Hess Bakery & Deli

This is *the* spot for German foods in the Tacoma area and my Mother in law from Baltimore visits at least once a month for her deli, mustard, and bread needs. The soft pretzels are huge and delicious. They had a wonderful amount of Christmas chocolates and holiday items in November and December. This place has the feeling of a family run and family loved business and I hope that never changes.

Clean environment. Accommodating staff. Lots of great fresh European bakery items. Definitely worth checking out and getting your sweet tooth satisfied.

Fresh German salami is delicious. I don't think I'll buy salami at the grocery store again! Pretzels are good, probably better if hot. Gotta have that mustard too. Across the hallway there's a bakery counter/restaurant. That's where you can get sweets. Lots of cakes and pastries! Today the special was Creamy Mushroom soup to go. I was sorely disappointed when I got home. It lacked flavor, barely any mushrooms, and it was watery. Not very appealing! Luckily, I was at home so I salvaged it by adding more mushrooms, seasoning, and a bit of orzo in a pot to recook and thicken. I hope they do serve really good mushroom soup and today was a fluke. Otherwise, all the cakes I've tried have been just the right amount of sweetness for me. If you like overly sweet cakes this isn't the place. But the ingredients and fillings are super fresh. I also got a raspberry cheesecake and an almond bear claw. A place to go to when in Lakewood!

I absolutely love this family owned German scratch-bakery! There is quite a selection of imported goods and during the holiday time they update their Facebook when they received shipments of advent calendars, etc. The first time I came here I just got different goodies in the grocery area and they were all amazing. The next time I was dying to try their deli and wow it did not disappoint. All the employees are so friendly and patient. The pretzel roll sandwich I got from the deli was only $6 and it included: a pretzel roll, mustard, butter, cheese of my choice and meat of my choice. It was so amazing I wish I got 2. I look forward to returning and trying more of their food. Thank you for this gem!

OMG I have found a little piece of heaven. Growing up the sausages, mustards, breads, and pastries, ohh, I have so missed you until now.Veal sausages, spicy mustard, potato salad, pretzel, sourkrate, pickles, and Apple Strudle. Grilling put tonight.The staff were very helpful, glad to help and translate for me.Clean, orderly, organized, and willing to order something for you.Can anyone tell me the name of the sausages or bratwurst with Veal and Chicken???There is a bakery next door for a little getaway for coffee, tea, and desserts.

Whether you're hear for the tasty German treats or to brush up on your Deutsch, you're at the right place. Great stop for coffee and baked goods. We also stopped in the grocery next door to put together a nice lunch. We were new so ordering from the bakery was tricky. There are limited menus to look at and by the time you see the one on the wall, you've already passed the register. Also, wait to be seated, even after you've placed your order.

Im pretty sure the only reason this place has decent reviews is because there is no competition in the area. If people had a real place to go to, they wouldnt come here. A single, half full display of imported meats, not made in house and maybe 5 different breads? Weak. The bakery shop looked better but moved at such a snails pace that we walked out before ordering anything. Yeah, I see your hiring sign but these pastries are already made. Box em up and move on to the next person..... Quite a disappointing place.

Deli sandwich and pretzel bun amazing. I will be back for some sweets ! I definitely recommend

Great food. Especially the pretzels. The fresh cold cuts are amazing and fresh all the time.
