We're back in Chicago....and back to the Greek Islands place. A great restaurant this place is!! Fried cheese dish is always the best we've had at Greek places. The fried eggplant was a great appetizer too. Now, I'm a big beef person, BUT, the chicken shish kabob was better than the beef! The fish dish was fabulous.

When in Chicago, I knew I had to try the Greek Islands. This is definitely one of the most famous Greek restaurants in the United States, and for good reason. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is nice, and so is the service. I tried a variety of their items: cold sampler with Taramosalata, Melitzanosalata, Tirokafteri, skordalia, create a combo with spanakopita and gyro, as well as all the sides that come with it.Everything on the sampler was delicious. The skordalia is a tad creamy and they are very generous with the garlic! It might be a tad much for those who don't like garlic. The taramosalata was quite good, too. It had a somewhat unnatural look to it, though. Very bright pink. The flavor itself was quite salty and savory, and I did enjoy it with some pita, but thr color did throw me off.The Tirokafteri was probably my favorite of the spreads. It wasn't really spicy, had a great creamy and salty feta base, and nice touch of freshness from the peppers. Definitely had a lot of cheese in one sitting thanks to this dip.My main meal was just as good as the appetizers we tried. The gyro was pretty perfect. Very generous portion, great savory flavor. The spanakopita was also near perfect. Great portion, perfect balance of feta to spinach, crispy on top. The tzatziki sauce they served it with was creamy and delicious. Lots of little cucumber chunks. And, the roast potatoes were a nice complimentary addition. We were seated quickly and were attended to by the servers in a great manner. Water was refilled regularly. We saw some other people ordered saganaki, and they light the fire right near you. Next time I come, I'd like to try that. The entrance itself is also very nice, with the seafood display, awards they've won, and so on.Overall, this is a very nice Greek place. I'd love to come back and try more of their delicious items and eat some more gyros. Definitely recommend.

Pros: quickly sat upon walking in with no reservation. Free valet in a part of town where parking is a pain. Food comes fast. Saganaki and spanakopita were fantastic. Cons: the entire experience was so rushed, service was not so friendly at both the bar and table service. Food was mediocre, old school classic Greek dishes - I feel they could put more love into the dishes. Overall: lively atmosphere, I would have given more stars had the entire experience not felt so rushed.

3.5! I was super excited about adding this to my Chicago itinerary but was honestly a little let down. Im not sure if we ordered the right things or not, but I personally wasn't wowed by any of the dishes we ordered. We got the flaming cheese, some combo plates with grilled pork, gyro, stuffed peppers, the cold sampler, and grilled white fish. I was really looking forward to the fish but it honestly wasn't flavorful or high quality tasting. There wasn't a wow factor, and the absence was consistent with all the other food. The dishes themselves tasted good but I wasn't impressed as all the other reviews raved about.

Food: generous in portions, they bring seafood from Greece price is very fair. Free bread but not the tastiest bread. Saganaki cheese is a show in itself. Since we went as a big group, I tried many dishes. However, I feel that its food lack a little bit in spices and flavors. Service: waiters are very nice, however they run out of a few items in the menu. One of them was even advertised as todays special. They take reservation by phone call. Ambience: lively, ideal for a big group dinner.

Food for the soul. Come hungry leave fulfilled from the inside out. Our party of 9 was sat in under 30 minutes and our server was fabulous. You must get saganaki (flaming cheese) and be sure to ask for extra lemon, it's way better with extra lemon. I ordered the Lamb Orzo special, which tasted exactly like my mother in law's... sauce consists of tomato and lamb fat with Greek Mezzithra cheese on top. Finished the meal with Greek Coffee (fortune included) and the best baklava I've had since being in the homeland.

One of those longtime Chicago institutions in the Greektown area, Greek islands is my go to for a Greek food experience. There's not much to add here that has been said already except I usually like to come and get a bunch of small plates as opposed to entrées. Today we ordered the saganaki, Greek salad, Small gyros, spinach pie and side of Greek potatoes for lunch. Always love the bread basket at the table, especially the sesame bread. Services always fast and friendly. Yes it can be a little touristy overall but it's always fun to bring guests here. Good celebration place as well. Close to many of the universities in the city. They have free valet parking. You can probably find street parking as well.

Thoroughly enjoyed this Greektown classic. Our party had keftedes, spanikopita, and Spartan chicken, all of which were enjoyable. We also shared a saginaki, because hey, we're basic. Would return. Also charming decor and nice service, plus free valet parking, a plus in the neighborhood.

The Greek salad was a mix of iceberg and romaine lettuce. I wish it had been mixed greens instead. The dressing seemed like something from a supermarket; I would have preferred a bottle of red wine vinegar alongside the olive oil on the table. Surprisingly, there was no red onion in the salad. I did get the classic spicy pepper but just two olives. This didn't resemble the Horiatiki I was expecting. While I've seen variations with and without bell peppers, this was not the "Greek Salad" I had in mind. The olive oil on the table had a light green color, medium body, and low acidity, with a very light, white peppery taste. It was likely from last year's harvest, not older than two years, and of good quality. The grilled calamari was a bit rubbery, possibly left on the grill too long. On the other hand, the grilled octopus (possibly Portuguese) was some of the best I've had. It was soft and tender without being chewy or overcooked, with grill marks that added a delightful char and flavor. The Horta, or dandelion , were overcooked and too watery for my taste. As for dessert, I wouldn't recommend the Galaktoboureko, but the rice pudding was better in my opinion.Service was decent, though I experienced better service on my second visit. Overall, it was a decent experience, and I will go back.

Living close by we always walk past it and finally went to try it. Honestly, surpassed my expectations. We got the vegetarian moussaka, side of lemon potatoes, and gyro app. I'm glad we did not get the full entire of gyro because it was plenty! The moussaka was delicious and I would definitely come back for that.
