Hong Kong Chop Suey

I started going to Hong Kong/Mundelein, shortly after I moved to Mundelein over 30 yrs ago.I moved from Chicago, where you can find excellent food easily.For, probably 2 decades HK had the best food in the North suburbs!Few years back, I noticed there was almost no meat, in meat dishes. Their usually good egg drop soup, didn't have strings of eggs ... but almost an entire egg .. Hard boiled!? Even worse ... their wonderful .. meat filled, peanut butter recipe EGG ROLLS, changed to tiny no meat, no peanut butter, sour, nasty things.Complained to Ling. Gal who managed HK, at the time. She asked curtly, what do you want me to do? Instead of offering money back, or credit for bad food ... said they were made with the wrong cabbage? Yet ... still selling them?? Sad, because she was usually very pleasant.Stopped going there for a long time. Sad, because they're in my neighborhood.After a few years, I tried them again. Old style, good egg rolls were back!!! Soup still bad, meat dishes still lacking in meat, and grease laden?Last week, I ordered 2 orders of egg rolls. Mostly, because everything else has increased in price. Like all fast food places, these days. . . . Looked like the good egg rolls. Turns out, not so much!!?? They were filled with sour cabbage, but no meat, no shrimp, no peanut butter. Just sour cabbage! Again? What's up HK???????Anyway, will not be going back any time soon. Sad ...They used to be excellent.While I'm whining ... What's up with most fast food places, asking for tips!? When, I sit down at a table, receive clean silverware, water, menu's, and fresh coffee, and have my food served to me ... with any extras I require. Then, am checked on several times, to see .. if I need anything. Oh, yes ... and get a doggie bag from wait-person, and then the check. I'M A PRETTY GOOD TIPPER.Now, that most fast food places, pay their employees pretty well, for not doing anything different than they used to, besides pointing to the tip jar? I still have to get in my car, and drive there, wait in line to place an order (or online), and pick up, and pay, and then drive in my car to go home, and unwrap order ... hoping they didn't get it wrong again?!? Tip you ... really! Someone has misinformed you, that you are entitled to tips, for no good reason. Common sense just doesn't seem to exist anymore.FYI ... Servers, used to be paid on a different hourly rate, than everyone else. Employers could pay them, almost nothing per hr. So, they had to provide excellent service, in order to receive a good tip. Just in case your not aware .. TIP means "To insure promotness". Sorry for the rant, but I seem to be asking myself regularly ... what happened to common sense, hard work, pride, truth? Not noticing hardly any of this anymore. Shame!

The buffet is quite ample They have many sections of food American Asian desert fruits You pay as you walk in but you serve yourself and can go back for other food items They pick up the plates after you They walk around cleaning up and around You don't really interact because you serve yourself but you can ask for help if needed The place is big and spread out I never used the rest rooms

This has become my go to place for Chinese food. Last night I had curry chicken and it did not disappoint. Won ton soup was satisfying. The egg roll was crispy and full of flavor. The vegetable almond ding was very nice, better than I expected. Portion size is good, always enough left over for another meal or two.

Horrible service horrible SALTY FOODSI don't know what happened to this restaurant??? They have arrogant people working and the food is beyond disgusting

Had the Kung Poa Beef was disappointed, its supposed to be spiceyit didn't have any at all and was bland, I will continue to go farther down Hawley to Dragon Star !! carry out food I think is much better

Love love love!!! I can't believe it has taken me this long to review this place. So so so many good things! I am a creature of habit though. I always order jumbo shrimp fried rice with extra shrimp, egg rolls and wonton soup. Orrrr BBQ ribs, Mongolian beef, sweet and sour combo, kung boa shrimp fried rice and egg rolls. The inside has been open to dine in since before covid, but it doesn't matter because the food hasn't changed and they are still quick. The prices are still good and that says alot.

The old golden standard of Chinese food in the area. Huge portions and everything is good to great... except the dumplings. They are the thick wrapping with bad pink mystery meat inside. Other than that, can't go wrong.

Pretty good Chinese. No spots to dine in, FYI.. as we did not know this so we just brought to go to a local park. We got 1 veggie and 1 pork egg rolls, which were delicious and filling. Then two lunch entrees.one being chicken lo mean, which was excellent and very moist. Sometimes you get dry, lo mean, and it's awful. This was perfect. Could use some more veggies. The other was the human chicken, and it was good but not great. Next time, I'd get two lo meins.

Since Covid only serve take out but we have been going here FOREVER and they never disappoint.

I've been a customer of Hong Kong Chop Suey for 10+ years. As a family we loved the food. However, my last few orders the food bland. We order different entrees each time and in the past EVERYTHING we ordered was filled with flavor. Not sure what changed, but disappointment wa how everyone in my family felt with the recent orders. In addition, placing orders is efficient, but some of the staff is very rude when picking up orders.
