This is a wonderful museum filled with treasures everywhere you look. Not only do you learn about the history of Wise County, there is a tremendous amount of our country's history. I loved seeing the uniforms, weapons, and medals from different wars, lady's dresses from times long ago, the medical instruments used by physicians during earlier days of medicine, children's toys and dolls... the list goes on and on. I also enjoyed looking at the architecture of the old school building, and imagining it filled with students years ago. This museum is a must see. You won't be disappointed.

I grew up in a neighboring town of Chico (the Limestone Capital) and my family and I used to frequent this museum. Once the home of Decatur Baptist College (and the nations first Junior College) it is now the Wise County Heritage Museum owned by the Wise County Historical Society, Inc. The Wise County Heritage Museum is located at 1602 South Trinity Street in Decatur Texas.Hours of Operation. Are 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday to SaturdayThe museum is alive with the activity of preserving Wise County's past. The museum is the headquarters for the Wise County Historical Commission and the Wise County Historical Society, Inc. Together they educate citizens about the past through presentations and through the museum exhibits and archives. The old college is packed with interesting artifacts from Wise County including an old telephone switchboard. And on the second floor you will find the Little Theater.....I have heard many tales about productions and events that have taken place on those boards.Be sure and take the time to stop by and see the rich history of Wise Country and then head up town and see the most beautiful court house in Texas and while you are there ask a citizen on the street to point you towards the old Waggoner Mansion or El Castille, (as it is sometimes called).....if you like the Classic movie GIANT with Hudson, Taylor and Dean then you need to take a peek at this secluded masterpiece. Rumor has it Rhetta was designed after El Castille. You know what why don't you just make a day of seeing the sights in and around Decatur? The Decatur Chamber of Commerce would be my suggestion for your next stop. Can you tell I grew up in Wise County? Go Explore the richness that IS Wise County....you will have a great time shopping and sampling the foods and hospitality of the area.

Small hometown museum with lots of history and local information. The ladies were welcoming. For $2.00 per person (be sure to have cash), there are three floors to explore. Each room had its own topic from textiles, furniture, military, and more. Hubby and I spent about two hours, but we also took our time to look at everything. Watch those little kids, as there are a lot of fragile pieces.
