I was visiting the 'aina and needed to get my breakdancing fix. My friend recommended me this place so I decided to check out their open session. Here was my experience on a Monday evening (8:30-10).AMBIANCE:Surroundings - Not the most touristy part of Honolulu but it's across a pretty nice apartment complex regardless be cautious. The studio itself is on the second floor. Pretty spacious that's decked out with a mirror and space for about 15-20 people. I got lost at first but after hearing music bumping, I knew I was in the right area. They got mirrors to check yourself.Parking - There's street parking or a parking lot right next door.Customer Service - The open session was pretty fun. I enjoyed the beats and the company. Marc was the main person in charge and he was pretty helpful.TL;DR OVERALL5 Stars. Dancing is always hard, regardless if you're a beginner or not. It can be difficult from mastering a move to creating your art, but what helps if you're in a supportive environment and these are one of those spaces. I encourage people of all ages to check this place out.Advice:* Bring water* Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Attended the free first Saturday class as LCC. Wow! There were only about 8 of us - apparently a result of too large a break from the holidays - but it was lots of fun and an amazing workout! My entire shirt was soaked and sweat was dripping off my hair. I was really worried about being intimidated and just too slow to hang with the class but the instructor was really awesome about watching out for newbies like me, taking the time to call out more complicated moves and generally being really encouraging. And the other students/instructors were really encouraging too, high fiving me when completing something particularly challenging. The energy of this class is nice and high while being warm and inviting too. Parking is free, and there is tons of it. This class only happens once a month in this location, and it is totally worth it!Other classes available in town at both the Waimanu Street and Ward Avenue locations - updates here: http://streetjamzwerkout.blogspot.com/?m=1. Drop ins $5, class passes available.

The story of how I found my way to Boogie Down Productions by Jamila J.On November 12, 2015, I had the honor of seeing Ms. Janet Jackson in concert. Not only did I get to see her, I realized that I danced while her DJ warmed up the crowd, all throughout her set (knowing all the dance moves), and all the way back to my car after the concert was over.I left saying, in January 2016, I will begin taking hip hop dance classes. I did research and more research and found Boogie Down Productions. It seems to be one of the few classes for adult beginners/intermediate dancers. In my head I'm advanced, but my body is like "no child, you is a beginner."I made good on my word and have been going to hip hop dance classes at Boogie Down Productions. Its an hour class and it goes by like it is 15 minutes. It seems we've got a little dedicated cohort so you'll also meet some new friends. This is a dance class where you learn choreography, but there are other exercise dance classes they offer, as well as, a number of different styles of dance offered. It's easy to drop in, we learn a new dance every week, so you don't have to worry that you won't know what's going on. I'm still figuring out parking, as it isn't the easiest place to find street parking, but I believe it I come right before class gets out parking will open up from the class right before. If you love to dance, I highly recommend just dropping in for a class. I believe you will love it, and likely make it a part of your life.

Boogie Down is located in a small building across Waimanu street. The environment here is laid back (anyone can come in for a class) and the workers at the reception aren't always there. Also, NO AC(lots of fans though)! Keeps cost down but it gets hot like an oven! Website needs to be updated more frequently. In order to get a look at the updated schedule you need to visit the honolulu dance studio site. You can also check out their facebook page for specific events happening. You can sign up for classes online as well. I wasn't sure when the last day to sign up for the session rates were so I ended up having to go to the studio and pay. I tried to sign up on a Saturday morning and I had to walk over to the Honolulu dance studio which isn't too far just two streets over. Service was really slow there and a little disappointed that I had to wait an hour just to sign up for one class. Other than that, the classes are great! I signed up for the Spring session Hip hop 1 for around $150. So far I have been to 4 classes and they are great! Love the instructors they rock! Mondays are with Jared and Wednesdays are with Becca. Been to both and love them! Great for beginners of all ages. Just come in and dance!

Get ready to sway your hips and learn how to move your tush like Beyonce. Boogie Down Productions has all the latest pop dance courses to offer. No need to be an experienced dancer like the ones you see on MTV and "So You Think You Can Dance," because the instructors here are incredibly patient and amazing. You will enjoy popping your hips to "All the Single Ladies" and doing the horse dance from Psy's, "Gagnam Style." There's also a sexy R&B dance course that is taught by a young professional dancer. This is the only dance studio on Oahu that offers a K-Pop dance course. The staff at Boogie Down Productions are friendly. They also sell snacks and water, and most of the proceeds from the sell funds their dance competitions. Check out their website, because there are YouTube videos on some of their dance classes. This dance studio is catered for all ages. Young, old, middle aged, or in mid life crisis; Boogie Dance Productions welcomes everyone. The studio maybe small and lacks an air conditioner, but at least you'll learn some cool dance moves and maybe pick up on a bit of swag.

I recently took my two children to the studio. They had been asking to take a hip hop class for awhile and so they are really excited to start. When we arrived, we stood around for about 5 mins while all the instructors and people working behind the desk made eye contact with me but never came to introduce themselves or offer any assistance. I went up to the desk to ask about signing my kids up. One girl gave me a clip board, said full these out and walked away. After signing the forms I went back up to the desk and stood waiting again. I noticed a girl walking around having children sign in. I stopped her and asked "can I give you these?" Her response was "Give me want?" She took the forms and walked away to start the class with two other instructors. Never asked who my kids were, never introduced herself and never invited my kids to join the class. We stayed to watch three girls watch themselves dance in mirror for an hour while the kids, bless their hearts, did their best to follow along. Something they can do at home for free watching YouTube. My husband owns a jiu-jitsu school. We make it a priority to greet all new faces, and make them feel welcomed. Unfortunately, my kids will have to wait until we can find a dance school that has the same priorities.

Great place for hip hop classes in town. It's all drop in basis so you can come when you want to. Different levels and the K-Pop class is really cute and fun! The only issues I had was a couple times I went and the classes were only for an upcoming performance but that usually is just for a week or two. They don't update their website that much but if you follow them on facebook they try to put updates on there.
