt more comfortable. We did not get a one-size-fits-all type of dance. That makes it all the more special.Just so you know Ed used to be a dance instructor for, I think, Arthur Murray before he had his own studio, so in going with Ed, you get Arthur Murray instruction but for a much more reasonable price. Due to an injury, he cannot dance as much as he would like to, but he often times would still show us how to do certain dance moves by bringing in Juliet to our dance session. I think Ed is due for a surgery, so he will be up and running again. However, the bottom line is that the best instructor is one who can teach people who do not know how to dance how to dance. And Ed is very good at that."

Then Shimmy Fitness is just for you!The Shimmy Fitness instructor, Malia, will teach you how to pop those hips, shimmy those hip scarves, undulate that stomach, and move that veil. You'll be sweating and feeling great in no time. By the next day, you should definitely be feeling the ache. But that's a good thing! The class style is that of a monkey see monkey do kind. She starts the music, shows you some moves, and you follow her lead. She'll take you through the basic moves for that song, and then she'll step it up a notch by doing it all in one movement and perhaps a little faster. One of my favorite parts is when we get to dance with the veils. No, it's not like a wedding veil, it's more like a super-thin drape that you get to dance with. The veil-dancing will definitely work out those arms. You'll be wishing you were back to only hip movements! But then again, once you see your toned arms, you'll be glad you get to dance with a drape!Individual hour-long classes are $15 each, while a Shimmy Pass with 4 classes on it is $50. You get your first class for free either from checking in on Yelp, or going to the Shimmy Fitness website: http://www.shimmy-fitness.com/Shimmy_Fitness/FREE_1st_class.html, or by just calling up Malia and asking her about it. If it's your first time going then arrive 10 minutes prior to class so you will have time to register. When you do decide if you would like to buy a pass, Malia accepts credit cards, cash, or check. Aerobic shoes/dance shoes are allowed, but so are bare feet. Wear cool, comfortable workout clothing, bring a water bottle, and get ready to sweat!Yelp365-#020/365"

Carmela L. "We had a private hula lesson for our bachelorette party and it was such a great idea. Ashley was great at explaining the feet and hand movements and did it all with a beautiful smile. Definitely recommend this for a group activity."

J Kainoa T. "I have practiced yoga with hundreds of instructors and Murti Howard and Larina Hawkins are my favorite.Although only a minor reason why you should continue your yoga practice here, the fact that the first three classes are free is kickass cool. The duo teach hatha yoga five days a week in a breezy, open-air classroom at the Waikiki Community Center. Parking is free at the center (enter from the Liliuokalani side of the block, not the Paoakalani side of the block). The entire second-floor classroom floor is covered with a thick spongy surface that you can put your yoga mat or or borrow one of the ones Murti or Larina provide. There is very little chance of slipping or hurting yourself. Maha Fusion also provides straps and blocks, which they use in every class to support good form. The class is gentle, restorative, and yet designed with pose progression such that even students who have been practicing for decades will find their edge of challenge.Murti's yoga heritage goes back to Rodney Yee, whom I believe is a master of restorative, restful poses, but Murti also folds in traditions of ashtanga, a more acrobatic and spectacular yoga practice. We also use methods employed by those who practice kundalini yoga, micro yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar yoga and vinyasa yoga. Murti is an avid read in yoga theory and makes his students well aware of the vast survey of yoga teaching through commentaries and the sutras. Go Rumi!Larina is a dancing yogini! Larina teaches classes in conjunction with Murti, and usually heads up the Saturday class. Her hatha-based practice folds in elements of ecstatic dance. Students in her class will find themselves moving about the classroom in addition to engaging in a challenging vinyasa flow. Larina has a very healing and gentle spirit about her and the sharpest eye when it comes to adjusting students' form. With the slightest touch or brush of her fingertips she will have you executing poses with the accuracy. What I love the most about this practice is the flexibility is brings to my own practice. I am an athlete and strong and experienced in practice, yet there are days when my body, like anyone's is not having it, has had it, and does not want me to be there. Those are the days that I am thankful I practice with these two. I am never made aware that I suck that day and never am I guilted into going beyond what I should be doing that day. Larina and Murti break down each pose is broken down into krama or various expressions of a pose, from the slightest expression of a pose to its grand finale, and each student is invited to find a variation of the pose that suits them that day. There are some days when I am a full wheel and some days I am a man on his back with just his hips raised off the floor a little. The students in the classes range from 30-something to 70-somethings, from surfers and athletes to grandmas and grampas. The rapport between students is remarkable, and is probably due to the fact that in every practice the students engage in partner yoga whereby they assist one another in obtaining the proper form or in engaging in more challenging poses with the support of another person. It is common to for students at the center to greet one another with hugs and kisses on the cheek. At least several times a year there are vegetarian potlucks after classes on Sunday where students catch up, and every month there is a meditation group held at the beach. In sum, Murti and Larina have created a yoga community.I recommend practice at Maha Fusion very much for the novice practitioner and those who have been practicing for a long time."
