This review is going to be a long one...It is sad for me to write but I owe it to the new(est) owner to provide details as J & R has been my family's butcher shop / meat company for over 40 years. My parents shopped there as did I when raising my kids who are adults now and previously were customers too. My kids informed me a few years ago that J & R quality had slipped and they refused to do business with them anymore. Unfortunately the business has changed hands a few times over the years and each time the problems have gotten worse. We kept going back in an effort to give the new owners a chance to "work out the kinks". However with Easter approaching we cannot put our faith in the hands of this company anymore and we must find a new supplier for Easter dinner 2023 - and every holiday going forward. We have ordered 2 -25# seasoned whole Turkey's and a prime rib roast from J & R every Thanksgiving and/or Christmas for the past 23 years. I always place my order 4 or 5 weeks ahead of time...In the past few years we have had issues like: showing up the day before Thanksgiving to pick up our turkey only to be told "We don't have any 25 lb turkeys, the best we can do is sell you 2 - 10 lb turkeys". Or the time the size was correct but upon opening one of the cooked Turkeys we realized it had not been seasoned as requested. The last straw for us was this past Christmas: My husband picked up the Turkey and as always it was wrapped in butcher paper. He put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold until midnight - when we planned to put it in the oven to slow cook for 12 hours...Every year prior to this, we have wrapped the entire turkey (butcher paper and all) in heavy duty aluminum foil and just popped it in the oven. It's basically like deep pit. This time we didn't buy foil so we had no choice but to put it in an oven bag - At midnight Christmas Eve, when my husband opened the butcher paper to place the seasoned whole turkey we ordered into the oven bag - we found instead a Turkey shrink wrapped in plastic - like you see in the freezer section at the grocery store, gizzards inside and all! Definitely NOT seasoned and not even completely thawed out. Mind you we paid $100 for this turkey - Needless to say we were not pleased. I waited to call the owner (Shelley Cumming who was actually the cashier who sold us the Turkey as her name is on the receipt) until the new year when I had cooled down a bit. Unfortunately each time I have called to inform her of this issue she has been "unavailable". I'm leaving this review to let her know the reason she most likely does not see many "regulars" doing business at J & R anymore. We used to order rib eye steaks and seasoned clod roasts throughout the year, and a prime rib roast every year at Christmas and New Year's. As they say "all good things must come to an end..."Sad that after years as a small, successful Mom & Pop meat company - all the recent growth and technological advances have been for nothing if the quality and efficiency is gone. To the original owners of J & R Meat Co. thanks for many great family memories!

I wish this was a real local meat market ..... it's not . It's basically a wholesale meat market catering towards restaurants and mini marts . The only thing you can get fresh is beef and very little selection in the case at that . Seafood , baby back ribs , etc are all frozen so you can't just pick up some ribs that day if you wanna grill or seafood .... gotta plan ahead to thaw them out . I mean even the markets it town have these items available same day ......And when you do ask for some beef that needs a butcher they only have one guy that knows what he's doing . The others don't .... I asked for filet mignon 1.5 inch thick and got home and they were half that thickness .... who eats a filet that's 3/4 of an inch ? ordered a tri tip with the fat cap cut off and got it with the cap still on ...... I would much rather go to quality meats in Visalia and be able to get fresh seafood , chicken , ribs ... anything I want whenever I want

Just stopped in to get some organ meats for my dogs food. Haven't been in here since I was a kid but I will definitely make this a regular from now on. Shop was very clean inside and out and everyone was very helpful. Prices were great and they are able to get or do just about anything for you for your orders. I will be coming here from now on I would much rather support this business than a large supermarket.

It's not often you find a diamond in the rough like JR Meat Company. From sausage to prime rib, and everything in between these guys are top notch I stopped buying all meat from the grocery store and buy exclusively from JR Meats. Butchers are always helpful with answers and suggestions the owners are community minded, and are the salt of the Earth. If you want a good experience from their table to yours, this is the only place to buy your meats. They will NEVER disappoint. Wish there were more stars to give.

If you like prime steaks this is a great place. Their prime cuts are wonderfully marbled and tasty. I especially like the ribeye steaks. The wagu cuts are also amazing. Worth the extra money you will pay for both. If your going to eat a steak it may as well be amazing. I haven't been impressed with their tri-tips. I have purchased several that had a lot of gristle. They replaced one for 50% off but I didn't bother to tell them when the second roast was the same. I just won't buy them again. Butcher counter staff are not all that friendly but the cashiers are always pleasant. They have a nice selection of deli type products and a limited supply of vegetables. A nice blend to make it aOne stop shop.
