Mad props to the two servers who were very kind and friendly despite belonging to a skeleton crew at the time.I'm a fan of Gyu-Kaku in general (#teamtorobeef) and the meat at this location is pretty decent (just a tad more gristly than at other Gyu-Kaku locations that I've been to but nothing terrible). If you haven't had Japanese BBQ, the meat is much less heavy on the marinade compared to its Korean counterpart (I actually prefer Japanese BBQ because of that). There are pre-set, a la carte, and AYCE options available here.I visited on a weekday afternoon and only half of the restaurant was functioning. Took about 20 minutes to get a table with no group in front of me and it was quite the waiting game between each ordering round of AYCE items (was beginning to get hungry again by the end of each round). Fortunately the 90-min AYCE time limit wasn't followed strictly. Hoping there's more help at the restaurant during dinner hours.

Very Meh. Food is aight I guess. You also get to cook the meat yourself at the table grill which is kinda cool. Though some of the items you get could be hit or miss; ranging from just ok to some completely flavorless filet, so don't get that!If you're looking for a quality Japanese experience, just go to Azuki.

We wanted to go to the Mira Mesa location but there was an 1 hour 15 min wait when we called. We looked online and the downtown location had no wait.We got seated after 8:30pm and got to take advantage of the happy hour prices (drinks and a la carte items). $4.5 for draft Kirin beer (12oz) is amazing. The cocktails were also really good.We decided to get the set combo for 4 people instead of AYCE, which ended up to be a good idea because it was a good amount of food and we were super full. Comparing the prices ($170 for combo) vs $58x4 people ($232) for AYCE, we still had up to $62 to order a la carte items and still end up cheaper than AYCE. Our combo also came with better cuts of meat that weren't included in the cheapest AYCE option. The meats were good, especially the beef. I also liked how the marinades weren't overpowering. The salad, garlic noodles, tuna crispy rice, and chicken karaage were also delicious. Especially the chicken! Our server was really nice and helpful, checked on us frequently and ensured we had a great experience.

One of my favorite places! The food is amazing! It's super flavorful, great size portions, fun atmosphere with the grills. The service is wonderful, they were very attentive.

Made reservations for Saturday lunch for SD restaurant week! It's a set menu; so you get rice, salad, miso soup for an appetizer. Then you can choose one of 3 sets for the main course. Then add on meat if you feel like you want to eat more. It's not like a typical AYCE, so you pay for what you get basically. It's worth it!Then we had zucchini for our veggies & there was s'mores for dessert. The servers and hosts were so nice! It's worth making reservations

We came here for dinner. We ordered three different combos and we all enjoyed the food and drinks. Plenty to share. They have a pretty good happy hour. I'll def come back.

During my visit to Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ on 5th Avenue, the concept of cooking your own meal at the table was engaging, yet it lacked the energetic flair typically found in cook-it-yourself BBQ spots. The ambiance, while cozy, didn't quite capture the lively, communal spirit that adds to the uniqueness of these dining experiences. The overall atmosphere and setup were pleasant but missed a bit of excitement.Service during our visit was somewhat slower than expected, with our appetizers arriving alongside our meats, disrupting the traditional flow of the dining experience. This minor hiccup in timing, combined with a slower-paced service, slightly affected the meal's overall smoothness and enjoyment, though the staff remained friendly and helpful throughout.Despite the fun of grilling fresh, flavorful meats and enjoying a variety of side dishes, it's worth noting that dining at Gyu-Kaku comes with a higher price tag compared to some other BBQ experiences. While the quality of food is commendable, the combination of slightly slower service, a less vibrant atmosphere, and higher costs makes Gyu-Kaku a good, albeit not exceptional, option for those seeking the unique cook-it-yourself BBQ experience.

The quality here was great and the service, excellent. We made a couple special requests and they were happy to accommodate. The meats are the centerpiece, of course, but don't miss out on options like grilled broccoli & cheese sauce or garlic noodles. Delish!

It was easier for us to get a table at the downtown versus Scripps Ranch location on a Friday at 6:30. I think the Downtown location is larger and can accommodate more people. We couldn't even get a seat within 2.5 hours of 6pm @Scripps. So we made the extra 15 minute drive.... Ended up owing in Horton plaza parking lot. I don't recommend that...it's a flat rate of $22 after a certain time. That was a lot for 2 hour parking! The waiter was so informative. He knew his stuff. He loved working here. We can tell he enjoys working here. We got the Valentine Letter B fixed menu. At first we thought it wasn't enough but while cow we were totally full! We were stuffed! It even came with dessert! Good price to get a good sampling of items on their menu. The Cocomo drink was delicious. We will be back!

I've been to my fair share of hibachi style restaurants but this one is a good one. Service was excellent. Everything was explained. I ended doing a restaurant week special for lunch. So I got the discounted prices. I saw what the normal prices are here. They aren't particularly cheap but even without restaurant week special I probably would have ended up here at some point. Anyway the meats were delicious. My favorite was the filet mignon. They also had a fantastic spinach lathered in garlic. Looks like they had a full bar here so I also grabbed a mule. As far as downtown eats this one is near the top if you don't mind spending a little money.
