Hamitbach is an Israeli restaurant located on the outdoor patio of the Chabad of Downtown San Diego. If you come at the right time, then there are open parking spaces adjacent to the building that you can use while visiting. Because of their observance of the Jewish calendar, the place is closed on Saturday and only open for a few hours on Friday afternoon. Normal operating hours begin at noon from Sunday to Friday. The food was served cafeteria style. You pick the vehicle... pita, baguette, laffa (flatbread), or plate and then a protein... chicken shawarma, kifta (ground meatball) kabab, chicken pargiot (thigh), chicken schnitzel, or falafel. Except for the falafel, all the other proteins and whichever vehicle was selected cost $20+ each. That was rather pricey for a pita or baguette. Behind the service counter, you could see a spit on which the shawarma was cooking. There was also a flat-top grill to warm the other meats.I had never tried chicken thighs as an item at a Middle Eastern eatery. The pargiot was my choice as a plate. A generous selection of vegetarian sides (e.g. slaw) filled the round metallic dish along with hummus, tahini, and flatbread. The cubed chicken thighs were marinated with a seasoning containing onions, parsley, garlic, and spices. The flavor was mild while the meat was very juicy. Before I sat down at a picnic table, there was a station of complimentary side dishes adjacent to the service counter. Pickles, olives, fried eggplant, and what looked like an Israeli version of kimchi were available to supplement your order. The service was fine from the worker who assembled my plate. I came at an off-hour so only two other parties were seated while I was there. I can only imagine how busy Hamitbach can be after a service has concluded inside the Chabad.

Stumbled on this place in the Gaslamp Quarter during the lunch hour of a conference at the convention center. Very convenient location. There was a small line when I got to the location, but it moved fast, and it wasn't hard to find a spot at one of the picnic tables in the patio dining area. Hamitbach had a really unique atmosphere with Israeli music playing in the background and most people speaking Hebrew. I was told by one of the patrons that the restaurant is actually connected to a synagogue/community center and happened to see the Rabbi walk out to greet some customers during lunch. Despite sticking out a little bit, I felt extremely welcomed by both the staff and customers. For lunch I got a shawarma platter. The portions were enormous and included the shawarma itself in addition to various sides and salads as well as fluffy pita pieces. There was also additional self-service condiments such as spicy peppers and salads. The food was absolutely delicious; the vegetables were fresh and the various sides were extremely flavorful. This is one of those places where you can easily appreciate how high the quality of the ingredients and dishes are. I was also able to try their falafels which were crunchy and delicious. I really could not be more satisfied with the quality and quantity of the food for the price as well as the excellent service and atmosphere. I definitely would like to return as I heard (and saw) other customers talking about how great the kebabs were which actually sold out just as I was finishing my meal.
