I attended the opening season of the Lone Star Assassination City Roller derby at Thunderbird in Plano. You bring your own chairs and drinks and are seated right next to the action. The concession stand is open throughout the night. I was impressed with the professionalism of the sports league. There were four teams featured at the event. There was a good crowd in attendance. There was overflow parking available next to the rink. Being new to the sport, I appreciated the pamphlet given at registration which outlined the team information, rules and schedule. T-shirts were for sale and there were opportunities to meet your favorite athletes for an autograph.

We finally made it out to the Thunderbird Roller Rink for the championships. It's familiar to the televised derby from the 1970's except the rink isn't banked. The action is consistent with a few bone jarring crunches every match. These girls are serious about their sport. The assasination theme is everywhere, from the team names to the attendants in their pink pill-box hats. Thank you Dallas for embracing your history. Here's a few notables. - Get there early to avoid a long walk. Parking is scarce on majpr match days. - Take alcohol. This is a BYOB event, but you probably want to leave the glass at home. - Bring a chair. Unless you want to lean on the rail the whole time, you're going to be sitting on the rink in the chair you brought. - Another reason to get there early is for seat positioning. You do not want to be 10 rows back - you want to be where the action is, front row, baby.I'll be back.

Just a quick follow up... Assassination City now plays at the Fair Park Coliseum. You do have to pay for parking, and it's no longer BYOB, but the venue is much better and there's not a problem with being able to get a ticket since that place must hold several thousand people. The halftime bands sound better, too, because the acoustics are better. I've sat in both floor (VIP) seats and the general (stadium) seats, and they're both good. The way the coliseum is set up, there's not a bad seat in the house. It's also on the DART light rail line, but I always drive and just pay the $10 to park. I guess you could park by one of the restaurants or bars by Exposition Park and walk over but I don't.Check their website for bout details and tickets. It's usually cheaper to get them ahead of time, which is what I do.

Roller derby was a blast and definitely something different to see in the area. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. Cold beer and snacks are readily available throughout the venue. It can get a pricey with admission and bar priced drinks here. They have two ticket options which are floor seats and its not reserved pretty much first come first serve. The lower level have a great eye level view of the match and can fill up early. They normally have three matches to watch so the value is there unless you drink a ton. I had never been to roller derby before and this is a flat track so not as exciting as many other venues. The AC Derby does a great job of interacting with the crowd and the program was very thorough in explaining all the rules of the game. They had great photos of all the teams throughout the program. They have great commentators who live tweet the matches. Their is also a band that plays at various points of the match and during the halftime of each match. I think this would be great fun for a group of people just wanting to see something out of the norm in Dallas. The ladies are tough and ready to kick some ass when needed. They also party at Lee Harvey's in case you want to hang out with them or just buy them a drink or three.

I went to my first Assassination City Roller Derby bout this spring at Fair Park near downtown. The bouts are held at the Coliseum on the fairgrounds. You pay for parking, but it appears to be guarded as well as plentiful. Get your ID checked at the front and get the "Yes I want beer" stamp on your hand. There's *lots* of kids that come to the bouts, so don't worry about getting that sitter and bring 'em along (kids 10 and under get in free)! Two levels of seating provide an excellent view of all the flat track Roller Derby action! Personally, I prefer to be up a little higher, it makes it easier to see everything. The venue is clean and air conditioned - a major bonus in the Texas spring and summer. If you've never been to Roller Derby, don't worry; the announcers do a great job of explaining things at the beginning of each bout. They also do a terrific job of making sure you know what's going on throughout the match. There's plenty of food and beverage to choose from; ooey-gooey nachos, giant soft pretzels, hot dogs, hamburgers, coke products, candy, and ice-cold beer. Let's not forget about all the lovely eye-candy which is prolific at these events! The theme for ACRD is centered around the historic JFK assassination, with team names like "The Deadly Kennedys", "Bombshell Brigade", "Viva La Revolucion", and "Lone Star Assassins". Become an official fan, and you can join "The Warrin' Commission"!ACRD has it all: great prices, great athletes, kid friendly, food & beverages, and competition. Come on out, pick a team and cheer your head off!

I had a really great time. It was a double header. You can count on roughly four hours of play and good times. It's usually BYOB and BYOC (Chair) as stating rinks usually don't have liquor licenses, or extensive seating. The point is, after all is said and done, for roller rinks to be family friendly activity centers, yes no?! Prices on food decrease as the night continues! =p Plan accordingly. Food is simple. Cheese burgers are microwave. Pizzas are delivered and resold. Hot dogs are warmed on premises, just as the drinks are carbonated. If you're a foodie, allow me to discourage you. If you are a cool foodie, the come on down. The girls? The girls are amazing. I saw Tiny Taz from Oklahoma play with what I think was clearly a broken rib. She crossed the line from girl, into girl jock in a serious way. Hell, I pop a rib and I'm out, much less go through what she did. Go girl. Your rock my lame ass. The girls are amazing. Let's leave it at that. It's not far from downtown. It's not far from Northeast Dallas. It *is* in Mesquite. Get over it. It's a good time. Head down 30 and get there fairly quickly. *Please* get out of the suburbs. Parking across the street is easy and is only $2.00. Lots of fun!

Roller Derby is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and the Assassination City Roller Derby league makes it really fun to watch! The league plays a "home" game every month, March through September, with four home teams battling it out to be league champions. Their travel teams play against other leagues nation-wide, both at home and away, throughout the year. The games are family friendly; I've seen kids entranced by the skating action for the whole time, just as I've seen grandmothers entranced by the games too! The atmosphere is really friendly, but also really exciting as well - the teams are playing just a few feet from your seat! It's bring your own beer and bring your own seat at Dad's Skateland in mesquite. Foodwise, there are nachos and pizzas and hotdogs (oh my!) available.I enjoyed watching Assassination City play throughout 2010 and recommend everyone to come see the girls skate their way to glory! Even if you don't normally care for watching sports, try this once and I'm sure you'll become a fan!
