"Shopping for a used book...My mom is an avid reader. I'm not sure what she's read already, but I know that she likes mysteries and suspense. By visiting Book Off at Pearlridge Center, I accomplished many things:1. Cooled off from the October heat - I really appreciated the air conditioning2. Got a great deal for $13. Entered the drawing for $500 by emailing my receipt to Pearlridge Center4. Got a gift for mom5. Wrote another Yelp reviewThanks to Daniel C. and Peter Y. for a fun adventure! Thank you, Peter, for the chauffeur service! Don't you enjoy the free parking at Pearlridge Mall?LOCATION: by TJ Maxx on the ground level of "Uptown Pearlridge" SERVICE: Polite, friendly, and efficient"
"Booksale in Honolulu's Ward Village...If you remember the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale, you'll like Village Books and Music at Ward.Every year, I used to look forward to the sale at McKinley High School's cafeteria. Browsing though the countless tables of books, I'd find many treasures such as cookbooks, travel books, and novels that I've always wanted to read. The only bad thing about the booksale back then was the heat. Uhg. Summer in Honolulu without air conditioning is torture. This year, the booksale is so much better! Located at the former site of Pier 1 Imports, the Friends of the Library have a new home! It's clean, spacious, well lit, and AIR CONDITIONED!!! PLUS... There's free, covered parking in the structure! The parking entrances are on Queen Street and Auahi Street! It doesn't get much better!Everything is neatly organized by catagory. For example, children's books, audiobooks, CDs, and DVDs are to the left of the front door. Artwork and collectables are to the right. Fiction is straight ahead while everything else is in-between. Refer to the handy map for your favorites.Just remember that the sale runs until August 2021 and that they're closed on Mondays. I'll be back soon with my mom... She'll enjoy the experience and the low prices!"
"Supporting local...Look no further to this one stop shop and to support all things local just head on down to House of Mana Up newest location at South Shore Market in Kaka'ako as I'm super excited with this super convenient location with lots of free covered parking and personally just a great area to shop.Filled with all things completely local as beside each item is a little bit of information from the maker bringing the feeling the love and additional knowledge who you're supporting behind it all.Get ready to see the wide variety of products available here from health and beauty, snacks, and items to fill your home as I got some Jules & Gem, Hawaiian Soda Co, and Bradley & Lily just to name a few is a great deals. The staff here are so friendly and knowledgeable even offering a taste of Hawaiian Cassava Chips from our own 'Ulu Man...yum, having so many types of products all in one area without driving everywhere makes shopping and exploring the islands is as easy as Mana Up.Thank you!"
"Nothing like a good book...Located across Marks Building as I was done with mailing a box next door at the post office i noticed this shop and decided to explore and walking in you take your shoes off right at the door to browse which I absolutely loved as it felt so calming.Recently we just added a bookshelf at work and thought that this would be a great place to find something to add for the kids as there's nothing like reading to explore your mind versus the table though yes it's reading as well but holding a book physically is what our kids are missing out and sadly so is the publication and book shops.Love to support local and keep reading going with so much here that offers various books that I do love but looking for the kids is so much more fun and there was so much here and narrowed it down to something for the teeniest cuties that i hope will enjoy as much as i did, don't forget that there's a 10% off discount with a Yelp check in which a wonderful deal as the price good book is priceless.Thank you!"
"Shopping in Honolulu Chinatown...Sometimes, I just need to get some lucky red envelopes. The envelopes seem to make monetary gifts a bit more special. I usually give them as gifts to my nieces, nephew, and friends for the New Year. (This year's envelopes had cute piggies on them for the Year of the Pig!) At other times, I might give a red envelope in a birthday card or as a wedding gift. I found this store, W. H. Hing, at the Chinatown Cultural Plaza (on the ground floor) in Honolulu. It's convenient because it's surrounded by many Chinese restaurants. When you look at the restaurant, Tai Pan Dimsum, W. H. Hing is right next to it - on the right hand side, near the Kuan Yin statue. This shop also has Chinese newspapers, clothing, trinkets, snacks, videos, CDs, umbrellas, incense, souvenirs, and more! Just take a look! You may find something that you didn't realize that you need!"
"Shopping in Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii...My friend, Angel, wanted to return something that she had purchased at the University of Hawaii (UH) volleyball game at the Stan Sherrif Center. She knew that the UH Bookstore would be able to do the transaction, so I went along to take a look...Wow...The Bookstore seems gigantic and modern now! The choices for merchandise have really expanded! There are more products, styles, and designs for everything! For example...The clothing selection... from sweatpants to t-shirts and hoodies... gosh... we never had so much to choose from!Another observation was the accessories department. I don't think bucket hats were popular back in the day... I also saw beanies - which are hardly worn in the 50th State, but they would make great conversational gifts! The clear bags for stadium use were tempting. I like the UH logo... the logo was also on a Santa Hat!Well... I did buy some gifts... I know now where to shop if I need more!P.S. they also carry Eden In Love reusable tote bags - even a crossbody version!"
"Absolutely love this book store and the owner, Sam. She curates the best books and host amazing events!"
"Shopping in Honolulu, Hawaii...Once in a while, Donna O. sends me photos of things I might like. For example, pictures of Hello Kitty face masks, scrub tops with cute prints, and Cony items (the white bunny from Line Friends). Thanks, Donna! Most recently, Donna sent me a photo of Line Friends items at the Ala Moana Shopping Center location of Barnes & Noble. I thought that I would be smart and go to the Barnes & Noble at Aloha Tower Marketplace for a better selection of Line Friends products. This Aloha Tower Marketplace location is closer to me than the Ala Moana store. However, parking is in a paid lot. Luckily, I found metered street parking on Bishop Street about a block away and walked over. This particular Barnes and Noble is more like a bookstore for Hawaii Pacific University (HPU). There were many items with the school logo: a shark! Isn't that kind of cool? Besides having books and school supplies, this Barnes & Noble carried HPU Aloha Shirts, t-shirts, jackets, hoodies, coffee mugs, key chains, lanyards, koozies, face masks, caps, etc. There were no Line Friends products. Shucks!I did enjoy the air conditioning, pleasant decor, and looking at the cute plushies, greeting cards, and other merchandise. I guess I will have to go to the Ala Moana Shopping Center location of Barnes & Noble for Cony items. I did look online, but I didn't want to pay for shipping. I should just bite the bullet because online shopping is more convenient in the long run, right?"
"Book stores are magic places. Everything inside transports you to another place and time. Skull-Face Books & Vinyl quietly opened in the Chinatown area of Honolulu in Mark's Garage on the Bethel Street side of the building. It's in close proximity to awesome venues like The Arts, Hawaii Theatre, J. Dolan's, The Lei Stand, etc.; basically this is an easy addition to any evening out in that area. It's the same owner as The Last Bookstore in L.A. and has a vibe not seen before here. "The best in deep, dark, weird, or hard books, music, and film." Beyond that, there is truly something for every age and interest. The store is open with high ceilings and bright lighting, and arranged artfully yet organized. There is even a welcoming couch, I would assume to take a load off and peruse some books. The comical section names are worth discovering for yourself. As an avid Tolkien and Star Wars fan, I was delighted to see such wide selections of both. Make sure to check out sub-sections in other areas too, like your favorite pop culture in the arts or music sections. This is an independent store and they sell both new and used items. They also buy used media, check out the store for more information. They have books, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records. One area also has shelves of complete boxed sets of book series, which make great gifts. The store really feels like a pop culture museum as well, with art everywhere. It's the kind of place you could spend hours in if you have the time. Most things are cover priced, but some are priced differently depending on age and condition. I'm so thankful to have a book store like this in town again and look forward to dropping in often. The clerk was friendly and welcoming to talk about the store; don't feel embarrassed to explore without buying something right away. Explore the world, read."

As a kid growing up in da 808, I remembered my love of going to a record store to read comic books, listening and checking out records, & of course checking out the books/magazines.One of my favorite stores was - "Tower Records", as I first discovered this store in Sacramento when I used to go up there every summer to visit my grandma, and I would walk a few blocks from her house to the Tower Records store with my cousins. As a kid, I used to always wonder why Hawaii didn't have a Tower Records store, then somewhere around the late 70's/1980 Tower Records finally made it's way down to the 808! Since that time, Tower Records went out of business in 2006 as they had to file for bankruptcy. So sad that Tower Records is no more. I guess record stores are no longer a common thing to see in the retail industry, as people's behavior changes through the years. There are a lot more different venues to get music, so records & CD's have become kinda irrelevant to the younger generation. Lucky for me, there are still a few stores around that sells stuff that I used to buy as a kid, and - Book Off is a cool store that reminds me of my days as a kid going to the record store.Of course Book Off specializes in "gently used" CD's, DVD's, & other electronics, but if you dig around, sometimes you can find some brand new unopened stuff. The day I was cruising in the Pearlridge area, I didn't even know that there was a Book Off store in the Pearlridge shopping center. I had a little time to kill, so I popped on into the store to check it out.I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but came across a discount section of CD's, so I decided to see if I could find some DEALAGES!Sure enough, I found a few great deals as I ended up buying (2) CD's.If you're looking for a particular CD, or DVD, you might consider checking out the Book Off store at the Pearlridge Shopping center, as they have a lot of great deals.

I really like Friends of the Library organization. I've found great books throughout the many years that I've known of their existence and they're all so cheap! On top of that, this organization actually appreciates teachers and shows their appreciation every year by gifting teachers books that we can choose for our classrooms. It's nice to find a great book and feeling like you're reducing waste by reusing the book instead of letting it be thrown away. Ever since Covid started, I've missed going to McKinley HS to go to the book sales, but I'm glad the friends of the library opened a brick and mortar store in Ward. They've been having sales at Ward for a few years now, in the big space where pier 1 used to be. It doesn't feel the same as McKinley, probably because it's nicely air conditioned now, but I can still find quite a few books I like. The store and the sale also have CDs, records and DVDs if that's your thing. I like that they have a Hawaiian section and that they also sell art. The workers are all really nice too!

Yay! Another House of Mana Up location, right here at South Shore in Ward!Beautifully designed, well appointed, and quite the spacious store, it's filled with products from the Mana Up Cohorts, including the newest, some of which are shown in this "unboxing"!Imagine the joy of browsing the store, curating a thoughtful set of gifts, and delivering a House of Mana Up box similar to the photo (and yes, they have several different sizes) - to someone special, your family, or, yourself! You could also save yourself some time and call on their corporate gift team to help you curate your own client gift box!Imagine the joy of your recipients as they open their gifts! Carefully packaged, along with the bio card of each company, highlighting the story behind their business. The quality, presentation, and value are evident, and you KNOW you're supporting a LOCAL business here in Hawai'i.And the service? Clearly the pride in work quality is evident just in the packaging - I wish I took a picture of all the boxes awaiting pick up! But I also asked many questions of the staff, and all were answered with a smile, and if research was needed, a quick follow up ensued. From home goods, skin and body care, tea, coffee, and specialty beverages, a variety of food and snack products, clothing, and even a huge children's section, you'll surely find something for everyone on your gift list. (And be honest, something or two, just for yourself!)Enjoy browsing, learning about the new products, how and why they were made, tasting (yes!), and shopping up a storm - you'll be glad you stopped by!

Native Books is a wonderful little book shop that features books about Hawaiian history and culture. They carry a wonderful assortment of children's and adult books. Some of the books are written in native Hawaiian, while most are in English. You can find biographies about the Hawaiian dynasties. Children's books carry stories that have been handed down for generations. Many of the books are by local Hawaiians. The shop is cozy. They prefer that you remove shoes after entering. There is also a work space upstairs. They were painting art wall when I visited. The staff is welcoming and knowledgable. They request that you do not bring in food or beverages. The books make perfect gifts and will help preserve Hawaiian culture and language. There is some street parking but it is at a premium unless you get there early. There is also a parking garage across the street.

For a store that has been in the Chinatown Cultural Plaza for at least 30+ years, there's only one review? A superb review I might add!I remember coming to W.H. Hing ever since I was a small kid. My mom would always take me in here before or after dim sum. The set up was a little different than now, but there were shelves of Chinese books and magazines, and a covered section of the store that I was super curious about lol. As the years go by, books lessened and here comes Chinese movies on VCD, and you can even get a copy of movies that just came out in theatres with the pixelated cover photo. Now, the store is a mix of Chinese books, magazines, newspapers, movies, TV series, medicine, figures and statues, red envelopes, decorations, holiday cards, mahjong, and many, many other Chinese related items. Currently, they are selling many different 2020 Chinese calendars. I believe the "covered section" still exists lol! I noticed it in my photos. If you need anything Chinese, W.H. Hing is the place to go! They have an excellent selection of items. It's located in Chinatown Cultural Plaza, next to the New York Life office and Tai Pan Dim Sum. The store is small and really jam packed with things all over the place, so look up, down, all around, and behind and under. The owner has been the same since I can remember. Probably the original owner. It's a cool store, and probably the last of its kind after Dragongate Bookstore has closed across the way.

It seems like forever since I stepped foot on this campus. Luckily, I still remember where everything is. I went to the bookstore at Campus Center to return an item I purchased at the Stan Sheriff Center. They were running a promo where you could get 20% an apparel item. I wanted a Nike Rainbow Warriors shirt, but they only had the green hoodie. They had mostly Champion Warriors shirts. They were ok.The return process was fast and easy. The guy working there just scanned my receipt and had me insert my credit card in the machine. The charge was refunded to my card.

It's not just books...Located right on the curbside of Aloha Tower Marketplace is this shop that's filled with all sorts of items you wouldn't imagine to find as bookstores are basically books of course and various accessories in relating to books though the sign says Barnes & Noble which is more a student supplies shop where it's filled with all things "Sharks" all sorts of outerwear from hats, shirts, decals, mugs, blankets and more along with a bunch of items every students need at their convenience as well.Remember this is part Barnes & Noble so there's a section filled with books of all kinds and a bunch of games...jenga, scrabble and even Monopoly lol! With that being a student does have it's issues...for me there always is and I noticed a section that's all things Essential Oils with individual various scents I was excited and intrigued the variety they have and actually picked up a Pen Diffuser which is nice and portable as you can open one or all four scents (Joy, focus, Energy and Calm) now how cool is that!Staff here is just a delight and told me that it was the first pen diffuser sold lol and they do validate parking (which is free for the first hour) so you can shop guilt free which creates more calmness as I shop and find unique items that makes me find my zen.Thank you!

"As we entered, we were greeted by the boss lady. She spoke Vietnamese to me and then realized, I couldn't understand She then spoke to me in Cantonese , which I understandI told her I was looking for Cantonese DVDs. She pointed to crates of DVDs to choose from. After searching through 4 crates, I was able find a movie I wanted. MayWah was walking through the store and found some Hung Bao ( red envelopes for money giving ). We use them for occasions such as birthdays, holidays and gift givingI like this little shop as they have a variety of items as well as Chinese magazines. It's fun to browse around, as we don't have these type of shops in my town**** The store name is hilarious ****10/23/19"
"Big Kine Fun...Love this new shop in Kaimuki right beside Public Pet as from the storefront doesn't prepare you for what they have available within their walls. Walking in you already feel the vibe here is just fun and festive with a kadomatsu to welcome the new year and bright vibrant rainbow with a disco ball hanging from the ceiling.Browsing around I feel the nostalgia with vintage vibe in the various merchandise along with the local flair that we love is mixed in everywhere from the fūsen gum I grew up eating along with fun stickers that's too cute to use while seeing socks you could wear along with your slippers is genius as get you start your chilly morning with it on that can be removed once it starts to heat up sounds like my kinda vibe. The lei wall threw me for a wow moment and took my breath away, some of the items I did find are quite pricey though this carefully crafted shop does offer a lot of unique find and love that they have it all in one place making it a very big kine fun.Thank you!"
"Located in waipahu in the old Arakawas building..Hawaii CHRISTIAN outlet is a cool small CHRISTIAN Specialty store in Waipahu. Upon entering we had the most friendly GODly welcoming by the owner Melrose. The store has a small lobby foyeur area before you actually enter the store ( Melrose said it is big enough for churches to do fund raising which she opens up to any CHRISTIAN church) The store looks pretty much like a Logos (CHRISTIAN book store in town) they got books .. banners.. shirts.. other CHRISTIAN stuff...etc....This place is so cool it even has a lounging area to have fellowship.. Melrose (the owner) is totally following GOD in opening this store and being very nurturing to anybody who visits. This was a totally blessed time visiting this store and meeting Melrose.... If you are looking for CHRISTIAN stuff or just need somebody to show you LOVE this is the place for you... This store is totally BLESSED!!"
"Previously owned books, music, movies, and more!I had never heard of Idea's before my friend from first grade mentioned it. She had to say it a couple of times before I figured out what it was. One of her missions on this trip from Virginia is to find vinyl records for her daughter - mostly Hawaiian music and songs that we listened to when we were her daughter's age... Haha!Using GPS, we found Idea's in a strip mall between Singer Sewing Machine and One Love Church on Auahi Street. There's a free parking lot right in front! We entered the neatly organized store and easily found the Hawaiian sections for music and books. I even saw an area for comics and movies! My friend found some really great deals! She bought so many records that the cashier gave her a tote bag for free! I think the bag is usually about $6. Whoa! Score!Anyway, I highly recommend Idea's if you are looking for second hand movies, books, and music! Just bring your own bag in case you're just getting a couple of items!"
"Shopping in Mililani, Oahu, Hawaii...I saw Hawaii Gifts on Instagram and wanted to check it out...Located in Mililani Tech Park, follow GPS directions carefully because it will have you making a U-turn when there's an "island" that separates the two directions of traffic. Hawaii Gifts is inside of a shared warehouse. There's a lot of free parking right in front. Inside, it's not air conditioned. Even though the door was open, I stood by a large electric fan...The merchandise includes household items, appliances like rice cookers, personal care supplies, kukui nut Lei, shot glasses, monkeypod crafts, playing cards, postcards, coffee mugs, gigantic rice paddles, footwear, boogie boards, plushies, books, snacks, and more! Remember to look at the Dollar items. Check the expiration dates on the over-the-counter medications. I personally went for a cute beach towel. It's a great gift for my friend who luvs turtles. It was the last one, so I had to get it. One of the workers saw me looking at postcards. She got a stack for me from the back with a different, nicer design! Thanks! When I was checking out, the cashier was so pleasant. She pointed out a few boxes on the floor with free items - I got a few gifts for my friends! LOL!Thank you for a fun shopping experience!"
"Only in MAY and DECEMBER! This place is the warehouse for the books they use in the traveling Scholastic Book Fairs that come to all the schools throughout the year. Twice a year they open up the warehouse to "teachers, librarians, school personnel, book fair chairpeople, school volunteers, homeschool personnel". I'm sure if you're interested, you can fall into one of those categories. DIRECTIONS...You will feel like you're driving in the wrong place. From town, take the H3/Halawa exit and go to the end until it says "Halawa Valley Street" and flip that sharp right turn. Go PAST Iwaiwa St and stay on that winding road, under the H3 freeway until you see "Waiua Place". Turn RIGHT on Waiua Place and then LEFT into Waiua Way. MOST of the items were HALF OFF their already low prices. They had books for Preschoolers all the way up to middle school. My kids don't like electronic books, and sometimes they lose or destroy the books from the library. Now that Borders is gone and Barnes and Noble is slowly disappearing, this is a really great option to stock up on books without breaking the bank. This year I registered online at www.scholastic.com/bookfairs and printed out a coupon for an additional discount so I ended up getting 17 books, 13 pencils and 13 erasers for $40! What a great deal."
"Shopping for books in Kailua, O'ahu, Hawaii...I recently bought a book for my mom from another book store in Pearlridge Mall. The book happened to be the first of a series of five, so, I went on the hunt to find the other four books. After looking through a couple of bookstores, I thought I'd try Bookends on the Windward side. I've driven past this strip mall on Kailua Road with Times Supermarket, Lanikai Juice and Morning Brew surrounding Bookends. You can't miss this bookstore because it's right next to the Kailua location of Donut King. The free shared parking makes this destination a great visit! When I walked into the shop, I felt overwhelmed. There were new and used books everywhere... On the shelves, on the floors, on the tables... There were a few chairs for customers to rest. I also saw racks of postcards and greeting cards. Bookmarkers were hanging neatly on a wall.I need to return when I have more time. I should also ask for help because I felt a bit lost. Haha!"
"Located at the Calvery Chapel of Honolulu on Komo Mai Drive in Aiea, this little bookstore/ Cafe is the perfect quiet little spot to stop in for a snack, quick lunch, and coffees. There's a pretty big parking lot, the bookstore/ Cafe is located to the left just as you enter the parking lot. There's a pretty good selection of Christian books, that I need to look through when I get a chance to visit on my own. My kids enjoy stopping here for a snack after the playground. There are a lot of tables and chairs to sit and relax outside. The prices here are very decent, and everything to eat and drink are great from sandwhiches, to fruits, parfaits, muffins, and then some. This has become one of my favorite spots to visit after playground time with my kids."
"Great bookstore, usually has all the books readily available for pickup throughout the semester. Books can be ordered online and picked up in person, so there's no need to go roaming through the store isles for books. The book store is pretty well maintained. All the store clerks are readily available to assist you if you ever need help finding a particular book. Like most UH bookstores, it is quite difficult to find used books at discount prices, so most people often end up paying full price. ALTHOUGH if yo're in luck there's a second hand book board right outside of the bookstore, with postings from previous owners looking to sell their books. I would think the bookstore personell would contest about these discounted book postings right outside the front door, but i always see numerous postings with a diverse selection of books posted for sale on the board. One of the perks to this store are the discounted beverage prices in comparison to the cafe. I think the energy drinks here are like .50 cheaper than buy from the cafe."
"I've never been to the friends of the library of Hawaii warehouse until today. I've been to their book sales at McKinley and Washington middle several times, though. At their regular book sales that happen during the summer, you can find all kinds of books, CDs and even records. It's definitely a treasure hunt and you can spend hours searching through the boxes of books for interesting finds. Now, with covid, they don't have in person sales. Instead, you can shop online for used books. I can't imagine how much work it is to put this stuff online. The volunteers and staff who work here work hard and are so friendly. Today I was invited to their warehouse to select books for my classroom. :) everyone was so nice and I got like 100 books for free! My students will be so happy! Thank you Friends of the Library of Hawaii!!"
"Shopping at Ward Center in Honolulu, Hawaii...I was walking back to my car when I saw some angels in the window of a shop. I also saw some cool Hawaiian ornaments that would be great to mail to my friends on the mainland... So, I went inside Logos Bookstore...Located on the ground level of Ward Center (near the escalator), there's free parking in the attached structure. I think I've been to the former locations of Logos, but this current location is really nice. The air conditioning, lighting, and layout are very comfortable for a pleasant shopping experience. I enjoyed looking at the merchandise. Besides bibles and rosaries, there are kitchen supplies (like wooden spoons and food containers), bookmarks, tote bags, t-shirts, CDs, DVDs, pens, snacks, mugs, jewelry, and more! When I was making my purchase, I was offered a 15% discount if I got a membership card for $15. Hmmm... Very tempting! I think I'll pass for now and return if I need more gifts!"
"Several years ago when this gift shop was at its original location, Ward Warehouse, we'd frequently stop in picking up locally made gifts or books for family and friends. Back then, this store had a larger footprint than its current relocation to Ward Centre. I remember this one time when my husband and his eldest brother were reading a book about Hawaiian Pidgin English while roaring in laughter. Some of the customers and friendly salespeople joined in with their banter in pidgin and soon everyone in the store was "crackin' up" and saying "Eh, you mento buggahs, you rememba wen...". It has been about 3 years since Na Mea Hawai'i had relocated into Ward Centre in a much smaller and intimate space but their customer service and fine artisan-made gifts ranging from hat bands made with loving hands by Hawaiian feather worker, men's and women's Aloha wear, jewelry with semi-precious stones, lovely wood turned bowls from local wood species to Hawaiian culture and history books. We went into Na Mea Hawai'i to browse but were focused on replacing some locally produced stationery (memo pads) for my brother-in-law. Yeah, he's old school to still use paper and pen to jot down his market lists or appointment reminders instead of inputting the information into his smartphone. Besides, the local memo pads are unique, and we were surprised that after 3 years, my BIL asked us to see if we could get more. Unfortunately, we didn't find what we were looking for but the friendly salesperson, Dawn, offered to speak with her manager about finding the source and possibly bringing in the product. We readily filled out their contact list with hopes that we'd be called when the product is available. Meanwhile, my husband roamed around the store and plopped himself in front of the bookshelves. He found the latest release of the Holy Bible translated into pidgin English which we're considering sending a copy to one of my relatives and several other fun books that made us reminisce about our childhood in Hawai'i. There were lei-making and Hawaiian medicine instructional books which caught my eyes. Hm, I chuckled to myself thinking about how I've changed from looking at artwork and considering how to incorporate the artwork into our home décor or buying apparel and jewelry for career wear to just reading books about Hawai'i's historical perspectives or how-to-make projects ...hm, learning never stops.Anyway, Na Mea Hawai'i is a wonderful gift store that features locally-made products and art that promote the Hawaiian culture. Expect to find culturally significant artwork with vintage and modern tastes as in gallery exhibitions. Many items here are NOT inexpensive trinkets and many items are worth passing on to the family but don't let that scare you away as there are fun and made for daily use items. We're hoping that we'll receive a call back from Dawn about those local memo pads and stationery for my brother-in-law, soon. Supporting this local business supports our Hawaiian culture."
"Getting lost in a book is a place no one else can occupy.Da Shop has such a great selection of books many local including a fantastic children's section. It's been awhile since I've read a good book and this cozy shop makes me want to pick one up again.I did purchase some gifts for book loving friends here and you are able to go to www.dashiphnl.com to pre-order and shop Da Shop online.Getting lost in paradise is a dream, thank you!!"
"A non-profit bookstore in HI Kai! This little gem is such a treasure when you're simply looking for books or magazines to read, books to keep your kids occupied, or just seeking information on something you are researching. The State of HI government-run HI Kai Library opened in Dec. 1973, and for the next 30 years, the HI Kai Lions Club and Nagoya Lions provided monetary donations and cultural artifacts from Japan, respectively. In Aug. 2013, the Friends of the HI Kai Library opened the HI Kai Community Book Store to assist with the library's funding.Prior to the bookstore's opening, there was thought of using unused space on the ground floor of the library for a bookstore. A group of volunteers, including a carpenter and artist, and assisted by students of Kaiser High School and its Key and Leo clubs, spent much time and effort to enclose and enhance the space to make it look like a bookstore. Many of the volunteers, led by the current Manager, Lillian Yoshimura, were retired teachers who sought operational tips from similar bookstores of the Kaneohe and Kailua public libraries. They also hustled for gently used donations of books, cleaned them, priced them, and sorted them for placement on the shelves. Books were categorized and shelved in different areas: children, young adult, instructional books for teachers and home schoolers, test preparation, juvenile non-fiction, adult fiction, biographies, religion, self-help, business, cooking, crafts and games, foreign, etc.In Aug. 2013 and staffed entirely by volunteers, the HI Kai Community Book Store was open! As with any new entity, it took time for the community to learn that a non-profit bookstore had opened. Signs were placed on the library lawn as traffic whizzed by on busy Lunalilo Home Rd. With regular prices ranging from 50¢ to $3 per book, semi-annual sales of 50% off of its entire inventory during a one-week period were held to thank its patrons. This bookstore has been very successful over the years, as it's now known throughout the HI Kai community. Teachers and parents of little kids are especially happy, as well as the community residents! Improvements have been made over the years to tailor its services to the community:· In addition to books, its inventory has expanded to:- CDs & DVDs - all interests of music, books, films, and blank ones.- Vinyl records - popular, classical, and world.- Sheet music for all instruments.- Calendars, greeting cards, puzzles, world and road maps.- Clean and books that look new are placed in an area for gift giving.· Monthly and pop-up sales of 50% off specific categories of books, e.g., biography, history, and military; cookbooks; adult fiction; children's; home and garden; business, etc.· Story telling, sing-a-longs, and other events for children.· Acceptance of magazine donations that are categorized and placed in an area where they are free for the public at their choosing.Note that every item sold is donated by community residents, and all proceeds benefit the HI Kai Library. The bookstore is selective of what is donated, as items should be stain free, no age spots, no torn pages, and is in saleable condition. No encyclopedia or textbook donations. The bookstore was our lifesaver when we were babysitting our grandkids. Not only was it air conditioned so that we could make use of the cool air during the hot summer days, but we loved to take our grandkids there! They would spend a lot of time there, browsing through the many books. And because the cost of the books was so reasonable, we allowed them to pick as many books as they wanted, which they would later donate back to the bookstore once they had finished reading them.Hubby and I have and continue to make good use of the bookstore. Hubby collects vinyl records of the 1950's and '60's, so he periodically checks the offerings and has gotten some deals! He also reads a lot of novels, so he's constantly on the lookout for certain books. I gravitate to the local cookbooks that are out-of-print, books on chess for our grandson, books on HI by local authors, and books on Christianity and travel when I'm doing research.COVID requirements have affected the bookstore's operation. It was closed for 14 months after COVID started in 2020 and reopened in May 2021. Hours of operation are: Mon/Tues 12:30p - 3:30, Wed/Thurs/Sat 9:30a - 3:30p, Fri/Sat closed. Free parking available in the library's parking lot (21 spaces). COVID compliance required: max 6 shoppers in the store at one time, 20-minute shopping time limitation depending on number of people in line, facial masks, social distancing, and use of hand sanitizer. However, with the recent increase in COVID numbers, the bookstore had closed temporarily in Aug 2021 and will remain so until further notice. We look forward to it reopening again when it is safe, and I'm sure others do too! What a great gem in the HI Kai community!"
